The church relies a little bit too much on texture though

what do people expect? that we build a church like that with a single 128x128 wall texture? IMO the church texturing is still too repetitive, but since it is such a big model it is nearly impossible to do better.

thanks to the nice comments from those who gave nice comments. i agree with the fact that the destruction could be a bit more realistic, but since you all worked with hammer editor once i think you all know what a pain in the ass displacements can be! though warby and i wanted to focus on graphics and gameplay so if there are some flaws in the graphics the gameplay mostly profits in a different way. the main street is already really busy. its hard to determine a sniper in the allied spawn from the far end. so adding more detail would only make it much harder and probably people would be annoyed by physics meshes blocking their bullets in "transparent" areas. so I once again thank you all and probably we will all soon play this piece

well there is no download link yet since the map is being reviewd by a couple of people. probably this might get into a mappack or update or what ever so i'd recommend to stay tuned but since we got your attention this is already half the battle

ok everybody! hessi is back on track and i am thrilled to post my 1000th post in this awesome community!

in may 2006 warby and i started a little something. since this autumn we finished this piece of hard work. until christmas i will post some more screenshots to not waste all of our fireworks at one time.

take this small picture as a teaser!

    [Blocked Image: http://www.thomashess.net/coming_soon.jpg]

more is about to come soon!

    Update1:

as you might have noticed there is a brewery in the level. the brewery is one of the main hot spots. in the brewery is a flag that can be caputred only by at least 2 players. the consequence is that the brewery is really important for each team to win the map. there are 2 levels in the brewery so defending is a little bit easier than capturing. the use of grenades can eliminate campers from the 2nd level.

    [Blocked Image: http://www.thomashess.net/the_brewery.jpg]

    [Blocked Image: http://www.thomashess.net/the_brewery2.jpg]

    Update2:

the axis forces start on / near a destroyed bridge. they had been left in the city to defend it againt the allied approach. the spawn area is spawn camp protected. the bridge is a model that was made by warby. the area around the bridge is made of small models in a 3d skybox.

    [Blocked Image: http://www.thomashess.net/the_bridge.jpg]

    [Blocked Image: http://www.thomashess.net/the_bridge2.jpg]

    [Blocked Image: http://www.thomashess.net/the_bridge3.jpg]

    [Blocked Image: http://www.thomashess.net/the_bridge4.jpg]

    Update3:

this area is the second hot spot (compared to the brewery): the main street flag can be captured by at least 2 players. snipers and MGs have good places to defend or attack this area. for those players using automatic weapons like STG44 or Thompson we included ways onto the mainstreet from the buildings on the left. rushing out of the broken walls and quickly searching/taking cover allow those classes to capture the main street even if there is a sniper or MG.

    [Blocked Image: http://thomashess.net/the_mainstreet2.jpg]

    [Blocked Image: http://thomashess.net/the_mainstreet.jpg]

    Update4:

The name of the level hasn't been mentioned yet so let these screenshots denote it: dod_kolsch! Kolsch comes from Cologne's local brew called "Kölsch". The name dod_koln wouldn't be appreciated since people might expect the old koln level for the classic dod. The cathedral has become famous for being one of the only buildings that did survive the heavy bombings of the 4th biggest city of germany. So it was important for us to put something into the level that will make people remember it. The cathedral should be bigger to match its actual size in real world, but since this would screw the layout of the map we scaled it to ~70%.

This will round up my 1000th post and I wish all of you a merry christmas and hopefully we can all enjoy this fine piece on a DOD:S server

this is my 999th post which means this is my last post before i reveal the secret project with this account!

well the case is quite big inside. i think the photos speak for them selves. there is only one thing that keeps bugging me: there is no way to mount an IDE hard drive and a IDE DVD drive at the same time! the SATA drives go rotated by 90 degrees under the floppy drive slots. if you got a single IDE port on your mainboard and got an average IDE cable, you wont be able to plug the IDE cable to the DVD drive while also plugging it to the harddrive. there is no way to mount the 3.5 HDD in the 5.25 slots. ATM i have a 500GB Sata drive and a 300GB IDE drive. the IDE drive is now placed without any screws above the DVD drive. so moving around the case enforces being patient.

on the other hand there is a lot of cool stuff: i got 2 USB ports, headphone and microphone slots and a FW 400 port on top of the case. there are 2 case fans built in. one with LED lights which kind of pisses me off the sides open really smooth and you dont need any screwdrivers. you can mount all drives without screws. they got a nice system that works without!

i think i paid like 60-70 euro for the case.

the computer is running well but Vista is fucking bullshit. i have never seen such a piece of crap before. i cant even watch TV under vista because there are no BDA drives. so i had to set up a virtual PC in vista and run a cracked version of windows XP 32bit to use the old drivers. though the device is still plugged to windows vista and gets only forwarded to the virtual machine! ridicilous. yesterday all of a sudden my microphone didnt work. hard disk is active like 50% of the time in idle mode! serious: avoid vista as long as possible!

    Intel Core 2 Quad 6600

    4x 1GB G.Skill DDR2 800

500 GB Samsung SATA drive with 7200RPM

BENQ DVD burner (my older one) 16x speed

Floppy drive (yeah! need this for backup tools or retards who still live in 1995)

    Asus P5K-E Wifi AP

    Zalman CPU Cooler

    Chieftec 600W power supply

    Coolermaster computer case

well that's what i can reconstruct from my mind

actually i only paid the RAM and the CPU cooler. so it was like 200 euro to me the rest was paid by a company i once worked for

i am running Vista 64 buisness so the 4GB RAM pay off.

in idle mode CPU temperature is around: 38 °C

while playing DOD:S with 160 fps cpu is at 46°C

btw: running DOD:S brings 3 cores under pressure. the 4th is semi active. cant wait to get the episode2 engine update. then the 4 cores might be all fuelled

this is my 998th post. i got to wait with the 1000th post. maybe i should register another account to not cross the border too early

wheels are pretty much the most important thing on a vehicle. a "high res" texture should give the correct amount of detail while the body and chassis stay a bit more low res.

    • September 4, 2007 at 11:24 PM

the object to model is a kart racer with a character on it (dont mind ripping of existing characters like mario or crash bandicoot).

    specs:

    512 polies

1x256 texture for the body and character (that means both use the same texture) and 1x64 for the wheels

all textures can use alphatesting/blending but NO normalmapping or specularmasks

this contest shall end on 7th October.

here are some pictures as inspiration:

btw. 512 is kinda low if a character is in the mix.

thats the challenge. though many old classics used such low specs.

if we got some people joining this contest i would declare following rules:

    512 polies

1x256 texture for the body and character (that means both use the same texture) and 1x64 for the wheels

all textures can use alphatesting/blending but NO normalmapping or specularmasks

the object to model is a kart racer with a character on it (dont mind ripping of existing characters like mario or crash bandicoot).

this contest shall end on 7th October.

all participants should post into the mini contest submissions thread (WIP material is appreciated!)

    Default texturesize is indeed 128 x 128.

BS! for a 128 unit wall you use a 512px texture. so the texturescaling is 0.25

models might be different but world geometry usually uses a 0.25 scaling for the textures.

model should be less ≤512 polies and a 256x256 texture for the car and an additional 64x64 for the wheels maybe. no normalmapping or other stuff. a simple color map for each model. the karts might include a character (if you rip some game of that wouldnt be a problem in my eyes )

    critics? comments?
