I have to disagree with people that Crysis is the best looking game ever, Uncharted 2 easily beats it for it's massive attention to detail and huge variation in design.

My single gripe: too short. Otherwise, an amazing game, imo.If you're looking for something to WOW the fuck out of you, I'd recommend K&L2. It's the first game I've ever played where I feel as though the developers actually captured the setting of a real city, and the fact they chose Shanghai just makes it even better. It makes NYC look fucking gay, and makes Liberty City look like a damned cartoon. Top that with the 'surveillance cam' filter, and it absolutely nullifies any gripe you may have had about some obscure bit of graphics. I think it could be the reason the game is so pleasing to the eye altogether. Definitely the single most intense thing I've played to date.

Fantastic work, looks very much like System Shock 2 type environment, is that what you were going for? Either way, it looks awesome.

At least they don't have blocky shadows. I've had it up to here with that shit. I was playing Silent Hill 5 today and took this screenshot:

And that's at max settings on PC! [Blocked Image: https://migrationtest.mapcore.org/public/style_emoticons/default/mapcore_smilies/emot_shakehead.gif] Abysmal. Completely unforgivable.

SH5's PC port is abysmal full stop.

Anyway, aren't megatextures only for things like terrain such as rocks and ground etc rather than actual detailed graffitied concrete? I can't see how you can randomly generate street art like that.

It was originally designed for the PS2, and it shows in a lot of the areas. It gets a lot better towards the end. The second one on the other hand, is fucking gorgeous.

I didn't know it was supposed to be a PS2 game first, definately explains some things lol. It's definately got better, really got into it now, kinda shows what one of the combine cities would look like in England...

I've got Resistance 2 as well but I'll delaying that playthrough until I've beat Uncharted 2

We haven't had a NP thread this year, so once again it's time for me to open a new one!

Currently playing Resistance: Fall Of Man. First and foremost, this game has the best glass effects I've seen! The way it breaks, the cracks that appear on the surfaces of windows.. it looks realistic! The game itself is pretty run of the mill so far, run and gun, occasionally fighting bosses and pressing the odd button to open a gate, kinda overrated compared to reviews imho. Graphically it's pretty mixed, as a PS3 launch title it's dated a little, some horrible textures and everything either looks grey, green or blue.. which makes the game almost depressing to play at times, but there's a lot of care put into it and some of the detail is insane. Some fucking awesome weapons in there to play with, especially like the Auger and Hedgehog mines!

The campaign set in Nottingham (my hometown) is fucking lol, especially the bridge at the beginning... there is so such thing here! The only thing that I recognised was the council house! I also lolled at Grimsby section where the Chimera had set up a breeding centre in a Fish factory.. I had a lot of fun during the Cheddar Gorge bit, it really looked like it too, having been there several times.

As much as I can't fucking stand Linkin Pork, that song is one of the much lesser evils they've come up with and kind of fits with the game. I just hope that they don't stick loads of shitty angst-metal tunes in there as well or it will ruin the atmosphere.

  • Alan Wake

Finally got a chance to hop on my mate's 360 to check this out, I have to say I'm not all that impressed.

Graphically it's a mixed bag, the impressive day/night cycles that were showcased awhile ago seem to have been completely dumped, it's either day or night (mostly the latter). Shadows are static which doesn't work well with moving foliage, speaking of which the ground usually nice and detailed but the trees branches are often really low-res. That goes for a lot of textures in the game, I came across several blurred surfaces next to much higher-res ones which stuck out like a sore thumb at times. There's also some ugly aliasing going on with texture blending on the ground at times, looks odd.

You seem to fight the same enemies that crop up all over the place, with unlimited axes/knives (God that is friggin annoying). There's hardly no ammo for the shotgun or hunting rifle yet there's loads for the revolver.. seems a little unbalanced. The path through the game is very linear, if you explore you usually end up running into a fallen log or a vehicle or a high cliff.. or worse, you spawn more of those woodsman. The dialogue between Alan and his wife made me cringe.. "You get your sexy ass in the car"...

It's not all negative though, Alan's narration is just as good as Payne's, Remedy still rival just about anyone for that kind of thing and the storyline keeps you guessing. Some areas can look really pretty, like Alan's cabin on the isle and the town is nicely made.

For a game that took 5 years it's a "bit" of a letdown, it reminds me of Stalker's development, they got too ambitious and had to cut back on content stripping the sandbox gameplay and replacing it with a restricted environment (in Alan Wake's case, largely linear)

I only played a little before half-way through though so I guess I'll have to finish it and cast further judgement at that time.

Nice stuff, really like the rain effect and the atmosphere is brilliant. Shouldn't those lease signs be in Ukranian rather than English?

I am still playing Uncharted 1 as well, it's been a bit dull lately but I just hopped into a jeep with the girl and blowing vehicles up with grenades and machine gun = win.
