I tried to follow it but I don't know how to use Maya, and Hessi doesn't explain what the command is to collapse the faces...

I think the dirt around the floor panels to the right is a bit too uniform and noticable over all the panels. Probably won't notice in a small space but it doesn't seem very tileable.

You'll have to sign up to Sourceblog.org, but I wrote a tutorial about it there. (Link).

That would make a lovely camping spot.
Not that I camp. Never.

Wow. That looks really awesome, especially the cars etc. in the sky. The only thing I would suggest is new textures, but if you're not good at that then don't worry - it looks cool but the "combine" metal look doesn't work too well with a sky city, in my opinion. Still, awesome work.

I use an EOS 350D, but then that's about £300 over your budget

The one you were looking at seems pretty good, not excessive MP (which you wouldn't want for a lower-budget camera, because you sacrifice image quality), and it looks cool. So I'd say you made the right choice.

Unless it's baked?

Hahaha, that's brilliant! Allbeit a bit "wtf?".

Wouldn't that be even less taxing if you have things blocking visibility? Unless they're really small...

You need more variation, otherwise it could just be a 256X256 (considering that's what you made and then tiled it for this
). But considering the source image, it turned out really well - although the line running through the middle is the only thing that ruins it on a 1024X1024 space, the rest tiles brilliantly. Nice work. -
Well, in most cases I'd guess the players would be far away from eachother so it wouldn't be too taxing on the game. The map looks awesome, by the way. A demonstration that HL2 can handle large outdoor areas

7 years? It's not like they were making a game engine or a sequel to some best selling game within that time period... no, those kind of things should never take priority, that's just silly.
Actually, most of the engine was already built. There's a reason the Half Life 1 engine is collectively called "Gold Source". Also, Thief 3 took about 3 years to make, and that turned out to be an awesome game. I would say the same about Deus Ex: Invisible War, developed alongside but that was a crap sequel to the best selling game (I think it was?) of 2000.

I like the idea of a second walkway, it makes it harder for the people on the base's just using a sniper rifle (or whatever the Quake4 substitute for one is, I haven't played it). Something I found with the original is that it was too easy to pick people off running down the paths, because both were in clear view. Not bad for the person sniping, but I'm sure it was annoying for the people trying to get the flag.
