but then why climb everest, trek to the poles or sail around the world? obviously national pride played a part back then, but landing on the moon was the biggest achievement in human history, mars would be that x100.

the road at the start of the 2nd level is now finished, just need to connect the finale and that map is done (although i have about 4 brushes, a couple of entities and 1% texinfos to do it with...).

i'm thinking that if the 3rd map (the brown one) is done in time, i might release those 3 maps as a kind of beta/demo by christmas, just because this has been going about 5 years now.

the only problem with space exploration is that it isn't 1950 anymore and we know there's nothing out there except certain death for anyone stupid enough to try.

The Apollo program created $14 for every $1 it cost (according to Brian Cox), through jobs, technology etc.

One asteroid could contain the entire world's wealth in raw materials.

NASA is also a science organisation so learning about the history/geology of planets, possibility of life etc by exploring those is a valid use of its funds, even if people don't see any direct benefits to their lives.

The shuttle was never going to go to past low-earth orbit, it did do some important work but the whole project (and the ISS especially) is just a big distraction and a step backwards. If it means the private sector takes over ferrying and cargo jobs while NASA can focus on sending people to Mars or asteroids then it's a good thing, I'm not sure that will happen though.

I live just outside of Birmingham in Walsall (I actually applied to Codemasters too but by the time my emails got through the position was gone |: ), a lot of parts are really rough but you probably get that in most cities. I'm on Virgin Media and they used to be really unreliable but the last few years I've had no problems, and they also permanently double your speed every so often which is nice.

why do my doors open automatically when the map loads? i haven't edited the prefab, but they're set to open when the button is pressed via a relay. i tried deleting the button since i'm not using it, and using the map-start logic to close them, but they stay open whatever happens.

and how even after however many hours it took, it never felt like you were doing the same things over and over.

also, how does co-op with other players work? we checked the hub afterwards, and we both had ticks next to each level, but if you play with someone else, can you only play levels both of you have already completed, or does only one player need to have them unlocked?

    Shift + B: Block tool

I literally use this once for every map I make. everything else is a shift+drag copy, and if i need another cube and only have angled brushes, i clip the sides straight.

another shortcut i only learned recently which is sometimes useful - hold space and drag to pan the 2d viewports. for years i've been zooming out and back in again to pan around, so that can save some time.

i have so many of these, but no screenshots. i did find some for two maps though:

ctf_europa. i started this for the tf2maps ctf contest. it was way too cramped for tf2 so i started opening it up after the contest finished but forgot about it:

The BBC has been like this since the day after the quake. At the time, the plant was under control and being cooled. It only became more serious a few days ago when it caught fire and even then it's still not as serious as it's made out to be. But while tens of thousands were still missing (and an oil refinery burnt not far away, which says it all about nuclear vs fossil fuels and how people perceive them), they almost totally ignored that and went on and on about 'nuclear explosions' or getting Greenpeace in to tell us all how this will be like Chernobyl x100.

A nuclear reactor survives one of the world's worst ever natural disasters and everyone starts calling for nuclear to be abandoned. BP causes one of the worst man-made disasters in all of history, and months later we're back to deep-water drilling.

I decided to make some modular props as a test to see if I could, based on some Chinese apartments. I've got them into UDK but the lighting is all weird, even though I set up a 2nd uv channel for the lightmaps, so I think I'm missing something obvious. Also UDK completely disregards the pivot points I set in Max.

"But there isn't enough money"Space flight and exploration shouldn't cost money, this is going to be our salvation one day I think. The sooner they can do stuff without the constraints of a stupid budget, the better.

The Apollo programme made back $14 for every dollar the US spent on it. They probably wouldn't get back so much these days because it was all totally new at the time, but you'd make so much money from a mission to Mars (and eventually asteroid mining, I think one asteroid contains several times the USA's total wealth in raw materials). The problem is that the money would be made through jobs, research etc which wouldn't be obvious to the public. That's why they waste money sending people into orbit to do pointless experiments on the ISS, because it's the easiest way for NASA to show they're actually spending their (tiny) budget on something.

This one actually looks pretty good. I never liked 0rigins or Homecoming, they just seemed like fan mods which recycled too much stuff from 1-3, and even copied ideas from the movie which was just an abomination. The new team have scrapped all that though, and said every person should see their own version of the town (which was actually explicitly stated several times in 2 and 3) so all the monsters are completely new.

":2hzm34ug]That's not bad, is that LP tho? Can we see some wires? And what's it for?

it is low-poly, there's loads of optimising still to do but i'm keeping it fairly low. it'll eventually be imported into udk as a non-playable portfolio scene, but it's mainly to practice making and texturing a level in max.
