    Hi KungFuSquirrel,

yep, had the idea of making that "skyline" in my january vacations to Salzburg in Austria (took pictures from an elevated position to catch the church towers, domes etc.).

The visibility... well yeah, you can see a lot of it from the player's POV, but like in a real city it depends on where you are .

In a few places you won't see much of the skyline due to buildings on your left and right, but I made most streets end with mid-height buildings to open the view a bit. The main purpose was to keep the illusion of a big city feeling alive for players using the secondary routes across the railway tracks (middle picture) or through the upper storeys of the buildings.

    Edit:

I've been spending some more time on this project (I've posted a set of pictures back in august)... though it still is WIP, I think the result is looking OK so far.

Yet many aspects still need a lot of attention...

Beautiful stuff there. Can't wait for Push to become released .

    Something Non-DoDish from my side...

A house that awaits restoration. It wasn't clear what colours to use on the walls, railings and building itself, so I went for a "preview" in Source to help us decide.

Actually the results turned out to get pretty close to the "real thing".

It's nothing big, but I think it's quite nice to look at.

Only had three days to get it done so far, BUT (!) to my defense: I just didn't have more time, since work on it is about to begin. Apart from that, I slowed down my mapping speed by factor two (though this is a tough challenge really ).

Oh it's not designed for trains, if that's what's puzzling all of you .

It's nothing but a mineral/coal transport system. There won't be any trains driving into the hall .

The hangar is only home to a small maintainance vehicle or a motorised transport locomotive that pulls those carts...

... towards the coaling station ("Großbekohlungsanlage")...

... on the other side of the map.

    I guess I didn't mention this, did I? ;/

I've seen this in Almeria, Spain...

    http://www.jarquil.com/fotos-sociales/c ... _popup.jpg

it's leading through large parts of the city like an elevated railway. And like that, it'll lead through my map from the axis spawn almost towards the allied spawn, shaped like a snake.

There'll be stairs to access it in selected areas, so in the end it'll be just an elevated alternative route, a bit more original than another boring cellar/subway/basement system, or not?

    ACK!!! I'm trying!

The problem is... as soon as I get into it, I keep going for hours and hours, and I always fear I might loose an idea if I don't transport it into the map right away. I'll try to slow down though and focus on polishing every square inch, starting with the foot ramp .

    Sentura:

I think we can come to a compromise - I'll get my camera out tomorrow and take a number of pictures. You take a look at & think about them and the possibility that my layout might, after all, be plausible, and maybe we can come together there .

Hehe, in fact I called all the work versions Nachtigall.

The problem is... to reach international players, you need international map names .

Anyway, the second beta will be done in one week from now - with full HDR support, that is .

Cheers & thanks for the feedback!

    Hi again Sentura,

trust me , I've spent many months on the road just to get references of buildings from about 1870 to 1930. I'm certain there have been plenty of places that featured this kind of architecture a long time before the 1920s.

One example would be the city of Lübeck:

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... peicher_(Lübeck).jpg/800px-Speicher_(Lübeck).jpg

    http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image ... ridges.jpg

    Königsberg, Hamburg:

    http://www.bildarchiv-hamburg.de/hambur ... index1.htm

    http://www.dialo.de/images/cityGuides/h ... .large.jpg

Even more modern: the Kaufhaus Schocken in Chemnitz (1928)

    [Blocked Image: http://www.chemnitzer74.de/chemnitz/images/schocken2.jpg]

    [Blocked Image: http://www.chemnitzer74.de/chemnitz/images/schocken.jpg]

Compared to this, my setting should be almost conservative...

    [Blocked Image: http://www.albatros44.de/soviets/sov7k.jpg]

P.S.: Hi Hessi , I'll try and do that. Just been kind of hard to get the suspended-railway-idea into a screenshot from a player's POV.

Good idea on the window frames.

It's very WIP, actually all you see on those shots has been made yesterday.

On the futuristic aspect - well, people were far more advanced in the outgoing 19th century than you might expect.

So yeah, I think this should come quite close to a 1920's scenario .

Looks definately interesting robert, nice night-style athmo.

I wonder how you'll manage to keep the performance up - at least if the dimensions of the map are rather large, the engine will have to cope with lots of detail/static props, won't it?

I'd really like to check that one out .

    Hey there,

thanks for your last comments, useful stuff!

Heh Spine, thanks for being able to use your textures - really excellent material to work with. Seriously!

The Turret issue has been solved kind of .

Okay um... I don't know if this already fits into the "Finished Work" section? Anyways, I have a first beta version of Nightingale ready for testing & joy. ^^

There's still a lot of work to do, but in order to change most of the still-to-do-stuff I'll need much input from players & playtesters. But yeah, that's what a beta is there for, right?

Note to all HDR-users: the HDR function has been demolished in DoD:S for me, so I couldn't build the cubemaps correctly in HDR mode. They'll only be available in LDR, so please make sure to run the "buildcubemap" command if you play it in HDR mode.

    EDIT:

Might be best to run the map without HDR, since you'll probably get a version conflict in multiplayer games if you have the cubemaps built on your own. Beta 2 will have full HDR support though - maybe better wait for that one, then .

    Hi again,

I think I know pretty much what things are supposed to look like - might even go as far as to say I should know best considering the abnormal amount of hours I've spent in archives collecting reference material for that one.

Concerning that one texture though, you're right. I'm going to work on the textures and edges, hopefully going for a result that will leave your macbook in a nicer condition .

Thanks for the links, I guess I've seen those somewhere else... maybe DoD Forums, but I'm not all certain.

Comments & suggestions would be fine as usual .

    Quote from FrieChamp

This is what the WIP Level Gallery section of the forum is really about though - posting "Work in progress" shots of your level. It isn't meant to be a work showcase, that is what "finished work" is for

Since you are posting in this thread (which is in the WIP level gallery section) you and the others aren't doing anything wrong per sé, but this thread was meant to be for stuff that offers only very little to show or is very early in development. By posting all your stuff in here the rest of the forum falls short, work falls through the cracks and you will probably not receive as much feedback as when posting an own thread.

In the end it's still up to you though when you think you got enough material to show in an independent thread. I'm just trying to motivate people to open more own threads around here, don't be shy guys

    Convinced me, I'll risk it.

    Cheers again.

Wouldn't be half as good without those textures of yours .

    FrieChamp:

Aye, true that. My project is way too early for that, though.. it's always kind of odd when the final result on page xx of the thread doesn't bear any similarity with the opening post .

Now that the basic lighting and style is adequate, I'll just work on it until I've got enough material for an own thread.

    Cheers!

    Hi again...

Well, I found that this nighttime lighting definately creates a wonderful fuzzy athmosphere for christmas shopping or having a sausage, but fits extremely bad into a ww2-scenario (last but not least due to the functioning street lights - chances for electricity working on full scale in such a desolated city should be close to zero).

Consequently I created a new ambience...
