while working in the cellar i found an old untouched model kit + all of my old painting colors (2 boxes full). the prices were still in good ol' Deutsch Mark

i will post my work in progress in this thread. this kind of making models is so cool. much fast than maya and max

maybe i will make the same model in maya after this because then i have perfect 3d reference in front of me.

    enjoy!

    1. get a legal copy of maya ple / gmax / xsi mod tool / blender

    2. just start with a simple lowpoly object (for example a bottle of beer)

    3. texture this object

    4. export it to a game you want to mod

    5. try more complex models

serious: there is no way you must go. there are lots of ways you can choose. best one would be to just get a 3d software and try. search for tutorials on the net. there are dozens around. in the 2d art forum we have a collection of texturing tutorials. maybe those will help.

i for my self have a couple of tutorials on http://www.thomashess.net where i would recommend all tree tutorials (several videos + resources for practicing)

  • Normal maps in Source overlays?

    • hessi
    • April 7, 2007 at 11:05 PM

    belongs to engine discussion!

though there is no way i know to do this with an overlay. if you have a simple structure where you want to put this normal mapped material, then add a brush above it with 1 unit height difference. otherwise if you wanted a normalmap overlay onto a displacement or so, i got no freakin' idea

i played it today. graphics and gameplay seem fine. i give a 9 of 10 because the setting is pretty much overused.

you are using those tree's you found at mapping-tutorials.de ? those where i gave lots of critic due to technical/artistic problems?!

the bridge in your current wip area would need a better texturing. define contours with trim textures and add some fine details such as statues/plastics into the bridge. add some vertical lamp holder or something (like in dod_colmar)

the lower roof in the second picture has to be redone. looks too bumpy and unstructured in that place.

rest looks good. maybe you could need some different trees. those you have there are not fitting 100% into the lighting/setting. too green leaves for fall (the time period of a year), but this can be fixed later.

When I tried to extract the map from the rar, I kept getting a file corruption message. Has anyone been able to play it?

indeed. he didnt upload the complete file. man i hate to be such rude, but this is really noob-style to release a map that no one can extract. i hope you better try out for your self next time. though a release of 2,7Mbyte with 3kbyte/s isnt very satisfying.

where does he say it is a dod map? in any way: this lighting looks awesome. can't wait to see this piece finished

looks a lot like de_train (while watching the screenshots). don't know what to say. it's definitly a solid work, but it heavily lacks of originality.

i would give it a 6 out of 10 points. technically it seems okay but i miss new stuff.

    Amen.

    I agree!

of course the more work you have today has to be spreaded onto a team, but cutting the workflow into too many pieces might and will be counterproductive.

though i think everybody who has played a game and has basic experience in level creation, can design a layout/gameplay for a game level. :X

    well, for the 1001st time:

a unit is a unit. 3d geometry is saved only as an integer/float value. there is no cm, mm, inch, foot or anything else.

result: 1 unit in blender equals 1 unit in hammer/ued/bf2/any-other-game

a player is like 80 units high (eye position around 72)

who ever told this was a stupid loser. of course you can work with blender and export to the source engine. maybe milkshape has to be set inbetween the exporting pipeline. didnt work with blender for a while.
