Some people are talking about the direction of fire, the security services are clearly being fired upon but they appear to be firing in the direction of buildings not down the street. Some people are suggesting that the snipers that had targeted police earlier on in the day could be the ones firing on the protesters and the SBU are firing back in their direction. This is still far from an open and shut case...

I don't know how else I can explain this... the previous day over 10 officers had been killed, previous to that 6 other officers had died in various clashes. The day after snipers were firing on police positions away from the protest camp, several were injured. After that the SBU were brought in with live ammo, likely issued to them because they didn't want a repeat of the previous day in order to keep control. They set up a cordon at the very top of Instytutska Street, this is it:

If you see the picture, you can see the central square of the Maidan down the road, this is where the protesters were. The SBU did not advance into the line of the protest camp and open fire on people, people kept coming up the hill towards them. Why did they do this? I have yet to hear anyone explain why they did this, the authorities were nowhere near the camp (apart from unarmed berkut in some places). Some of the people who came up the road towards them were spotted with guns, so the authorities opened fire... instead of the people retreating away from police lines... they. kept. advancing.

If an armed police unit in the UK set a cordon and no civilians are supposed to come near it and people do... they will at the very least fire warning shots.. if you're seen with a weapon, you'll be shot at directly. If it was the US, they probably wouldn't hesitate to kill you right there and then.

If the SBU had advanced towards the protest camp and started firing on people, my reaction to this would be very different believe me but they didn't, they kept away at the top of the hill. Don't get me wrong, the authorities were heavy handed and indiscriminate in the response towards them and an investigation will need to be carried out to determine who was responsible and what exactly happened in detail, especially those that fired on the medical staff that were trying to help. But aside from that, I reliterate... If you keep advancing towards armed authorities when you're told to go back.. it's best to listen to them, unless you want to get shot at.

I'm a realist... it runs in the family. It doesn't mean I don't care but if I aired shock at everything shit happening in the world it would be a very long list..

As for that last bit... Of course it isn't ok to shoot someone who throws eggs at your car, how is that in anyway comparable to what we're discussing here? Come on...

The parliament has passed an law (which is pretty much illegal given that they haven't been elected) making Ukrainian the official language of the state and rescinded the legal laws allowing Russian as the first language in certain areas where speakers are the majority. This basically means that all areas including Odessa where 90% of the population speak Russian and the Crimea which is populated with 70% ethnic Russians and tartars must use Ukrainian in all official means.

We're now seeing massive rallies against the Euromaidan and new government in several Eastern cities...

In Kerch the Russian flag was put on the Administrative building.

In Donetsk, Berkut (police) that left Kiev have arrived back in their home town and greeted by thousands of crowds praising them as heroes:

You're right, Erdogan's government has breached human rights in many quarters, especially being the nation that has jailed the most journalists in the world. Hard to say, they have a lot of bases around the country and they're one of the five major parties active in Ukraine, but their support mostly comes from Western Ukraine where the anti-Russian "Slava Ukrayini!" sentiment is high, hence the reason for some the divisions that exist.

Pretty much spot on. Russia is not so fussed about Ukraine joining the EU so long as their trade deals with Ukraine are not effected. However there is no way on Earth that Russia will allow Ukraine to join NATO, there's already enough tension with the baltic countries in the treaty bordering federal states and Russia will not allow herself to be encircled. West needs to understand that Ukraine as an independent state has had a very short history, with most of the current territory having been gifted from Imperial Russia and the USSR. Russia will always have legtimate interests and status within Ukraine.

Anyway, the situation for Russia hasn't turned out so bad. Tymoshenko released with a potential to be the president can be very good for Russia, since her relations with Putin were quite healthy (including the signing of the deal with led to her power abuse charges). Even if the new government is somewhat anti-Russia, given the past semi-decent relationship with Yukashenko's presidency even when he was selling arms to the Georgians during the war in South Ossetia, anything's possible.

Still... there is a lingering doubt as to the future of the nation given the obvious split between the country. Crimea is now considering the option of succeeding and joining up with Russia, several other Eastern parts such as Kharkiv have voiced objections over the events. A split of the country would fuck the economic situation completely, all of the major industries are in the East, imports/exports, fuels etc reside heavily in Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk and other cities close to the border with Russia. I wouldn't say that there is an end to the crisis just yet, Viktor or no Viktor...

You're missing the point there, sure many countries have joined the EU in the last 30 years... but Turkey is one of those countries that the EU has teased about membership over and over, which is where I see the same situation with Ukraine in some ways... the possibility of trade agreements by signing the Association Agreement, yet no concrete statements that Ukraine can actually join the EU...

As for corruption, yeah it definately exists, but Yanukovich didn't become the start of that, previous governments and facilities have been drenched in corruption as well, post Orange revolution Yukashenko included. The Oligarchs drive a lot of the politicial situations in Ukraine, like in Russia during the Yeltsin years (which Putin sacked 15 years ago) hence Ukraine has far more corruption today than Russia does.

Fixed for you... a lot of it derives from the anti-Russian sentiment that's focused on false history and the denial of any Russian influence within Ukraine to the point where some will swear that no one in the West speaks Russian (most Ukrainians throughout the country can speak Russian as a second language even if they don't do so) and that the nazi "liberation" of Ukraine from the SS was a good thing because communism was so much more worse. Some of the West would love to break off from the East part to become their own nation but can't (for aforementioned reasons about economy).

As for use of live ammo on protesters... it's not black and white... There were snipers shooting at police lines from buildings before it happened;

Police took causalties including one fatality before the order was given to use live rounds. Honestly it's horrible what happened, but you have to ask yourself why protesters with shields would keep advancing to the police position when they were warned to get back constantly... Still, RIP to the dead.

Protesters have failed and been kicked out of Nikolayev, Kharkov, Odessa and Zaporozhye and the Crimea is seeking to leave Ukraine for Russia if shit hits the fan.
