humor is a big part of the gta universe as well. it's not some dumb sandbox experience where there is just a facade of emulating reality, the fun thing about gta is where it breaks from reality and makes you laugh or cringe (turn on the radio).
it's nto about emulating life, its about emulating it 99% and then utterly warping it on the last 1% in a brilliant, but not exactly subtle way

To sum up the advise in this thread, be a neurotic perfectionist. Don't release anything unless it's absolutely amazing and you're fully proud of it. If you see something really good, ignore it and pretend it doesn't exist. Run away, hide from it like a vampire hides from light. If there are tools available that allow you to deconstruct how that awesome thing was made, do not use them, and also pretend those do not exist. If there are communities where people congregate to discuss cool things, run away from those as well.

They aren't doing in-house hardware, I guess. Frankly I'm not sure its an area they need to get involved in.
PERHAPS they will work with liscensing and third party hardware. Either way, I'm really into steam stuff and I'm not even sure I woudl buy a steam box. Why bother when I have a great PC? Living room machine I guess. Not for me.

Interesting article from the head of Valve's hardware division that was laid off, plus most of her team. Sounds like Valve's wonderful-sounding flat hierarchy can lead to problems such as people playing the system and being really lazy, hidden power pockets, etc. It kind of makes sense if you're one of the MapCorians who's ever worked in an actual development team, I always suspected Valve's set-up seemed too good to be true.

Valve's 'perfect hiring' hierarchy has 'hidden management' clique like high school
More pertinent to this thread though, it begs the question of WTF is actually going on at Valve regarding the Steam Box. With the thick wall of secrecy all we can do is excitedly speculate, but stories like that don't sound like Valve really knows what it's doing in the hardware field, nor is it giving those who do the freedom required.
honestly, i fail to see what value she ever added to teh company, it seemed like she was making gizmos that entertained her and the six other people in the hardware division, but added no value to the company. I think that's bad for Valve either way, they've either hired people who are not useful to staff this extraneous little creative nook, or they've got a toxic atmosphere going not providing enough resources for interesting but infant tech. Having heard her speak and finding her a bit head-in-the-clouds myself, I suspect it was the former, and I think that's why Gabe was like uh just take your stuff, we don't really care.
It looks bad for Valve either way, imo, a breakdown in hiring or a breakdown in management, but I don't think she was this wonderful employee, it seemed like she was difficult to work with and adding little value, and then predictably turned around and bad mouthed her former employer as you would expect from somebody with this kind of a day to day negativity. Just reading the tea leaves from the outside.

its easier to learn how to do things but the things you're doing are a bit more complex than in the old days. I think if I was starting now I would be overwhelmed and probably give up
