Thank you
Sentura took the words out of my mouth (I suck sometimes at getting thoughts down on paper or posts)
Also, my mother once needed a new harddrive for her "power" mac thing g4 or something. (keep in mind this is like 6 months ago) So knowing Mac's reputation, I decided to go with her when she took it to the "genius bar" (good lord that gets me everytime
a bunch of one button fuckheads who know jackshit about computers) just so she didnt get fucked out of a deal. I asked them, how much for a new 500gb internal for this mac? Dude said "$200 plus installation" and then immediately I started laughing and asked why it costs so much. His response? "Its just a better harddrive". So then I asked what made it "better" and he said "mac makes it" - I'm sorry but thats just downright brainwashed O_OAnywhoo it turned out it was some seagate 500gb 5400rpm (holy  ) that they were charging $200 for. So I told my mother to GTFO that store and we did, I went home, ordered a 600gb western digital off newegg for $60 and installed it in like 5 minutes when it got there.
And finally, if I see one more pompous prick assed little mac commercial making fun of "PC's" I might fucking vomit. On top of never praising their own product and only putting down the competition, THEY ARE MAKING FUN OF A "PERSONAL COMPUTER" WHICH TECHNICALLY IS WHAT THEY ARE TOO" fuck I want to shoot someone when I see those commercials. (sorry about the anger here, the mac ads really get to me for some reason

Well dont think my "hatred" is unmerited due to lack of Mac 'usage'. I have been around Macs (and using them a lot) since 1995 when my father got his first one for PS work in his home office. Since then Ive used the colorful mac shit brick thing with one cord or whatever its deal was and MANY others. And more recently their laptops. I just cant stand it, its so terrible

I could go on, but eh I need to finish LC
-
I dont feel like making a long post. But I have no clue what you are talking about 40 command line strings?! I think someone jumped on the Mac bandwagon WHEN DOS WAS STILL BEING USED
Seriously get windows 7 on a 64 bit machine and try to tell me OSx even comes CLOSE to it.
-
Dont mean to jump on the hate wagon here, but FUCK, how can anyone use a mac and consider it a better machine?! It boggles my mind
Its like a PC only slower

Also people who say macs are better for anything are idiots.

I do like their cases and laptop housings though (worst part is that is enough for some people to buy a mac)
-
Well thanks for that
Alex doesnt get on till later though
-
You know, Alex (the thread starter) asked me before hand if he should post his idea he's been working on here, and wondered if he would get flamed or shot down. I said, "No, they are a very mature game design community and are actually very nice"
Real fucking great, guys

Try messing with a design that is exactly like mine only without the vertical arches?
-
Well using displacements may increase performance, but file size and load time will be astronomical (displacements are very bloated)
Valve only gets away with it because all users are forced to download and play their maps

Anywhoo, this is what I came up with. The size is the same, and the number of top down sides is too. The only thing I changed was the number of sides in the arch from 7 to 8 as 7 should never be used it causes a lot of alignment problems. (unless you dont really care when using displacements, I see what you were doing)

This is with damn near perfect alignment and a perfect sealant of all the seams.
I DID NOT use the vertex tool once in these shots, its 100% standard arches, toruses, clip tool, and automated rotation at 5 degree increments (360/72 = 5)
My favorite part now is you know those pipe supports in your torus screenshots? Well you can place those on each of these supports and it looks great. Granted you would probably have to make these supports into a prop because of how many there are, its still a great concept.

I haven't used unreal ed so I wouldn't know, but i can say it's certainly counter intuitive in hammer.
nah, I don't give a shit. This stuff is just for hobby sake, it's not like this is for a mod or job.
Oh man why is this 7 sided??

Always use numbers that dont create flat sides on the arch (8-12-16-32-64 etc)
And why is it 36 units thick? Thats an odd number, try to stay on powers of 8 or so if at all possible
Let me whip something up real quick

If it doesnt align after making it then you are doing it wrong
Trust me on this, I am remaking lambda core

-
Why do I not see a giant torus in the layout?

i don't care about placing stuff inside the torus, i am more wondering how you get the torus itself aligned with regular base geometry... say if you have a quarter torus quarter pipe (a torus corner 90 degree corner, if you will), and you want to align it so that you can use a cylinder as the floor, and a cylinder to make it fit with the ceiling - how would you go about that?it's covered with a glass material and will be visible on both sides.
Easy, you always make everything in the game (arch, torus, cylinder) at 360 degrees otherwise you get wrongly shaped brushes (this is a general rule)
Quote from KungFuSquirrelThe torus, arch, and cylinder tools snap all verts to the 1 grid, so as long as you use the exact same radius and diameter and the same number of subdivisions, it should fit.
Wrong, the torus does not snap on any grid size
-
I am intrusive I know, but I have a hard time explaining myself in words sometimes
So what if you were to send me that torus/surrounding area and I can show you what I mean by supports?

I would totally understand if you dont want to do that
-
Zete is partially right.
Its about making the torus 360 degrees at first and then taking taking the number of top view sides in the torus and dividing it into 360 so you know how many degrees to manually rotate each piece.
Example: 32 sided torus
copy an arch to top middle, then copy it to bottom middle - group then shift copy into the same place - without moving it, hit ctrl + m and rotate it 90 degrees - group all four then shift copy into the same exact place - then ctrl + m and rotate 45 degrees.
Repeat this process till you get all sides covered. (90, 45, 22.5, 11.25) and from start to finish it should take about 2 minutes tops. This makes everything inside the torus perfectly aligned with the torus even though its not on the grid anymore (and never will be, but come on, its a fucking torus)
I need to make a video tutorial
-
Wait what? You never align verticies on a torus/the arches in a torus. Its just not possible
-
Yeah man, best image ever

-
It needs a nice thin and clean framing. Like in this tunnel I made a few years back

Or like in this old unused apprehension concept for black mesa

Dont want to sound arrogant but I know A LOT about this shit, so if you have ANY trouble with the torus/arch tool or properly detailing a torus type area just hit me up on AIM or steam chat (steam chat would probably be better) and I would be glad to help
EDIT - search on steam for [bMS Dev] JeanPaul (go ahead roll your eyes
)EDIT AGAIN - This really makes me want to whip up another torus mini map deal again just for kicks

torustorustorustorustorus

Should give it some supports or something, I hate it when people just slap lights on blank walls
