Changed the thread title so it's shorter. I've also edited the site a little bit to reduce the load times the previous had. I also removed the textures I had on that page because I don't have any finished works yetm don't like to have unfinished stuff on those pages just yet.

Made the lighting on the model a bit more smoother.

I'm still getting used to everything, I'll look into it though.

Just made my lamp and imported it into HL2, mind the test map. Currently getting a better screen however.

    Edit; Done

I have to agree with the news as Hourences says. Another thing I can pick out is the orange links on the banner, they seem to blur too much with that colour, lacks a contrast for those to stick out since that's where you want to direct people to, those pages. Possibly too small as well.

I always find that portfolio's that have a few example screenshots of what you have on your site on the front page can be a nice introduction what to expect. You could replace the news page with that and a little introduction.

The biggest problem is the amount of available work. Forget your skill, personality and expectations. They are all useless if there isnt any work available in the first place. This is not the easiest career move you can pick.

Shouldn't be too much of a problem, I'm not aiming it to be my main job however. If I get into the place Im looking into getting then I'll get 4½ hours a night of work, hopefully. This will leave the mornings free, if I decide not to go back to my last year of school (yr13) and it depends when I feel ready to take this move - again with what you said as well. I will give a look around though anyway to see what IS available, but it'll be nice to spend all that free time doing nothing to earn a bit more cash here and there I guess.

All in all, I think the threadstarter should be more concerned whether or not he can actually pull this off than whether or not he will like it. This is just really hard to pull off, except if you get into tiny tiny projects, so I dont give you a huge chance on succeeding anyhow...

I guess the best way to know this is (after some practice and improvement) to set a mini project/task (be it a map/modelling) and a deadline and try to see how well I can stick to it? (or even get the task set by someone else) It'll get me into the process of getting a task, completing it on time etc etc.

I'm just not interested in onsite work, not too bothered about meeting new people either. I don't socialize and I choose not to anyway. Wether or not I can pull it off is beyond me right now - and only then I'll decide if I wish to do so or not (and depending on the quality of work)

    Edit: Contests even!

Hey guys, I'm a rather depressing guy, who sits at home a majority of my time and isn't very social! So those comments are quite meaningless to me ha! But some good posts.

-You need to be a really fast worker, time is money.

That can sometimes fit me, if there's a solid plan and concept to follow and if I work on it as long as I can I could probably get it done quite quickly and possibly with a decent quality - therefore spending a that little extra time improving upon it. Unfortunetly I can be easily distracted with the internet/anime or easily unmotivated.

you dont need a job (remote or on-site) to improve your skills though. if you have a desire to do so you should just go ahead, paid or not, and improve as much as you can.

    True true.

BUT its hard to pull off, its highly insecure, theres little work available and you indeed do gain less experience of it. You will always be the guy who gets a task and have to complete it. You can never become the lead and be the one whos in control. That can be frustrating.

Deffinitely something I could find fustrating too, I'm always a person who likes to take the lead with things and do things my way, guess this'll be troublesome.

Reading through Hourences portfolio again recently and noticed he takes on remote off site work? That is pretty much doing the work without physically being in that studio for whatever task given right? Does anyone else around here also do that or am I mistaken about it? Otherwise, I'm pretty interested to know more about it, how the process works, sending off the work etc. I'm not really interested in physically working in the game industry in one set studio, but doing odd jobs does - that is ofcourse after I gain a lot more experience and improve since the stuff I have isn't exactly anywhere near game dev quality.

I'd be willing to go full speed ahead and learn as much as I can on the engine side of things, improve my modelling and graphic editing. But I'm still unsure and that's why I've opened this topic... to get more information about it if any.

You want to make sprites, in photoshop, using a solid colour that emulates as transparency while keeping the edges crisp and pixelly?

Index colour mode perhaps? (Image>Mode>Index Colour...) I've recently been told about it which is pretty useful (although I just stick to paint for that stuff)

I've been working on this simple website for the past few weeks and it's now uploaded. Still got a bit more content to add but the majority of it is there, it works quite like a portfolio and hopefully I can get other engine works on there sometime in the future. I mostly made this for reference but made it look nice incase people happen to visit it every now and then. Comments or suggestions could be nice but I quite like the design I have though.

There's something about family murders that gets to me, probably because you can relate to it so easily.

So true, but for me it's mostly on the side of hearing very young girls (3 or 4 years) being abducted/murdered that gets to me most because having a niece around that age. It's not nice to think about it.

I'm sure I've heard this story before, if I'm not mistaken my little sister brought it up at some point saying the girl and guy had profiles on "vampirefreaks" - I'm sure it's the same story, sick though.

Sucks. <3 I think it could be a nice short singleplayer map actually. Simple objectives and some balanced enemy fights after each completed objective.
