I know what you mean, but I'm one of those gameplay > graphics people and I'm an artist. I like to get involved more in the design side of things where possible, I wish I could do a bit more of it to be honest.

An example is Gangbeasts which we've been playing at work. Fantastic gameplay, but the art assets are still really basic. Yet I'd much rather play that than anything else!

But, obviously, a nice art style definitely doesn't hurt

I'm all about the graphics. I'd rather have something play at 10 fps than look like complete shit. I'm very shallow like that. In fact I think that anything above 10 fps is just being greedy.

It'd be a terrible game made of Source brushwork with Hurg on every face.

Hey man!

To be honest, I think it's that side of things that I'm not really looking after. I eat healthily, but in terms of exercise, I get barely any these days. I need to motivate myself to start exercising, it always makes you feel good. Also, I don't think I'm sleeping well enough either! I'm going to work on those aspects first I think, and start taking better care of my self.

Also, I gotta say, that Sony is actually a great place to work. The pay is really good, holiday is great, we get half days on Friday in summer, no overtime, and a great bunch of guys. The only downside is the slow progress of the project but you get that everywhere really. And I guess that's the nature of new tech!

You've opened my eyes a bit more man, I'm gonna work on that other stuff.

Hey all, thanks for the great responses! Really interesting to see how everybody is getting on, and thanks for the suggestions as to what I can do.

I think the issue with me at the moment is that we haven't really started a project so I've just been kinda sat in limbo for the past 3 months, not really doing much. I'm sure things will pick up eventually, but sometimes it's just a little tricky to see the light through the trees you know? I probably made it out to be worse than it is; the people I work with are great, and the tools are amazing, it's just the lack of a project that is leaving me feeling a little unfulfilled at the moment! I can't really say much more than that.

@Frie - That's the thing, I know I'll only ever work in the games industry, I'm not qualified to do anything else! Plus when I'm working on something I love, I feel so passionate about it. I'm a little burnt out but not enough to make me want to leave.

dux - Hehe, I loved working on NS2, but for me it was all about finding a balance. When I started work on NS2, I really didn't have a good balance of work/life. I spent pretty much every waking hour working on NS2, because I loved it so much.. Then I moved in with my girlfriend here in London, and I realised that we weren't spending any time together, and I wasn't spending as much time with friends as I was before, working was all I did. It just got a little too much in the end, I felt like where I was at in life at that point and at that point in my career, I needed to work with other people. A, because I still felt like I had a lot to learn, and B, I needed the social interaction

I think one day I will go back to freelancing, but not just yet.

Sprony - Cheers for the great post man, you're such a nice guy. I am actually already working on a side project which I feel really passionate about. It's never gonna turn into a fully-fledged game, I'm just learning Unreal, but I'm really enjoying it at the moment!

By that, I don't mean to say that the game is bad or good, I'm just saying the magic has been taken away for me because I know how it all works! I would love to be able to get caught up in the hype for this game! I am still looking forward to playing it on release though

Yep I remember seeing this whilst it was in production when I was at CA, and I just remember thinking 'whats the point?'. I'm pretty sure it doesn't use many assets from the game, so it's just kinda... Pointless.

Sounds like a bit of a dramatic title for a thread, but I'm genuinely curious as to how people feel about working in the games industry. Do you enjoy your current job? Explain what your job title is, and what you actually do on a daily basis... Be as vague as you like if you're scared of upsetting the boss men

I'm just curious, because I kinda feel a bit burnt out at the moment, like I'm not really enjoying my job, and I've felt it at the past 2 places I've worked. Making games has always been a huge passion of mine, but just recently I feel as if I've lost that passion during the hours of 9-5... When I get home I suddenly feel quite inspired to work on my own stuff. Therefore I end up staying up pretty late because I kinda wanna put off the inevitable.

I remember that I used to feel so lucky to be working in this industry, I could make art all day and remember thinking that I should consider myself lucky because I could be stacking shelves at Tesco or whatever.. But these days I have actually been considering what I would do if I wasn't in the games industry.

Please post up your own thoughts about your job, I'm really interested to see what people think!

Yeah The Walking Dead doesn't really tend to focus on the zombies too much, it's more about the interactions with other survivors. Wonder how that's gonna translate into gameplay.. Probably not at all

Hehe, maybe something like that'll be incorporated into the story. I was bored at work today and started thinking up idea and story behind the scene, and will be working to incorporate elements of this into the environment. Here goes!

Orbiting Planetary Engineering Facility Summary: An orbiting space station above a planet in the beginning stages of being terraformed. The space station is a base for the research scientists and engineers involved in the terraforming. They primarily live on this station, but also go on excursions down to the planet for weeks at a time in order to seed the planet with algae and other microbes, with the end goal of making the planet hospitable in generations to come. The station generates it's own gravity via its spinning superconductors below the station, and has the technology to create food (as well as having large stores from Earth), and also generates and recycles it's own breathable air. A large group of scientists and engineers left Earth 40 years previously, aboard a giant interstellar space station, in order to travel to the nearest star system to ours and start up a human colony in a different star system. However, Earth received a distress signal 5 years into the terraforming process. A single garbled message was received, and no other contact has been made since. Fortunately, since the departure of the original crew, technology has been developed that has reduced the large amount of time required to travel across space, but the time required is still fairly substantial. You are one of the crew members sent to investigate the cause of the distress signal. After waking up from 10 years in stasis, you are approaching the station, eager to find out what caused the distress signal. Purpose: - Primarily to learn Unreal 4 rendering techniques. - Learn basic Unreal blueprints (opening doors, turning on light switches etc) - Show a scene from beginning to end, showing all stages of production. - Release online for other people to learn from. - Investigate environmental storytelling. Inspiration:Alien, Bioshock, Ringworld, Halo. And here's another shot of a kitchen area in the bunk room. Not quite sure what I think of the white cupboard doors/drawers. Might change that to the same wood, but don't know if it'll blend in too much! Might try putting in some metal frames. This looks pretty cool. People were going mad over this at work today, I think most people didn't even realise it was a Silent Hill teaser.
