i like both quicksave/load and checkpoints in the same game. what about a game that "unlocks" quicksave/load once you beat the game using the checkpoint system lol?

I think where dishonored succeeds is that you cannot really "fail" because of something out of your control, and it;s easy to recover from a mistake, so you don't actually get punished by having to reload back to an earlier checkpoint because of some arbitrary decision by a level designer. so many subtle things like this were done right in the game. those guys.. very clever

What I was trying to say is that game worlds can either try to mimic real world settings and locations or they can be a bit more abstract and "gamey" (and anywhere inbetween of course). My opinion is that the world of Far Cry 3 leans a bit too much towards the latter, which breaks the illusion of being on a foreign, hostile tropical island (atleast for me). For example, animal locations are, like most things, clearly marked on the map and the animals themselves have a very limited geographical range. So when you go hunting, it's more of an MMO-style experience where you simply move to the marked area, quickly spray some animals with bullets and be on your way. You don't have to skulk around in a thick jungle, looking for your prey, watching the amount of sound you make etc.

This doesn't make the game bad, it's just a question of preference.

for sure. about the animals, i actually like that. once you get deeper into the crafting trees they start to use more rare animals, animals in places you haven't visited yet - so letting the player know that the area they are currently in doesn't have the right animals works out pretty well to encourage them to keep moving forward, and you get another reward when you pop a radio tower and can suddenly see "ah there's my next backpack!". as a mechanic i think it works out a lot better than something like deer hunter - considering the type of game it is, of course!

and they do this with everything, it's all marked out for you, and you can choose to explore, or buy a map and have things shown for you (you still have to reach them and locate the items you need, which is often harder than it seems). i like the fact that you have very clear goals, and they are communicated to you in a very clear way. it's obviously not the right choice for every game, but for this one i think they did it pretty well.

i have been running around with a bow, upgrading all my stealth skills, and it's quite like how you describe: skulking through trees, scouting out areas from a distance, etc. taking over rebel bases and suddenly having a safe area is a really nice feeling too, gives you a great sense of progression.

honestly, it's a great example of well-designed and intuitive mechanics. probably not for everyone, depending on what you expect going in. i suppose it helps that i was expecting another farce like Far Cry 2, and to get this was a pleasant surprise.

I've played maybe 1,5 hours or so. it's good but not great so far!

I feel like there's a bit too much clutter in the shape of randomquests/randompeople/randomenemies/randomanimals everywhere. Feels a bit too much like an overpopulated and gamey world if you ask me...

Crysis 1 actually gave you a better sense of place imho.

    but it's a game.

    ..wow, just wow.

    10/10

just played 4 1/2 hours straight, and don't feel like stopping. it's been a long time since i have been this captivated. better than far cry and crysis combined.

Is this even a problem in Europe, or is this solely the USA/UK? I can't say I've ever seen women treated badly at Crytek or DICE - or even in the UK really.

I personally have been guilty of thinking that maybe some women in the industry might not be as qualified as men but when I think about it I apply that same thought process to guys that aren't as qualified so it's quite an equal amount of contempt. Equality!

Check out the Kotaku comments; I know it's Kotaku, but how butthurt can some people get.

Are women actually expecting respect in an industry where they are NOT THE MAJORITY CONSUMER/PRODUCER. My goodness this is hilarious. Most women back then never cared for this industry and dismissed it in every way possible. Now that they see it's a money maker, they want their piece, but can't handle the fact that it's a male driven industry. So they complain about it because that's the only thing they know how to do properly and the know it will get them what they want while devaluing the product.

I hope you like feminism and PC groups forcing their ideas on the gaming industry even more now guys, because this is where it's headed.

Really? The ignorance is astonishing, and the leap to conclusions is evident of a pretty damaged mind.

at this point i'm in the library, and i'm so disappointed that this level is different that the one from last year trailer, and at some point changing clothes is pointless - like i was in a police uniform, and the guys in a chopper knew i'm not a police officer WTF? and again i the library gameplay - the same part, hitman walks on the roof like a boss, now this is impossible

yeah, i read a review somewhere that made a point of the whole disguises thing - it's not that bad right up until you realise you are just rolling around on the ground between conveniently placed cover. It sort of forces you to do exactly what the designers wanted you to do. At the point I am in the game I am starting to get a little tired of being forced to do certain things and I can't wait to start it on easy and just murder everybody relentlessly as a kind of impotent protest.

lmao i take it all back. played up until Hope now. this has some of the worst writing ever lol, possibly worse than the movie heh. every single woman is either a slut or a vunerable child/old crone. the enemies are laughably "unlikable" (whatever happened to subtlety). i love the guy who complains about having an erection as he dies, i bet someone's 10 year old son had a good chuckle over that.

it's not so much a hitman game as a kind of strange perversion of a hitman game. but really i could probably overlook a lot of the silly stuff if the writing and plot weren't so incredibly laughable.

    please don't make a sequel.

been playing this a little and it's quite enjoyable but the lack of quick-saving is a real problem, you can't experiment at all, and you end up doing the same boring stuff dozens of times trying to figure out the best way to approach something.

the costume/disguise stuff isn't a big deal and actually works pretty well in my opinion - the biggest issue is the instinct, it doesn't seem to work sometimes (when trying to blend in), and you end up in the 2spooky mode and suddenly everybody is hostile and the SWAT are on their way. but maybe i just need to practice a little bit more...

glacier 2 is an interesting engine, i have everything maxed out and it doesn't look OMG JAW DROPPING, but everything is quite high-res, and there's some nice attention to detail, but there's a few things like the lens flares that simply look ridiculous when you can't see 47's head because of the giant flares bouncing off his bald dome.

overall though it's enjoyable, nice to look at, feels very free and open without being completely ridiculous and confusing, the crowds are great, the visuals are actually AAA, the engine runs smoothly and there's no annoying bugs or awkward UI annoyances. It's very polished, very good. So far I've played a couple of hours and can't give it a "score" but it's definitely leaning towards a 90+

    Good work IO!

GW2 is an ugly game. Choppy, sluggish and dated animations (Age of Conan still holds the crown for animations and player movement all these years later). A confusing and unintuitive quest system. Slow and unremarkable combat, with very little AoE so it turns into a single-target slug-fest. Convoluted quest rewards and no real sense of progression over the small scale areas - the very typical "collect 5 ape tumors", and no hint of the larger world-changing events that were so hyped.

The trailers and promotional screenshots made the game look much better than it actually is, and no amount of free-to-play can overcome that.
