Damn right ! Level Design in a day conference has a new installment this year. Can't wait.

I hope you'll make some GDC Notes like year before. It was very helpful!

  • So these days what is a level designers responsibility?

    • mjens
    • January 22, 2011 at 11:22 AM

It tepends what company you work for. When I was starting to work as a Level Designer I had to design whole level with placeholder meshes or boxes and script all the actions. Now I'm an Environment Artist, I'm doing same stuff except scripting and I have to prepare meshes (placeholders or prototypes (no texture, final geometry)), plan whole level on paper, set all the visuals, FX, sounds etc. That's the typical Env. Artist's job. When you'll show that you can make 3D models, textures and you're doing it good, in some companies you'll be asked to make also that stuff. Big companies will hire more people, smaller will try to get things done with available people.

Looks nice. It's based on grid and modular parts that are randomized or it's more advanced?

So I started making a ctf map inspired by that Quake 3 arena space one. Then I realised whats the point, theres no bonus points for making a CTF map and theres no points for how well it plays. So a DM map that looks nice is the obvious route.

Making map that doesn't look gay is the obvious route. Joke

OK, so now my turn. It's nothing "wow" but I want to share it with you guys. Few weeks ago I discovered that place. The red window frames is a part of the culture here, also the language is a bit different, it can be called slang somehow... This region and few cities around where German before the war, also the mines that are nearby. This slang is a mix of Polish and German, crazy sometimes

The fence should actually be fine because the alpha being used is from the bake, so the padding added to the thickness of the wiring. Once I blockout the textures for it, I'm going to create a proper alpha.

Cool, make sure that the post and that "pipe frame" (don't know exact name) won't be too massive after finishing the wire texture

Yes, only visualization but QUICK. I need some ultra fast rendering method of alpha maps in 3DSMax or maybe tree with leafs out of polys

These wires from ferroconcrete are way to thick.

Also the wire fence is thick, some of the proportions are very cartoon-ish.

I think for this contest, we'll probably have to say it's probably a no-go. What did you have in mind?

I could use 20 base boxes as brushes (terrain, walls) but much more decoration objects but that brushes are objects too, that's nonsense. I'd use CryEngine or Chrome Engine but again... how to count brushes where there's no such stuff
