Dearest Game Artist,It is with great excitement that we announce our upcoming game art competition. We've worked hard behind the scenes to get everything ready and in place.

The competition will go live on Monday, February 16th and we're hoping it's going to be the first of a bunch of more-regular, bigger competitions with solid specifications, interesting themes and a fistful of fantastic prizes for you to duke it out over.

We usually keep out competition specs hidden in a buried vault until launch, but we'll sneak a couple of hints your way, to get your game-art brains going:

    • [*:3rioow3u]This competition will be environment-based
[*:3rioow3u]You'll be allowed to form teams of up to 3 artists
[*:3rioow3u]Our biggest collection of prizes so far

Please keep an eye on your inboxes for newsletters and other announcements the closer we get to our launch day.

See you all again on February 16th!

good luck with finding a job. seems like the bigger companies lay off quite a lot of employees (EA, THQ, ...). they probably want to get a job too.

most of the people being laid off are mostly HR, QA, etc. They only lay off designers, artists and coders when It's really needed. At least, this is what I think It's been happening.

    Nice, very nice.

Pretty varied portfolio you got there, I liked it.

Website is very slow tho, making the navigation a bit boring.

ah ah, maybe! The photo doesn't help either, shitty iPhone cam.

Chris is like, one of the funniest guys I've ever met! Specially when he's wearing the "VIVA PORTUGAL" hat, ah ah!

The restaurant is called Schoneberger.. or something! Here's what I had, strange shaped pizza, but it was really delicious. I also tried some of Chris's nachos!

  • What "Level Designer" means in our industry

    • -HP-
    • January 29, 2009 at 3:50 PM

it's like mentioned above, Level Design can mean different things from company to company.

6/7 years ago, a level designer could do everything from sketching the level on paper, making the BSP, paint the textures, model props and level geometry, illuminate and script AI / Object animations / Cinematics.

Nowadays, games are so complex that it's almost impossible to do all this stuff for only one guy, that's why most of the time you have certain different categories of level designers, like:

level designer, level scripter, level artist / environment artist.

Personaly speaking, I prefer the Level Art side of level design, illuminate environments, model props and paint textures, make environments good looking, etc! The longer I stay sway from scripting, the better!

    Really, really nice!

I like monochromatic enviroments and you really picked a good color for the overall scene.

Looks very well polished, smooth! those brushes are really well made!

The only thing that might look a little odd to me are those "light shafts" on this screenshot, maybe you could have added a bit of fog instead.

Other that that, congratulations on getting this finished! Looks really fun for a MP game.

    Hey there and welcome.

well, it's like you said there's really not much to critic on.

Plus, the screenshot it self is very dark and I'm not really sure what exactly am I looking at. Maybe if you could explain what are you trying to create and / or post screens with better angles and illumination!

    cheers
