Second time in 2.5 years I had to talk a friend down from 100% legit wanting to kill themselves. Life is fucking depressing

No it's not, life is beautiful if you let it.

Srsly tho, can't wait for the dept collector to come pay a visit, pause the game, build a fence around him, and see him die of starvation.

Then have his ghost haunt me and my chick while we play under the sheets.

Do you guys ever get any "moral" questioning* about working on games? I mean thinking that games are intrinsically addicting and for lot of kids is the only activity they do apart school.

I know this is a problem is family related, but I think the question still stands.

*i mean if you yourselves feel guilty at some degree. Mine it's not a question on education, I'm just thinking that lot of kids after school they just play instead of doing sports, petting animals, etc.

What? Absolutely not, I never even looked at it that way before! Sure, games can be addictive, but only people with addictive personalities will get hooked by games, if it weren't games it would be something else.

cashed brought up "educational" games as a counter argument to that and while, sure, there's a few, no one really got hooked on "Learning English with a platformer game 101".

Games offer immersive experiences and worlds, no other media can offer that, that's why I'm making games, to offer people the same pleasure I have when i play a really immersive (or even fun) game.

People that say that games are dangerous and addictive are as ignorant as they come, kids back in the 80's were hooked on movies, in the 70's we're hooked on comics, kids back in the 60 were hooked on dodge ball (and LSD), and so on and so forth.

    So... no.

If you find your job is not fulfilling enough you can try to pursue other interests in your free time, preferably things that have nothing to do with gaming and that you are passionate about. We have to remember that our media is very multidisciplinary by nature and you can't level up as an artist or designer if your only source of information/art is art station and polycount. You need to read books, you need to watch weird shit, you need to go out and observe the world around you.

A while ago my skill level was reaching a plateau and I had no idea why. I would go home, start big projects and never go anywhere because making big projects, well, require huge amounts of energy. Then I'd get demotivated because I wasn't leveling up nor finishing anything, that feeling kept feeding on itself and at some point I just quit trying to make any environment art at home. At that time, I moved teams to a completely different project and art pipeline. It was pretty challenging but it forced me to go back into "research" mode at home which paid off insanely well. During that time I learned Zbrush properly, PBR, UE4, started drawing again, read a lot about arts, science, history etc.. I also reflected on what's my main motivation to be here and came to the conclusion that it wasn't GAMES themselves but creating immersive worlds. That's my real passion and what I always wanted to do. Games are currently the most accessible media for that since you can build stuff quickly and walk around your creations, but to me games are not the "end game" for my career but rather a means to an end.

I'm extremely lucky to have the chance to work in a company that enables me to grow constantly so it's easier for me to "level up" during the day than it would be if I was making crappy IOS games or whatever. However, if that's not the case for you, you have to start challenging yourself since you are the only one responsible for your life. It's easy to get into grumpy mode and start blaming the company, the boss or the game for doing half-assed work, but you should really only blame yourself if that happens to you. I did this before when working on Nintendo DS games and will never do it again. You have the chance to work on fucking games instead of cleaning toilets so use that in favor of your own growth and not against it.

What I'm trying to say is, if you are deluded with the games industry maybe the problem is not the industry itself but the way you think about your career and future. Maybe all you have to do is to realign your priorities. Maybe not. Only you can tell.

By the way, this is not directed at anyone, I'm just putting into words what I think was doing wrong and what I think I'm doing right

I love it and couldn't imagine doing anything else. Didn't matter if it was a good project, shitty project, doomed to fail pitch or whatever, I loved working on all of them because I get to do my hobby for a living. Getting to release a succesfull game some day would be nice , but in the end it's all about the journey, not the end.

    A straight up +1

Like, sure, there's ups and downs. It happens with every creative and artistic job but man, in the end I'm doing what I only dreamed of doing when I was 18.

And for me what also matters a lot, other than the minute by minute amazing journey that we have, it's what we offer to the players. Like the joy that I feel when I play a Naughty Dog game (just to give an hypothetical example) I just strive that I can offer a similar kind of joy to players out there with what I work on, that feeling of working on something really special, putting it out there and get amazing feedback from the players... man, that's what it's all about for me. I can be a bit insecure sometimes, and listening some good feedback gives me more drive to keep up than anything else. Like "Wow, people actually enjoy what I'm doing, they get out of their way to play it and even comment on it? Fuck... that's awesome I'm gonna do some more then". I know this is very personal, but it's what drives me.

As for the OP, I've also been through some phases where I just feel like doing some personal work instead of focusing 100% on the 9 to 5 job, maybe the latter will "suffer" a little bit by it temporarily, but in the end the inspiration and creativity flow I get when making my personal work will eventually pay off and be poured into the 9 to 5 job.

It does to me sound like you're in need of doing the same, maybe even a little bit more radical, like taking some time off from a full-time job, and doing an indie game, or just some maps for Unreal Tournament or CS:Go or whatever else is out there that you might be interested, what matters in the end of the day is that you feel your time was spent in something meaningful for you, and doing something meaningful to you personally is exactly what you sound like you need.

You are right about that. But as much as the internet helps us to get together it also helps idiots to build networks. It's a force for good and for evil. I don't see it moving just in one direction that helps improving the human condition in the bigger picture.

Look at all the Europeans fighting for Islamic State. That wouldn't be possible without internet and propaganda spread via internet either. Or the way how twitter has deteriorated the quality of journalism. Even on more serious news outlets it's all just "some random guy said this or that on twitter. we don't know if its true but we will report on it anyway just in case".

Well yeah, the internet brings the good and the bad from society. Whereas your points are valid, they're a drop in the ocean of the good that it brought.

Society is improving and growing at a faster rate than ever, the term Moore's law doesn't even make it justice anymore. The main reason of that is single handedly, the internet. If you compare humans to any other animal on this planet, the one thing that makes us special is the ability to communicate, and us humans are communicating more than ever due to the internet, it connected us in a way that whatever the outcome of that is in the future it can only be the outcome of logic and togetherness.

Also, there was a study around that proved that every 2 days we create as much Information as we did up to 2003, and that is absolutely extraordinary.

I am very hopeful and positive for the future, this communication age is the best tool that us people can use to weed out the scum politicians, the shitty practices being made in the economy and i'd even go as far as slowly annihilate the control systems put before us. (Such as religion)

More important than any of this robotic shit we see in the video, is the age of awakening we're going through right now, and again, all due to the ability that we have to communicate.

Im losing confidence in our ability to arrive at this kind of a solution. It seems like income inequality is just growing, and government is more and more carrying water for the same businesses it's supposed to regulate. In other words, what were dealing with really resembles unfettered capitalism.

Yea we are steering towards a dystopian future with all the oligarchs ruling our societies instead of the people. I think there will be some second wave communism or fascism eventualy overthrowing this system. And maybe when that is over mankind will look into a brighter future.

What the hell are you saying man? lmao, some of the best games I've played, ever, were made by Kojima.

If it's not your cup of tea, sure, just say so. But that's utterly not true.

Its not my cup of tea, but this don't invalidate my point of view : this "playable" teaser is just a scripted corridor with cheap writting, i already said that I find Kojima's scenario wobly (and people whom i told so and who disagree are pretty much the ones who play MGS as young kids and enjoyed it).

No need to get mad about my words, i didn't played SH younger

Absolutely, but again, this is a teaser that is not necessary representative of the real and final product. Final product will be third person as well.

Put it this way, what would you prefer, a 2 minute video on youtube with a "PRE-ORDER NOW!!11!" or a playable teaser that's actually original?

Another game pretending to be Silent Hill whilst not being Silent Hill. The franchise has been long dead, RIP Alessa.

Actually this made me feel like the first 3 Silent Hill games, that chill down your spine when you're going a dark corridor. Though the baby crying is a little cliché, that nod to Alessa and the overall structure of nightmarish environment transformation and psychological horror / mind fuck has SH written all over it.
