They were pretty open in the past about how much the console live system messes with how they like to develop games. (of note is how Valve was forced to charge for left 4 dead content updates that the pc got for free). Theyve also been open about how developing games for the ps3 and the strained relationship they had with Sony during that time basically solidified their opinion that consoles were not worth it.

At the same time maybe in this situation, Sony has learned to stop being a pain in the ass with devs after a lot of missed opportunities and Valve could see value in the PSVR system as a way to get VR games more mainstream attention. But its also doubtful that the same company thats working on BCI believing it to be the future, would go back to what they essentially consider out-moded hardware.

While all of that is true, we are a long way removed from the PS3 era, and although I have not owned a console (other than the Switch) in many, many years, it seems like there is a lot more respect and understanding of "games as a service" these days.

Granted, I haven't even heard of a reliable method to actually buy a PS5 right now, so my investment in Sony products is extremely low.

This does leave Valve with a lot of leverage to speak with Sony about exclusives.

Sony’s stock has been hit by skepticism about their ability to compete. If I were Gabe I would ask Sony for a ton of upfront money to develop a Portal or Team Fortress sequel (for example), as a PC/PlayStation exclusive. Not that funding ever seems to be a problem for Valve, but who doesn’t love free money?

Sony has a stronger track record in games and a stronger incentive to succeed. Then again, pissing Microsoft off might jeopardize the whole PC ecosystem, which is Valve’s bread and butter.

Valve usually just tries to get along with everybody, so it’s probably not their style to begin with. Maybe that’s the smartest move, but I bet Sony would bend over backwards for them…

this feels like the right move for both sides, but as a gamer I'm pretty apathetic. don't really have much emotional investment in any of those IP's anymore, if I ever did

Overwatch is about the only thing on that list that remotely appeals to me

It’s the most analog, in terms of tech, film in the genre I’ve seen in a while.

But joking aside, I fully agree and that's why I wrote the boundaries are getting slim but not gone completely; a trained eye can still see it's computer generated but it's becoming more difficult to discern with each engine update

I remembered your post last time about pre-2010 gaming era nostalgia and I'm noticing this awful trend now for most games, where the graphics nowadays are getting photorealistic but the games themselves are getting dumber and too mainstream/simplistic.

Couple of days ago I watched a video comparing Far Cry 2 from 2007 to Far Cry 5 from 2018, and my goodness, FC2 blows FC5 straight out of the water. FC5 is a bit prettier in the graphics department but that's about it; FC2 is leaps and bound ahead in all other fields. You can easily feel the cringe seeing the parts where FC5 treats the player like an idiot who needs constant handholding and dumbing things down.

I think the little light scattering across the incredibly detailed geometry is what seems really promising from a photorealism standpoint. The fucking scary thing is, to be photorealistic, it still seems about half as detailed as it would need to be.

Photorealism feels *close* in 2022, like. We're almost there...

Looking at this shot for example, parts feel photoreal

and other parts feel like a phony mess

asset quality almost seems to differ in the shots, I find this whole rock set pretty unconvincing

There's also a playable demo that you can check out here: DEMO

This was my most time consuming project that I've started back in 2018, but then scrapped and returned to it in 2021.

It took about 8 months to complete and was a great learning experience for me.

I feel like we are one Unreal Engine away from photorealism, based on these screenshots. They’re close but you can still tell it’s computer generated

No, no new weapons. Just new story and levels and animations.

Honestly even though people seem to want to see the trailer in advance, I’m worried that we won’t end up converting as many eyeballs to downloads as we would with a day of launch. Valve’s social media game is seemingly non-existent outside of CS:GO, so there won’t be any support there. Ultimately my priority is to get workshop downloads and people into the game

    Just saw The Last Duel.

Holy shit this movie got ruined in the editing room.

Spoiler 30-40 unnecessary and repetitive scenes, including a fifteen minute rape sequence that is repeated almost verbatim twice, with indistinguishable differences. A cinematic crime.
