  • So...how do you go about getting a job.

Just a quick comment. In the same way there are many more 3D artists than there are Level designers, there are many more level designers than there are systems designers.

I'm working on a title at Sony at present and we have been trying to recruit decent systems designers for nigh on 9 months now with little success. Virtually every designer's CV that comes through is LD. Almost no-one classifies themselves as systems and has experience to back it up. If you can get some skills and experience in this role you are rare as rocking horse sh*t and not likely to have any problems finding a job.

Possibly add in some potted plants or trees, al-la Philip K's Morningstar rework.

Plenty of space in there for some tall organics.

edit: btw, the gras/trees do look like an area from guildwars (pre-searing ascalon)

Regent Valley I think? Shame the Source engine won't let you do the kind of dynamic falling leaves thingy that GW allows.

Hessi has a good point. All the most successful maps have a strong and unique theme.

Whether this theme is realistic or not is kinda unimportant, it can work either way. de_corse for example, is a highly realistic map in a real world setting, whereas something like awp_monopoly or de_star are far from real world, but still have very strong themes of their own.

Try to develop an identity for your map, and then try to apply this as you lay down the brushwork, people will identify with, and as such enjoy your map more when they can pick up on exactly what it is at a first glance.

A year after starting it, and a 5 month break since beta, I am finally in the process of getting de_static sorted for a final release, adding in some custom models n stoof, and generally fixing up the gameplay a little. Hopefully I'll have a release candidate out in the next month or so.

Some WIP piccies below with a bunch of new stuff in em, tweaked lighting and a tad more polish than the beta. Layout remains predominantly the same.

As far as design goes, the map could stand a lot more detail, lighting, a skybox and thought towards the texturing.

Check out some of the maps in the spotlight gallery for inspiration.

Nice enough map, but not was I was expecting to see considering the amount of time spent on it and Mike's reputation.

If the class is level design then I should imagine the layout will be more important than the look.

How about posting up an overview of the routes?

Bet M$ are laughing their asses off at us right now.
