what is your source for this? It seemed like it was going to be much more open and free than that?

Sorry i think i'm wrong about that. It seems to be for commerical games only though, not for modifications.

The SDK updates over the years have been notoriously bad, not because they add new features, but that they continually break something or everything for 90% of the userbase. There have been some great SDK upgrades however - notably when models became visible in the 2d views, the release of 3d shaded view etc. 3d Lighting preview would have been added to that list if it was accurate and displayed data from all light sources, not just spot lights (and had light bouncing).

I too was also excited about the prospect of 'steam works' untill i found out it was just something that was becoming part of the license when you buy into the engine. It seems like it would've been a great opportunity to really tie everything together and build upon the centralised download/update/patching that steam currently provides from commercial products. Imagine it: You make a mod, build a couple of quick maps for it, maybe add in a custom weapon. That same day you upload onto the steam works mod list, maybe in a subcateogry relevant to your mod, within minutes of uploading it you have interested parties downloading it. Feedback start pouring in through the built in bug report and messages system. People start contacting you over friends as they see you were the author of mod and start to give you encouragement and ideas, a few of them even tell you they want to get involved and make content for you.

You make some changes to the mod, recompile it and send it to the steamworks server. A popup comes up for anyone who has downloaded the mod and ticked the box that says they want to recieve updates and informs them an update is available - they click yes and start automatically patching their version of the mod. A little later you decide you want to make the mod private for a while, while you add in new features that need proper testing. You password the mod on steamworks. Everyone retains their previous copies but now when they browse the mod list and see an update for the mod they will need a password.

Something like this would be of phenominal use to everybody. It could even use a P2P system to help with the server load when sharing the mods.

The one and only time i've used radient was once for quake 3 and i seem to remember being trapped building in a single perspective view window.

  • Automatic AO / Global Illumination In 3Dsmax?

    • Zeta
    • February 8, 2008 at 7:42 AM

I've been searching for a simple and effective way to bake lighting onto my models for a while now. From google searching and talking to a few people I've gotten the impression that there might be a way to automatically render to texture ambient occulusion maps in 3dsmax at the touch of the button, is this the case?

So far in my pursuit of nicely baked shadows ive managed to render to texture shadows cast from a skylight onto my models but there are some downsides to this. One being that i seem to encounter some errors whereby several faces don't appear to recieve any shadowing when they clearly should be, screwing up the output.

Ideally I want to be able to automatically generate an AO map from just the mesh data aone, no actual light, so there are shadows in the recesses etc from all angles.

Does anyone here have any experience with this?

    cheers

Shadow of the Beast was known to be one of the hardest games.

Oh god that game was horrid / trippy.

My dad bought the cartridge abroad and thusly found it would not work on my european megadrive.

He literally hacksawed off the additional bits of plastic on the cartridge that prevented the game from fitting in the cart slot, after playing, i really wish he hadn't.
