  • Games with lasting emotional impact

some stuff does this for me

psychonauts the first and second metal gear solid or ico and sotc for example did

and other stuff doesn't even though on the surface it looks like it would ( braid brütal legend limbo mgs 3 +4 ) ( still great games mind you ! )

so i haven't found a formular to determin if a game will do this or not

but i am actually exclusively seeking out those games that do have that strong emotional impact on me

and i am rather turned off when games dont end up delivering on that front

Not sure how low budget it needs to be but Fire In the Sky is a pretty cool filmhttp://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FEHP7JGego

i just re reread the thread after mino praised it for its excellence and i am shocked i hadn't commented on this yet:

fire in the sky is just about the scariest thing i have ever seen in my life !

hardly anythign has disturbed/fascinated me like that scene right there when i was a kid ! ( there are alot of scenes on xfiles that are kind of like it ... but not quit as disturbing)

somehow despite the common knowledge that its scarier if you dont see it

this scene in particular works and gets THAT much more scarier because it does not obscure the aliens this scene is TOTALLY in your face and thats whats so scary

recently i heared somebody talk about this ( dont remember where) and the claim was that this movie is so unknown because it was a hugh flop at the boxoffice because it launched the same day as jurassic park. not sure if there is anything to this i mean if it was more popular if it hadn't launched against one of the greatest films of the 90s ...

    anyway ... LOVE !

Leviathan (1989) - I really enjoyed this one. It has a great cast of actors set designs and the environments are amazing. The creature in the movie reminds me a bit of the alien from 'The Thing'.DeepStar Six (1989) - This is another underwater sci/fi thriller similar to Leviathan but not half as good. It also has really cool set design and environments.

huh both those movies are from the same year as the abyss ? so strange how holy wood makes the same movies in parallel all the time ... i would have figured these 2 were directly derivative of the abyss if i hadnt checked the release dates ...

Found it! I'm not sure if its the same movie your are thinking of, but I know that these robotic/aliens use humans as spare parts.

    MoonTrap (1989)

Space Truckers, Cheesy but still a favorite of mine. The Last Star Fighter

Videodrome - Very weird movie and great gore, but has, from what I can remember, a lot of weird creative stuff. I need to watch this one again.

Explorers - ood family film. really good up until the end, then its gets super gay.

    Screamers

There are a bunch more I cannot find atm.

One I am looking for in particular is similar to the movie Virus(1998) in the way that the aliens use mechanical items and human body parts to construct themselves, but after an attack on earth (in some corridor thing) they go to the moon and discover old ruins and what not, forget the rest. It was a cool sci-fi movie though. If anyone may know the name, please let me know.

space trukers yeah cheese as hell but i liked it !

last star fighter havent seen yet

videodrome fuck yeah a personal favorite of mine ! cronenbegr at his peak !

    explorers:never heard of it

screamers: was supper hyped but too young when it was at the cinema watched it on tv much later and was fairly dissappointed

please find out what that last movie you mentioned is i remember a movie from my childhood with some machines that grafts stuff on it self and kept on growing and growing and i cant find out what that movie was D: your description sounds similar !

Biggest difference was that we didn't had any tools for terrain since we used model sets even for that.

which is the way to go if you ask me ! much finer control and you dont have to learn/apply 2 separate works flows at the same time to build you levels

    terrains = 90s

    okay i just saw this:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1470827/

at the fantasy film festival here in hamburg ( that they seem to have bi annual now )

and i LOVED it the director was present and gave a small qa after wards which made the whole experience even more enjoyable/exciting i must admit ! for the first time ever i felt that the clapping at the end of a good movie ment something

i am not gonna say anything about the plot i think the less you know about the movie the better lets just say its not what you would expect ! (dont go an expect an action movie)

i had a quick chat with the director after the movie and squeezed out of him that he used 3d studio max and did all of the fx shots himself * i was super stunned when he said that* he dodged the question about the budget in the qa but its rumored that its roughly 15k pounds !

highly recommended i you like one or more of these films:

    el mariaci

    the abyss

    jurassic park

    primer

    jarhead

    district 9

    stalker

    cloverfield

war of the worlds ( the spielberg one ! ... this movie does what spielberg version attempted and failed at ! )

    go see it !

i dont know why but those 2 rows of guys with 1 heart ny t-shirts who stare completely motionless at their screens and play totally creeps me out its like this is some dystopian 1984 future society where as a morning ritual you have to play a session of crysis mp or be killed !

hilarious and disturbing at the same time

gameplay looks very call of duty modernwarfare ish so ... me likes ! ... a lot !
