Yes, you need a TV with a SCART entrance. Afaik, no computer monitor has that entrance.
Recent monitors have HDMI with HDCP though, which you can use to play PS3 and Xbox360.

A good portfolio gets you inside the door, but it wont give you a regular or a senior position if you don't have production experience (worked on games before).
