thanks for clearing things out hourences. you exactly captured my point. of course small studios might fail even quicker and harder, but that's what i would usually expect to happen at some time.

  • Good luck Arttu :D

mh sad to hear that you didn't get your foot really in there. thinking about it, it might turn into a big disappointment when you finally get there and after a few months it turns out to be a crap hole. conclusion: never try to join one of the "big glorious companies" at all costs. better you get some experience and advance in smaller steps and maybe become the lead of a different project/company.

and tbh: valve sure gets so many CVs and portfolios a day, they can pick out the raisins.

    just my 2 cents

as i am finishing my bachelor degree right now, i can only tell you, that this is a good decision. being at university teaches you a lot. you need to organize your self, force your self to do much stronger research, impress people that know much better than the usual internet guy and the list goes on. imo studying is something that trains you mentally for your life and gives you a wide overview about a certain science discipline.

have fun with being a student!

  • How You Got Into The Industry

    • hessi
    • July 20, 2008 at 4:57 PM

    short version:

    1. being a school student with lots of spare time. making first experience in content creation for games

    2. stoping starting projects that never get finished. always finish what you started. no matter what.

    3. starting posting in forums. getting skills that others already had.

    4. having 9 months of social service (no more school. just stupid ass work with low pay) and even more spare time to focus on a portfolio.

    5. spitting the portfolio to every game developer in my country and requesting an internship.

    6. getting like 70% positive feedback (30% were no feedback at all). 6 out of 20 companies inveted me. each one wanted me for the internship (or even more. *hint to friedrich*)

    7. doing the internship for like 4-5 months

    8. starting university

    9. keep on working on sideprojects in the remaining spare time

    10. recieving multiple job offers from internet forums

    11. extending the portfolio slower and slower but with more quality work

    12. finishing the degree.

    13. gaining work experience as ... well i dont know what i am officially called. i would describe my tasks as follows: leveldesign, teacher for 2d and 3d for the junior artists, technical artist, content creation.

well actually getting into the industry is pretty easy. you get to know people if you are active in forums. there is always someone around who might help.

wasnt there this direct current voltage in the US and ac voltage in Europe? :S or was it the frequency of ac voltage? i should have been listening closer in those physics lessons back in school...

anyway: it can't be unified, since the systems are different. on the other hand there exist traveler converters, that don't take up much room.

serious: game industry isn't the best place for having a family. regarding those people i know most of them changed the company at least each 3rd year. good luck relocating with a wife and children. one reason for me not to be in this industry tbh.

I wouldn't say that's true... it really depends on the company. A lot of companies are still actively searching people who can do more than just one thing.

especially when it comes to small companies and tight production times. if i werent busy with my degree i would probably write code too besides the regular level design, modeling, texturing work

Not having time or being able to work on personal stuff in your spare time might be a factor. But yeah since it's a specialised job you would assume that most of the guys doing it would have come from working on games in their spare time and would be hanging around the modding communities but it doesn't seem to be that way.

tbh: no single person in the company where i work has ever been part of the modding community. thats a ratio of 12:1

and i can understand why these people dont want to be a part of an online community: most of these suck ass. too many dumb asses that bitch around. hence a forum might be wasted time and effort.

since i am awaiting a pen display, i though it would be wise to get back to drawing. hence i took a closer look at one (the most) famous games out there and check out how they did.[Blocked Image: http://thomashess.net/copied_painting.jpg]

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but which game is that from? Reminds me of an older, LucasArts-esque game.

indeed that's a small fragment of a monkey island 3 scene. i so love this game. best 2d artwork ever seen.
