You don't outright ban anything entertainment related and claim to be an open democratic society. I don't care if its a game about horse porn rate it 18+ and watch it fail commercially, you don't ban.

fmp i dont get you. In the one moment you show a lot of tolerance for some oldschool duke 3d screens in the next moment you bash a mapper for something that in my opinion was a lot harder work.

Heres where you're wrong as far as I'm concerned. One person critiques someone using an old engine to its full potential and another person sees someone posting something thats using a new one to a lesser degree (to quote someone else) "fairly boring. There's not much to work with."

And it has nothing to do with personal opinions, I have alot of respect for JeanPaul's work and I've told him as much numerous times on forums and one on one conversations and I hope it stuck. Its you thats making things personal. And why you also choose to bring Quakis into this is beyond me and not appreciated, but speaks volumes.

Its not even the best pointless cylinder thing you've ever posted for christ sake, theres maybe 3 textures in the whole screenshot, you use abysmal HL2 models that light just as poorly in bright sunlight, and you have a huge decal that ends midway through the enormous brushwork tube.

I'm not trying to "hate on you, dawg" I'm just saying what you posted was pretty much a neat little expiriment that while that would probably be best served kept on your computer in a little folder called "compulsion management - cylindrical" and away from people who are ready and willing to pass esthetic judgement. Which leaves me wondering just what you expected, exactly?

edit: Yes you're not wrong Defrag. Then again everyone knows his work and this is not his best but at the end of the day he posted it and got some crit, I think honest.

These little visual tubes don't turn into maps, regardless and I think we see them at face esthetic value. Which in this case would be strange becuase there is very little.

Interesting if not thoroughly unimpressive and stark and ugly... no artistic merit really other than you made it in an editor that would prefer not to see such things, but on a smaller scale it would be a unique environment to walk around in. I do have a desire to jump down and watch my body ragdoll down the slope...

perhaps this map is telling, psychologically

Well beyond any map criticism you need to take your screenshots at higher settings, there is no excuse to show off low quality screens. As for the map, it looks good but if you had put a little bit more time into the lighting and getting some more visually striking things in like fire and smoke and craters and chimney smoke - things that draw the eye you would probably not be getting as many complaints about the map looking generic or boring

More like [/excuses] or even [/Doesnt have ability to use new editors] but definitely not [/rant]

You could have access to the UE3 editor and you haven't produced anything with it, hence you're useless and whatever you show is worth shitting on. Because Source is old? Right.

Give the guy a break he clearly enjoys using the older engines. Its harmless.

I disagree. Finished work is a forum for feedback, used by members to garner constructive ciriticism from their peers to improve their skillset. Portfolios are a far more in depth, personal profile of an individual, their history and abilities.

I think there is room for both

    Indeed!

The map is not so hot ingame, the lighting in particular just feels really akward and jarring to me.

I would say that there is a ton of really well made custom content actually put to relatively poor use jammed halfway into streets or badly lit or used in a really scatterplot way. It has mega potential though. Step 1 in my mind is change the lighting, but thats my opinion.

I like this idea but it would make the finished work gallery forum redundant...

To a degree, it might be redudant for DODS or CSS maps but you don't ever really see mod work in the finished work gallery or minor/random models or textures etc etc, its a much more varied and comprehensive view of a person's work. If a person did create a CSS map and posted it in finished work gallery and also put it on their portfolio page there would be some crossover in that case yes, but I think not a big deal.

I got to play the first few levels and I seem to be fairly happy with the game. The atmopshere is one of the most important parts of the game and what this game did right was nail it. Negative aspect is that the characters are not that good compared to newer games and the things you can interact with are highlighted. The level design is very nice, given illusions of choice and having dead ends with secrets.I want to go and play more, so might write a more detailed review of the game.

good idea, but it would be something along the lines of 1 thread (and 0 posts?) per person.

Exactly, one thread per person its just the person whose portfolio it is

    1)creates a thread

    2) puts their maps + images in it

    3) people respond to that thread

the thread serves as a little "mapcore" portfolio, just a place where people can comment on other people's maps or work etc in their own personal thread.
