I think this is a great, great idea. First of all you come across as very sincere and genuine and the organization of the video is effective, it's concise and you hit all the right notes. One thing I would suggest is that your work doesn't appear connected to a great game.

I would suggest perhaps making a TF2 asset or something where you could communicate the transformation of your piece of art into the game world. That would be an effective addition to what you have here, IMO. Other than that, I like the idea and I like the initiative.

he did a really good job. he mentioned the problems with the plot without being overly negative, which is reasonable considering its obviously such a great game

thanks guys. not much more to show of 747, i just kind of made the building and then lost interest because the brushwork was a mess. same thing with that other source map. it took me a long time to get back into the groove of making proper source geometry, and to a certain extent I still have yet to do it completely correctly

this is not new. if you listen to howard stern (reminiscing about the days of terrestrial radio) he bitches about the radio "rating" system, similar to neilsen. it apparently benefits the big players in media to use obscure rubrics, probably because higher-up execs can cloud the system for their bosses, keeping their jobs despite not doing particularly much

    hahahha oh come on dude...

we love liam. just teasing him a bit, lighten up geez fwiw i actually expected somebody to answer it, but at the same time if people were talking about my presence in the office or whatever on a forum behind my back, it might not be fair to that person. anyways back to the thread...

i think the very initial part of the game where you're ogign to the lighthouse was pretty, but was anybody else completely stunned by how gorgeous the section where you descend into the city was? With the light streaming through the letters, and the watery church area? I think Irrational took the approach of making light as central to this game as they made water as central to bioshock 1, because by far the most exceptional part of this game for me was the god beams. Visually they are just above and beyond everything i've seen in a game

Haha! I wasn't asking if he was actually a complete dick, I was just wondering if Vivi had met the man! Anyway, forget I ever asked

Dude that bit at the beginning was fantastic. The music was perfect.

This song is great too. I'm not 100% sure when it plays... I think it's when you first step into Columbia once you've left the cathedral/church area. Very foreboding, and foreshadows the disharmony that is to come later in Columbia

    great crit

Thanks for the Crit. An update called RC2 went out that addressed quite a lot of these points, so check it out! I would chalk a couple up to personal preference (such as the drop down from t spawn, I wanted it to be kind of skillful and not just automatic), and some come down to my n00by-ness with optimizing for source (such as the unfortunate portalling, which I take responsibility for). A big learning experience since previously I've relied on folks like 3Dnj to do some of the dirty work. Naturally I made a lot of mistakes that are very tough to go back and correct, unfortunately.

Hopefully I can eventually improve FPS a lot. Then again, I still may need someone's help to get an additional 10-15 FPS for the map, since I've sort of exhausted a lot of the obvious tutorials and need someone with a bit more expertise to take a look and critique the hinting/clipping/areaportal job I've done, perhaps giving me some pointers on how I can improve.

    Thanks again

What's wrong with asking that? :S

i mean its not a crazy question. just came across as funny. also ifyou think about it, he must obviously be extraordinarily involved given all the shit thats clearly taken straight out of his brain. just my thoughts

Lets all be honest and admit the story makes very little sense and isn't well explained. The skyhooks thing and the ability jump a million feet in the air to get on one bugged me. I guess its filed under "magnets, how do they work?" but then again its not discussed enough to put that cognitive dissonance out of my mind... this game doesn't communicate to the player sometimes. That bugs me. A lot of stuff in this game just plain bugged me on a subconscious level.

I will go ahead and state the fact that many times playing it I felt in love with it (right around the level where you're exploring the giant city and the bank) but after that things really took a nosedive. It became obvious the story wouldn't resolve well, and that mission where you're taking down the zepellins was a total pain in the butt for me, and the asylum, I just didn't get it. I didn't get the story I was supposed to be experiencing, I didn't get the enemies and the whole situation. I want things to be explained on a basic level like that, don't just throw me in this weird place with no grounding...

This game is a bit of a let down for me not intrinsically because it was obviously one of the best SP games and 60 bucks you can spend right now or any time. But this game had so much going right for it and it failed so terribly in a bunch of other ways that I feel just aren't right... it's a bit of a shame. I loved the game but my experience coming away from it is that it should have been so much better

I give it a solid 8.5 out of 10, but with some common sense changes I think that goes to 10/10, one of the most perfect games ever. But we've got that gulf there, and its so clear what went wrong... damn, its just a shame

edit: re-reading this thread, i agree with you guys who said the story never clicked for you.

this is not the sign of a good story to me, it's the sign of an author designing a world where they don't have to make difficult choices and commit to anything, and as a result the fun of a good story is lost in a muddled mess where the player is expected to "use their imagination" to design the plot. unfortunately some of us have shit to do, that's why we pay writers to write stories
