  • 3.93 GByte photos of France [torrent] [RE-SEED]

    • hessi
    • February 25, 2007 at 1:43 PM

    hey,

i think you all know that i am making a lot of photos at all places i come to. for example i used a couple of photos for my biggest map de_corse.

because i can't use all of my photos in a project, i am releasing the "france"-part of my 18.8GByte collection. if seeding and sharing works fine i would probably release more photos such as my "freiburg" or "plants" parts.

please take the following in mind while downloading and using my photos:

1.All photos you downloaded are not for commercial usage!

    2. If you want to use any of these photos for a commercial project contact me via email and we can discuss things out. ([email protected])

    3. If you want to use any of these photos in a free uncommercial project then you can do it. This includes game mods that are not reselled as retail version or don't make profit in any other way.

    4. Nobody is allowed to redistribute these photos in any other way (new torrent/dvd/download or any other way of distribution).

    5. Though if you want to copy it onto any other computer to save download time you should include this readme file!

If you have any questions about the legal terms write me an email ([email protected])

to show you a few samples of what you can expect from this big download i uploaded a few photos to my website:

Most of the photos are RAW files. You need at last ACDSee 8 (maybe 7 too) or Photoshop CS 1 or any other program supporting the Canon EOS 300D Raw format.

Because i am seeding with my private bandwidth i can't seed with more than 100kbyte/s so i would be happy if you could spend some of your bandwidth even after you finished downloading. i will try to keep this tracker up running as long as possible. there might be a few interruptions but as long as you are connected to my seeding computer the tracker shouldn't matter. decentralized tracking is activated!

Now enjoy this collection of photos.

I have 350D and I'm not satisfied with lens. If you want to make realy nice pictures buy a new lens

that's a thing you have to buy with ANY DSLR.

i got the 300D and still happy with it. the battery is not that healthy anymore after 3 years, but quality is awesome. i'd say: 300 for a cheap used DSLR from canon (the 350D or 300D) + new battery + 90-300mm lense. that would make like 500Euro don't know what that will be in punds but i think you could do a pretty good deal with that.

take a look at those images: replace the 300$ in the first with 100 or 200$ and in second image the 600$ would be equal to a brand new DSLR like the EOS 400D without a lense.

the roofs in the bottom of the image are too saturaded. make them more grey/green

actually no, but if your screenshots are so heavily WIP then why do you post them?

first screenshot looks promising. the second one is too blocky, boring texture, monotone lighting etc.

i hope you take your time to finish this map. de_museum was an awesome map back in the old days

  • Ok, so what's your opinion on this?

    this discussion is ridicilous

have to agree with friechamp somehow.

maybe i should clear out some things:

    - germans have to learn english in school

    - there are still some mid-age / older people that cant speak english because they just didnt learn at school and where in no situation where they would ever use it

    - not every german uses his english skills so frequently as we do at mapcore, so dont be surprised if someone is kind of surprised if you talk english to him/her

    - localized movies are a common thing and i am glad that we have this. i would not have been able to understand all those kids/teen movies i watched with a crappy school english (yes i had really bad grades in english)

    - germans are not nazis we pretty much all learned our lesson.

you listed a few of the things i noticed too. the tree shadow displacement thing shouldnt be hard to fix: instead of overlapping displacements better use 1 displacement with mutliple overlays. you can edit the renderorder, that everything fits.

of course there is an ugly spot in every map, but you made it pretty easy. just spawn as an allied and there is blocky brushwork all around. okay you said you know that this isnt perfect, but then allow me to criticize it.

concerning the mill part: there is one rule that can be applied on any game: don't create any detail with textures/props that aren't made especially this.

and why should this map stay below 20MB?

    greetings

seems like i have to be the bitch saying that he does not like the map (besides the idea is very original and super!)

dude, your stairs are fucking ugly. i mean: dont't you see they look really weird? i feel kind of reset to my first week of mapping 7 years ago.

those metal stairs are really ugly too. the textures arent aligned and just don't look right.

this motor thing you took from the dod_kalt bakery doesnt fit there. it hangs in the air and i am asking my self how this whole thing should work. you might say players wont recognize, but in fact they are because i am a player too.

the last screenshot speaks for its self. no detail at all. some missmatching textures. no 3D in the rock wall. no connectivity between wall, ground and top.

some last big point: your lighting isn't making this scenery cold. all over warm colors but the scenery is covered with snow. better use blue and cold colors.

    [Blocked Image: http://thomashess.net/edelhaft.jpg]

to come to an end: it's not that i dont like the idea. i just dislike how you tried to realise it. looks cheap and thrown together. give this map 4 months of hard work and make it pretty! i'd like to play it, but not like this.

take this image as a reference how i'd prefer the lighting

  • Get a degree or not ?

    • hessi
    • February 8, 2007 at 9:33 PM

i agree with you mino. university is a good addition to your own personal interests and skills. a degree wont make you a good artist/technician or anything other.

no company will hire you because you have a degree. they might hire you because you are good (due to your experience and maybe some knowledge you got at university) and maybe because the degree shows them that you are a smart ass that has learned how to bite through hard theory

though i can talk of my experiences with the industry: there are a lot of people who have a degree and there are as many who got there only because of their skills and have no bachelor or master or diploma at all. so its pretty much a decision you make for your own personal interest. but as long as it is cheap and educational nobody should miss the fun of being a student at a university.

oh and while studying you can improve your skills and get a higher market value

  • 3d Studio vs Maya (for game development)

I don't know, maya has a lot of pro's for games too. A lot of studios utilize melscript to integrate maya into their pipeline. I would say out of all the studios I have seen / interviewed / seen job postings for, it's been about a 50/50 split between max and maya.

i can agree with that. tough it wont cost that much time to switch from one application to another because the users already know what they want and often it is only hidden in some other context menu

    • February 7, 2007 at 10:17 PM

harefort: i hope this will be your last "skin" because it's not a skin, it's a texture! The skin is polygonmesh binded to a skeleton and not a texture or any other 2d image.

though your texture looks nice and well done for a first try. How about texturing something more complex now? like a car such as KIIIA is doing

    kiiia:

the backwheel is getting crappy reflections. try to get a better environmentmap. maybe increase the reflectivity by 300% and why did you take a side view? please post some more dynamic perspective views i still can remember that i showed you some tricks (play with focal length etc.)

how about 4D Studio Maya? It would combine Cinema4D (is easily warezd, because 4D sounds cooler than 3D), 3D Studio Max (because a lot of people know Studio Max) and Maya (because it has a cool UI and is a high quality software. We only need to put XSI somewhere in this name construct don't take this post too serious. just wanted to resume some "facts"

this discussion has been there for like 10000 times. so i will just give a small advice:

try max and maya. make a single prop in bother 3d packages and then export them. check out which one was the easiest or less complex tool. though a little knowledge of the things beyond Max or Maya or XSI doesnt hurt.

i always thought of making a video tutorial instruction to maya for people who already know basics of 3d modelling. so i wouldnt concentrate on what an uv map is. i would more show things you might miss/search in maya like "how can i quickly extrude a polygon". By that everybody who would be watching the tutorial should already know what extrude means. would there be interest in such a tutorial? i could maybe start tonight and finish it tomorrow.

    greetings
