Well, it's clear you never has been in my position. Every player has suggestions and its own view of how should be played the game. Sometimes you have to isolate from those opinions and do what you think is right according with the gameplay idea you have. The example you cite is actually a level design issue, nothing to do with the jump. It'll be fixed as soon as possible. That spawn was made with the old "super-jump" in mind, clearly an error. However it's still passable if you crouch and jump, not so complicated. And are there "many more" issues like that? I only know that one.

i have been in similar positions to what you are in now, thank you very much. it is clear to me that you dont know how to handle those situations, however. now if you'd actually listen you've just had 3 people stating the same thing, 2 of whom came up with different examples. i'm not trying to be an ass about this, but if you dont listen, you'll lose alot of players/community. an old saying goes, "win the discussion or learn something from it" -- i think you ought to heed that. either way, arrogance will get you nowhere.

Can I ask you why do you need to jump 3 times in 5 seconds? I suppose it'd be occasional, however there is no a big need IMO.

I understand it can be annoying sometimes, but I find even more annoying those people jumping like frogs.

for example, in (i think) el paso, desperados have a balcony they can jump out of. however, with the current build, itll take me at least 10 seconds to get over the railing due to poor level design and/or because of the jump limit. this is just an example, i remember many more similar cases.

also, i feel you're not listening enough to your players (given your VERY critical views) and i think you need to change that attitude as well. it's a beta, try it out. if anything bad happens, you can always change it back. don't say no just because that's your personal opinion, because your choices affect other people.

the jumping part in the new version is really bad -- you can only make one jump before waiting about 5 or more seconds to regen to jump again. it's too much of a wait. my suggestion is to decrease jump stamina to what it was before, AND increase the stamina bar a bit so you can jump at least 3 times before running out (without spurs). this really keeps me from playing the mod :\

    disregarding killertomato's post:

    1.

i have been around too long to remember any good sites, but you would want to find some place with alot of tutorials for starters, and that would be either snarkpit.com or interlopers.net, for the source engine. for any other engine, i havent really checked into sites, though i reckon there will be a few within a google search.

    2.

there will be absolutely no hard code programming involved in level design. what you will encounter, however, is scripting of one sort or another. scripting will take place between different entities and will generally be substitute coding. still, don't fret as most of it is simply logic, and you will learn it as you go.

    3.

professional level designers tend to use whatever program specified for them, under unreal licensing it would be unrealEd, under source licensing it would be hammer etc. as long as you have a game, you will most likely have an editor; though some of them will probably be less known and thus have smaller or fewer communities.

    4.

if you are aiming for learning an editor for professional use, i would suggest you familiarize yourself with the unreal editor. there is a good amount of games out there using unreal engines of different kinds, and it is quite versatile and easy to learn. you will however have to find communities on your own -- see point 1. if you're just in it for a laugh and want to try it casually, i suggest the source engine/hammer. it's easy to learn above all, and even though it lacks features that unrealEd has, chances are you will have a better time familiarizing yourself with it. there are also other alternatives to editors, like the cryengine's editor (that crysis was made with) among others; however your best bet is probably sticking with one of the aforementioned in terms of communities and easy of learning.

    that is all.

valve, with sony santa monica coming close second; although the designer behind god of war has moved onto his own company called eat sleep play. it shall be interesting if those games come anywhere close to the standard of god of war.

    JUST KIDDING

it looks pretty good for the hl1 engine, but as people have said before, start on a new engine instead. i bet your map would be easily transferred to source if you let it.

i agree with the fact that i get more presents from myself these days and that i have no use for christmas presents. in our family, we've always known exactly what we got in presents and nowadays it seems like i am on the giving end of the whole christmas thing; which is actually just as enjoyable as recieving gifts, believe it or not. it's like repaying years of kindness to everyone involved.

i think second and third party games for the wii will be a major problem. so far, all the wii actually has is about 10 different mario titles, while not releasing anything new and unique. this might, in fact, be the biggest of the wii's problems.

of course nintendo doesnt care, as milking the franchise will leave them funds enough still: when buying a console, the people that buy the wii dont usually buy any other games with it, leaving themselves to wii sports. after a few months or even a year later they buy maybe a few other games, get positively surprised and so keep on playing; despite only in reality having maximum 5 games at their disposal. this means nintendo aren't really pushed to making new titles other than new editions of the very traditional, and might i say, sell out franchises.

while this doesnt hurt the casual gamer much, since they follow the cycle mentioned above, it does leave out the wii as a hardcore game machine. but then again, maybe this was what nintendo was aiming for -- i bet there's a pretty big market for this these days, especially considering that microsoft wen with having the 360 remade so that one could get it cheaper and get arcade games for it. i think nintendo is pleased with what the wii does for them for now; and while they have cemented its legacy for the casual gamer, it does bode ill for the people wanting a bit more than an arcade machine with the occasional SMG-esque game.

updating topic with hostel info for those coming from afar. since hotels are much more expensive i put them out of consideration; however if you have a specific wish to stay at a hotel, feel free to look some up yourself (i am not acquainted with any cheap hotels near downtown).

    http://www.danhostel.dk/vandrerhjem.asp?lan=uk&id=144

    http://www.danhostel.dk/vandrerhjem.asp?lan=uk&id=92

in both cases you can stay a few people in one room and split the price. also, it's low season which means cheaper stays. my recommendation would probably be the first one since it's closer to both downtown and to our rendez-vous point.
