damn warby thats awesome, great design! I guess models in source look best when they have lightmaps on them . That smoke looks weird though! It would be awesome if you could create rotating normal mapped smoke sprites lit with orange light from underneath, i'm not sure if that is even possible in source

He could bake the whole render (including rendered normalmap and textures ofc) into a texture with such a light... That's at least possible in Blender :S

You don't need to make textures to make a 'new' theme Go take a look at some of the 1024 contest entries and you can see how some level designers can construct really different themes using stock resources.

But then again, it still makes you kind of limited.

Why are they producing level concept art if the game is going to be composed of a large amount of community content?

We make the interesting part (style etc.), you do the boring part (make the level itself)?

I vote for custom content in that case!

EDIT: How about: A surrealistic scene, with only 15 textures and only one light? Pretty crazy idea, I know

This actually looks like the Ground Control 2 engine with Ground Control 2 gameplay with NATO and Soviet units.

And it's from the same publisher and developer.

    How innovative.

Is more metal than me, I'd say. And can squeeze lots of good stuff out of GoldSrc.

That's right, we don't need mappers. That's because we're planning on buying the maps from the community.

I already see a professional Warsow approach  Good luck!

One mmo I really did enjoy was EVE Online. Contrary to popular belief this game is both hardcore, or casual. I suppose you'd just have to try it to understand what I mean, but they balance skill training with the gameplay very nicely. Eve's playerbase is growing exponentially as well.

lol JP and sindwiller - I suppose we should all be modeling and mapping in notepad because only amateurs use programs designed for the task at hand.

There's no Notepad for Linux D:

No, seriously. It's not just Crazy Bump. It's all this procedural stuff in general. Procedural texture generation, procedural model generation, procedural this, procedural that - Hell, I even know a guy who want's to get rid off his artists in his team because their "lazy asses" and "slow" etc. by replacing their stuff with procedural content. Everyone praises procedural textures these days.

And besides, .NET doesn't run on my box
