I strongly disagree, I have years of 3d modelling experience and if you are blocking out and prototyping a level there is a high amount of iteration and testing and bsp is the most durable, fast and efficient method of doing this. Going back and forth between two programs and reimporting etc is not good workflow.

I've had plenty of experience with U3 and source to make a good comparison. Unreal's BSP is a hard beast to tame and lighting bsp surfaces in is hideous - no smoothing or curved surfaces, big ugly Lightmaps seams everywhere where the BSP unncessarily cuts up faces and the texture/alignment tools are terrible, and of course rebuilding to see your changes is not efficient. Like i said it wins in every other aspect as far as im concerned but Epic have really neglected the BSP side of things, I mean they even removed some BSP features that were from the 2004 engine.

8v8? What console BS. Well there goes my dream of an ET remake Best servers were always the large ones, at least for me, 32 was perfect in my opinion and 64 was also really fun - really felt like a warzone at times, so much action going on around you

I agree in that there seems to be a lack of consistancy in the visuals/design, but on a side note - are those ET MP map remakes? If they remake ET Im sold used to love the crazy 32 player matches!

When it comes to BSP Source owns Unreal big time - for everything else Unreal is a winner

Looks amazing! My only advice would be dont use the horrid DOF. The fog should do a sufficient job of seperating the foreground from the back and also making it brighter just takes away from the original atmosphere. increase the brightness of the fog instead and use some bright spotlights as mentioned before

Im having problems figuring out how to end a game in SP so that at the end of a level I can trigger something which sends the player back to the menu screen. I found an game_end ent but it doesnt work in SP. Anyone had any experience with this?

  • Good batch image conversion software?

    Hey guys,

I've decided to clean up hundreds of texture source files lying around in my collection into one unified format (TGA) but I cant seem to find any decent, simple software to do this. I have a bunch of PNG, DDS, TIFFs and BMPs I just want to batch convert quickly and easily but so far havent had much luck.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

    Cheers!

If you cant see meshes in a viewport you probably turned them off by pressing W which toggles meshes on/off

what do you mean by a 'proper' laptop? I dont want some chunky power-mad portable furnace sat on my lap if that's what you mean, all I need is some thing modestly powered and capable of browsing the web, doing a little Photoshop and maybe running hammer and hl2 at modest speeds without running out of juice after 30mins ...

I've been seaching for a while now for a laptop that has decent battery life (4+ hours at least) fairly compact (13-15inch screen) and some kind of graphics acceleration - doesnt have to be super fast, just anything other than a crappy intel chipset.

So far everything i've seen is either lacking in battery life or contains a nasty intel GPU. Only thing i've seen which looks kinda good is the new Macbook air, but that is a little too expensive for my tastes.

    Anyone here got any sugestions?

Hmm let's see, lately for me it's been egg and bacon; egg sausage and bacon; egg and spam; egg bacon and spam; egg bacon sausage and spam; spam bacon sausage and spam; spam egg spam spam bacon and spam; spam sausage spam spam bacon spam tomato and spam; spam spam spam egg and spam; spam spam spam spam spam spam baked beans spam spam spam...

...or Lobster Thermidor a Crevette with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam.

The karts never randomly start rotating, they do bounce around on landing (monday I will try ratcheting the kart body restitution down) - the kart physics setup is something I am endlessly wrestling with. We are using bullets built in vehicle model which has a lot of suspension values to tweak, all of which dramatically change the way the kart behaves. It is easy to get it set up to perform well in some situations, but there always seems to another situation you just broke while tuning it for another. It is a long and slow and painful process.

    Also, definitely not my benz

It does appear un-natural though when you make a jump and it goes all lob-sided, Is it really necessary to have proper physics and suspension values? If you look at the most successfull games from this genre i.e. Mario Kart - their physics system are extremely simple, if non existant - kart always stays upright + basic gravity for jumps +basic settings for torque, accelleration, speed etc. Atm I think the biggest problem I see is that the karts dont feel 'grounded' so to speak, they seem a bit floaty and odd. Dont get me wrong though it still looks awesome but I think it's one area that needs a bit of polish.
