Sounds cool, don't know if I can contribute too much to it but I'll sure take some look at the project and link my sister to it (She speaks japanese (and another 6 languages :S )) and might be interested in helping (since she's teaching latinamerican immigrant kids japanese she's quite some experience with that kind of stuff)

Valve tech is also positive because the number of people around here who can actually play the entries would be much higher than the number of people who own Crysis, UT3, Doom3 and a Valve Game.

Don't know if this works but Portal The First Slice should be enough to run Portal Custom-Maps (if you preload the full game it is?)

That's a My Book II which all have the slot design if I remember correctly. The previous generation had the vaguely 360-like look to them.

yes - funny anecdote: I got the mybook (1) on my 17th or 18th birthday and had told my parents that I'd need 500GB nothing else. So I opened up the package half a sleep and went like "WTF - i don't want no f*cking xbox 360" :S Realized that it was no xbox but a hdd then I turned the package around and saw more of it then just the Button ^^

Six years was Half-Life 2 (which was about 40m$) as an example.

a little off topic but tailing on the income-question:

What do people at the age of 40+ do in the game industry? atm everyone here is 20 to 30 years old (at least most of us) - but how are job perspectives with 40, 50 or even 60 within the industry (or are we all going to be unemployed at that age?) - I can't figure out everyone writing books and become consultants, lobbyists and major-publishers :S

    Easy calculation:

    6 years development

avg 150 devs of all kind with avg income of 2500$ per month

    2500 * 150 * 12 * 6 = 27 Million $. Add some freelancing, outsourcing, licensing, hardware, power-costs, water-costs etc. and you are pretty much at 40 Million $

Half-Life 2 was about 40 million $ as well - Hourences - GOW did cost 10m$ without UE3 licensing/own engine development. Games like GTA4 which develop a full city and/or a complete new engine as Half-Life 2 with Source won't get cheaper (at least if you want to keep the same quality).

The big problem about comparing Game Development Costs against Movie Costs is that there are a lot more specific technical costs bound to Game Development. No movie team licenses UE3, Source or iD Tech, neither do they have to invent the camera again and again. As buddy pointed out I'd compare the profit/win of games and movies but there's little info about how much profit games make up atm. It'd be nice though to have such stats with details on online distribution and monthly fees etc. and split that down to how much one (individual and company) gains in the process of creating games.

looking for paying 50% extra for the brand?

    http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/

tbh - there's not many laptops fully capable of gaming and graphic design but yes macbook, alienware and dell highend will do it then. If this is outta your budget go for something like Samsung or Fujitsu Siemens. I've seen good gaming capable systems from both these brands and I think you have some good support for these (esp. Samsung has not disappointed me to this point and I have worked with 4 or 5 different samsung laptops for quite a while).

Why not have a profile option and instead of the list a small page that reads all the infos and displays them. You'd need to check your details every two month otherwise they will be displayed in grey (outdated) and after half a year of not checking they would disappear from the list. It's not that a big deal to have an email send "Hey pls check out your given infos as you last updated them 2 months ago".

    Profile options:

    Christian- and Surename

You are: a) Professional in a Studio b) Professional for Freelance availble onsite c) Professional for Freelance availble offsite d) University e) apprenticeship f) Internship (multiple answers possible (e.g. Freelance on and off site or Pro at Ubi-Campus or Apprenticeship at Raven)

Then you could pick from a list of occupations like Enviroment Artist, 2D-Artist, 3D-Artist and so on

Text Box for a short summary which will display then you hover over the name

Studio (If your studio is not in the list yet PM a Mod to add it to the list or maybe one could add that himself)

would be awesome if the system automatically tracks a history and would link to this thread so we continue to talk about the current happenings (as Hourences pointed out)

Thanks both of you - Jenn0_Bing these are some great tips, thanks.

So far I've been using the normalmap for highlighting only - had a look at the TF2 textures and saw this as well. I hand painted most of the texture, apart from some background pattern for the metal which was generated painting some random stuff and using the Palette knife. I'll try to go for the edgy brush and for cutout filter and might redo the screws a little bigger.

I'll look into the detail map - my normal map worked out pretty perfect so far (though I painted it by hand)

    edit:

needs more visible strokes and the screws need to be redone imho :S

will post some flats and some more stuff as soon as there's first ingame stuff from this (intended to be 1000th post but I just screwed it :S)
