i don't see anything in their game so far that warants a megatexture.

all the stuff shown so far could be done with current techniques.

i don't mean that there isn't a place for trying new things, but i can't see how they can look at that and think that the quality is acceptable.

then again after looking at starcraft 2 maybe people are just giving up on furthering artistic techniques and figured it's time to return to cheap game making :S

  • Alien Swarm - New non-FPS Valve game out Monday!

yeah buff space marines killing aliens is so super original right? ;D

i think the whole "valve never made anything of their own" is a pretty strawman argument; sure they take IP from other people, but it's generally from people who are still passionate about games, students and modders and so on.they are not being slipped a buck to make some washed up money-hungry producers idea of what will sell this month.

and look at how much they change the games; portal was just a rough idea, valve added their expertise to it and look how it turned out. i really doubt if those students had tried to release it on their own, or had even got the help of someone like activision it would have turned out half as good as it did.

then there's TF2, everyone's favourite First Person Hat Acquisition Simulator; the idea was not their own, sure, but look at how different even TF1 is compared to TF2. Valve added not just an art style, but an art style that complimented gameplay. they pushed forward with huge free updates to keep the game going strong and draw in new people ($14 for 5 maps! HEY GUYS WANNA GARGLE SOME MORE OF KOTICKS SEMEN?!), they revamped the entire game and made decisions that other people were against but which turned out to be better for the game.

so while i will agree with you that they haven't made a new in-house IP for 10 years, i think it's unfair to say they haven't been orignal and innovative, supporting good ideas from other people with their manpower and experience.

although that swarm game looks pretty fucking rough and is it me or can i see a shitload of HL2 textures in there?

    also i agree, mapcore co-op pack ;D

    Heh, the first name was Annhas Adventure, and then we came up with Annhas Awesome Adventure; A triple A title. But only game devs would get the joke As to what tools were used;

I used Visual Studio and Unity. Also had maya installed to make it work with the assets. Warby used Maya and photoshop for the most part.

Damn, those licences must have been expensive!

no he's not, he sent me an email asking for information about crysis 2 a while back, i didn't respond because, well, NDA; and professional behaviour..

but it looks like he is trying to stir up some trouble!

I would love to say more about it but I think anything I say could be taken out of context or used inappropriately without the right amount of information, ya know. so I say nothing!

it's called mip mapping, when you look at something at such an angle it tends to blur a lot.

Actually, it's called texture filtering! (Bilinear, trilinear, anisotropic, etc)

MipMapping is what automatic downsizes the size of the texture as you walk farther away from it.

that's what filtering does, it calls the lower mip maps

I guess I'm the only one bothered by the ground/street textures. I'm bothered by the ground/street textures, they're like super blurry/low def.

Edit: Look especially at the two screenshots of robots shooting cars.

it's called mip mapping, when you look at something at such an angle it tends to blur a lot.
