all those living costs. and added stress etc.

damn i'm sure glad they put that part in the contract about greedy publishers and fuckwit incompetant producers and managers ruining studios and killing projects, and forcing passionate creatives to move city or country every 2 years until they are burnt out and bitter enough to move into management roles!

    faggots

I'm working on the map with the level flow of Competurn. I'll update my portfolio with it.Currently it is really crowded with arrows and the right place to shoot portals, all in one image.

I'm thinking to include in my portfolio a single image for each step to present the flow in a clearer way, and to include an extra image with all arrows together (to have a better sense of flow in the map).

---> What do you guys think? How do you guys generally do this?

-----> bonus question: do you think that this kind of thing is really necessary in a portfolio?

Personally, I'd have Photoshop open and toggle each layer with each step to explain the level for the team. But, this wouldn't be possible in a portfolio (right?)

(the white sketch on the center of the image is to remember myself to take an in-game screenshot and apply there to show an angle that the "top view" fails to show).

I did not finish it yet. I'll finish this diagram this night.

Here's a version with all the portals placed correctly: http://anselmo.gd/temp/img/WIP_competurn_levelflow.jpg

And this one below shows only the arrows:

I played a bit more yesterday and spotted another goof. They included the HK417, but it's only semi-auto instead of selective fire. The game version only has 10 rounds per clip, but the model looks to be displaying a 20 round clip..... Sorry I'm a military nut, so I notice these small things. Then again one could also spot goofs in a more popular title like Modern Warfare 2, why do the Russian solders in 'Wolverines' sporting the TAR-21 rifles? These aren't exported to Russia.

I'm sure AAA devs are very creative, etc. unfortunately you guys often aren't allowed to express it in your games. There are countless stories of bold new AAA stuff getting crushed by conservative publishers or skittish investors (e.g. The Crossing, LMNO) and I think that scares me shitless, the idea that I'd work for years on something then watch it get swept under the rug without even a whimper. Depression and anxiety are normal responses because it's a crappy situation. Also, I think that IGS soapbox rant was totally missing the point.

People rarely hate people; rather, people hate self-destructive institutions that hurt other people.

So when you get an industry that says you're a failure if your Metacritic is under 85 and you sell "only" a few million copies for $60 each and management decides to close your studio, that seems crazy. That seems like a horribly dysfunctional system that encourages conservative design choices and thinks of devs as resources to be optimized or discarded. (Soylent green is made out of people!)

Let me be clear: I think most indies like AAA devs, AAA techniques, and AAA studios -- but they hate the AAA industry that exploits the cultural capital of games, and they hate the idea that some random CEO gets to fire you AND determine how society perceives what all of us do.

Sure, you can be cynical and say "that's the nature of all industries" or "well I work at ___ and I have job security"... but I think that's a really unproductive attitude.

sweet! So are you guys creating a lot of new textures/models for this one too? Looks like there's a lot of new stuff going on there anyhow?

there's probably a 50/50 split between stock HL2 and new stuff. Most of the big, in your face, stuff is new, there isn't enough time or willpower to replace everything, and tbh HL2 content is still really great quality after all these years
