Can someone take me back to 1999 please. I bet if They Hunger was released today I'd have to pay £20 to download it.

Would that be such a bad thing?

I can pretty much guarantee you he would have made more mods if you had paid him that 20. Probably we'd have 2-3 times as much awesome content in that world and he might still be doing it today

    Quote from 3Dnj

But mods at first were made by people as a hobby and/or for a portfolio during their freetime. Paying them doesn't necessary mean better and more content, as i know, money doesn't extent the lenght of a day.

Getting paid should be a bonus and should not be the reason of modding.

If you're getting paid to work on a mod you don't need to go do that day job anymore.

To be honest the reason behind the operations needs to be highlighted more with Valve clarifying exactly what you are paying for. People seem to have forgotten the mission statement that came with payback- I saw a lot of threads for vanguard saying things like 'I payed $10 for crap drops, wtf valve!'

I think they muddied their original goal with the CSGO ops by adding that mission structure to the game. I think it's still the best example of how rewarding content creators can improve the game though, Valve should of led with something similar (maps(locations?) + single player missions) for skyrim rather than weapon skins and horse testicles

I totally agree. But I think missions are good, people like them. The CS:GO model is fine imo, just a little bit more mention of rewarding content creators is needed.

It was also extremely frustrating during Gabe's AMA. He didn't mention rewarding content creators enough. Mind you, it could have been seen as hypocritical because of what people perceived as disadvantageous cuts going towards the creators. But I think that just goes to show that the community wants to hear more about this issue, not less.

    Paying for hats is A-OK

Paying for mods is IMPEACH GABEN

Such a waste, such a shame

Hopefully they go back to the drawing board and come up with a solution that's better for customers, without losing sight of their original goal of helping modders.

I believe most (reasonable) people were unhappy with the execution, rather than the overall objective.

Sanctioned, quality control, held responsible. Those are the differences, I am amazed some of you are still defending this terrible system. It is so unbelievably anti consumer.

I think this is my big beef with the system still and the reason I feel I've said enough for the time being.

If they're determined that anyone can put a price tag on anything, I don't agree with that and I think it will fail and hurt everyone. They need to improve the specific details of their plan, hopefully the terrible reception doesn't mean deserving modders never get paid for their hard work

paste it here. I want to see the otherside of this one.

    Quote

So, let me preface this by saying that I understand the concern about paid mods.

-There are technical challenges to making it work. -There are copyright concerns. -Skyrim mods can break the game completely.

Here's what I really want to say: posts like this "they should just get jobs in the industry if they want to get paid!", have it completely wrong. You do not want to force all modders to have to go into the industry in order to get paid. We know that most game developers have lost their way, and make titles that aren't that interesting overall.

Modders going full-time means they don't have to work on games they don't care about, and work for bosses they don't like, in order to survive and pay the bills. Should modders go full-time?

I think the answer is simple: if they're good enough, absolutely. If you can make mods that provide people with countless hours of entertainment, why shouldn't you be able to do so and charge a fair price to do so? So here's what I think needs to be talked about: -The splits. I think we can agree that if modders are selling something they made, they should at least get a majority share in the sale of that item.

-Free mods should be allowed and encouraged if appropriate for that mod. -There should be a selection process that ensures that only mods of a certain level of popularity and verified capability go on sale. This part is common sense to me, and it should have been included in the deal to begin with.

I earn a good living making maps for Counter-Strike. By sending the signal that you hate when modders, mappers, whatever, charge money for their stuff, you're saying I should go work for generic AAA game developer, and that kinda sucks. Because the freedom I have thanks to Valve and the Steam workshop means a great deal to me, I'll go ahead and stick my neck out for the gaming brigade and see where the chips fall.

I also put together a whole article. On Reddit most of the post I've made literally just get mindlessly downvoted if not outright censored like before. I don't give a fuck, I'm going to speak my mind on this issue period.

And finally: It's absolutely impossible to sell CS:GO maps through workshop. There's nobody who would buy them. I am subscribed to more than 100 maps, but I do it because I just want to look at them and sometimes leave some reference... I wouldn't pay a single cent to do this. And if some of our fun maps we play sometimes with friends got charged, we would just find another one, there are plenty of them in the workshop.

Agreed. I don't think every game is appropriate for this model. Games like L4D I can see it working, since they're campaigns with a co-op and SP component, whereas I think the Operation model fits well for CS:GO, TF2, etc.

These things will be changed when there is a monetary incentive to improve them. Otherwise you're right, we should continue to not pay modders anything and expect a very low level of professionalism and effort

The money you guys are so petrified of will provide every reason for actually excellent mods, and even if there is a mountain of crap, the cream will simply rise to the top as it tends to do in every other workshop (not necessarily in ratings, since those are exploitable, but more in media attention/downloads/hype)

Edit: Gabe weathers the storm http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comme…mods_and_steam/

    Quote from Erratic

This is exactly why the mod community was an incredible thing. It wasn't a professional environment, there were no expectations and wtf are you talking about with low levels of effort?

What kind of fascist shit is this.

Paying people is fascist? As for the effort thing, it generally will not be possible to put as much effort into something if you're doing it part-time, as you would be able to if you were being paid to do it full-time. Even if you're super passionate about something, working 9-5 is gonna cut into your ability to make mods.

All that's going to happen is individuals develop a reputation and brand name in the community. So if Jack's animeboob mod isn't updated regularly, then I won't purchase another Jack product. This is how individuals become a) able to become full-time modders b) much more professional and skilled c) members of an entire community where everyone is earning dough d) personally accountable for their work and e) potentially pretty well compensated

Jack has a real incentive to not release crap, because his brand will be affected by that and thus his earning potential

...aaaaand that's what so painfully stupid about people on Mapcore of all places not getting it, and not seeing an opportunity. That shit is just facepalm.jpeg

So I'm of this thought on this topic:

25% goes to the mod author 45% goes to Bethesda 30% goes to Valve.

    https://np.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/c…cussion_thread/

Regardless of whether Valve or Bethesda feel these figures are fair, they reflect very poorly on the revenue scheme. That detail needs to be changed and improved, I believe. We all know that Bethesda and Valve don't need the money, so why depress the creator cuts this much?

Secondarily, the public response to this plan seems to have gone really badly. The irony of this is, the real people it hurts is the content creators who rely on Valve to market their plans a little bit more effectively than what we've seen thus far. If the public response is negative, that will mean the scheme can't be effective, and creators won't get paid much. Valve has always relied heavily on customer good will, and it's a big trump card to cede for any reason.

Asking content creators to go out their and dive on their swords defending this plan without public good will is a great way to leave everyone disgruntled.

Creators can also still release stuff for free or basically accept tips, in the form of "pay what you like" model. So nothing has really changed as far as that stuff goes.

The difference now is that people can market their good ideas, and one good idea could earn you a lot of dough that you would otherwise not be getting. Word of mouth on one really cool mod could make that creator revenue that previously would have been completely lost, even though that creator was providing people with hours of enjoyment and did deserve compensation for their hard work

If you're worried that a lot of people will try to market their stuff and it will flood the marketplace, I look at that as being Valve's problem to fix, it's not going to prevent their from being deserving and high quality content.
