  • Normal maps in Source overlays?

    • Furyo
    • April 7, 2007 at 11:18 PM

    There, I moved it

No, I just wanted to come up with a bootprint overlay. A simple normal map that would be displayed on top of whatever ground you want to use.

I tried to use a blank basetexture in case one was needed, but the normal map remains black

I'm trying to find out if I can use a simple normal map as an overlay, with no basetexture, and if yes what type of shader I should be using.

I've tried all the logical ones I could think of, and the normal map appears either white or black in game

    Oh you and your connections

Was this already in beta stage last year? It could mean development has stopped?

Amazing results, saves enormous amounts of time. You can load up any diffuse texture, pic, etc and get a great normal map in just a few clicks.

The program is beta for now, may have to be purchased in the future, but it's free right now

That could be extremely cool in a game that would put it to real use. Including on the Wii

The lighting could be improved, and that would be a first important step towards making the map better. Add contrast

Well I'll be the first to say I didn't quite like the game so far. Only played the beginning of it all (first 3 missions) and there is a massive sense of confusion as you start the game, I also think the HUD interface is too complicated for my own taste, and yes the first guns are absolutely terrible (and they look like complete crap too)

I'm not entirely sold on the artistic design so far, the massive outdoor environments sure are a nice promise, but again the visual appeal isn't as good for me.

As you start the game it really is promising though, as you interact with the dealer, it all looks good, and as you go outside, I was equally disappointed by the animals animations.

I need to get some more time on this game, and my view of it will probably change

Yesterday evening in Paris, Sony had booked a boat near the Eiffel Tower. They expected a lot of people, but only 20 peeps showed up And as they started their run down the Seine river, another boat pulled up with a huge "Xbox 360 loves you" sign

    Way to go Microsoft hehe

I'd have to say it would be extremely cool as a HL1 map. However it doesn't quite give justice to the Source engine as it is today.

I can't dismiss the map altogether at all either. You've managed to make me feel "wow this is cool" and "bleh that could be so much better" at the same time, something no other dods map has ever done.

That's quite an amazing tool. The major plus is that you don't need any programmers/engineers to develop your engine/features, it's extremely easy to set up (albeit you need to have some knowledge of 3D engines in general) and you can produce some great scenes in a handful of hours.

Download some of the demos (they hold a yearly contest). I'm sure you'll be surprised by the results.
