Quote from Thrik
I've worked out that the reason I find it so jarring with the names on the right is because I normally look at the avatar before the post, which is how I identify most people; without the avatars being on the left the first thing I automatically look at is the post so I have to go across to check out the avatar and then come back again.

Indeed the info bar on the right pretty annoying, it has proved very useful on the left side in the past. I see who posted before actually reading the message, and in some cases like Nexuz posts for example, i could ignore them by just seeing his avatar and avoid me any brain pollution.

I also vote for a darker layout, it's better than posting your contrasted map screenshots on a white page. ( a bit like that http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/

Well there is 8 forms to find (and certainly a last level and boss for the finish i presume ), you find 1 form in the demo.. so it should be around 15% indeed. Maybe less if you take in count the time you take to figure out stuff (which can be quite long sometime !!!!!!!!!)

Phew, i played a bit more before giving any criticism, something like 4 more hours and i don't seem to be that far in the game (i've got only 3 forms). But damn, i must have visited 10 kms of tunnels to be at that point
, and so far i'm honestly not disappointed to have bought it..Well. ok. I might actually be not really objective about this game because I'm a long time fan of the guy who made the graphic assets of Aquaria and also the fact that i know that this dude is a real passionate who is dedicated to make his games with love. Plus, it's an indie game (my dream of career "lololol"). But hey, i'll try to be as objective as i can ..

So quickly on the "+"s,
+ The game got its own visual style and universe
+ The soundtrack is amazing in its globality
+ The gameplay is smooth and intuitive if you play keyboard + mouse
+ The cooking/alchemy part so you have a reason to search every tunnel
+ Well made story
+ You encounter new creatures and assets at every corner
+ You can ride seahorses and various grouper fishes

So for the '-'s .. it would be hard to find alot though.
My biggest grief concern the probable lassitude the player could feel after playing some hours, because yeah, this game is mainly about the exploration of kilometers of underwater tunnels to find a new form and to use its special abilities to get to another part of the game (metroid, castelvania like). The story is also not linear, you can find the forms in the order you want and it can be hard to some players to keep hooked on playing.
Another one is the absence of the saving crystals at some critic places, sometimes it gets really annoying to have to redo an entire 10 minutes level to get to a boss and die figuring out what to do for the next time

And to finish, as much as i like derek's work, i've got to say that the character design of naija is terrible. ( what the hell is that haircut )

Go buy it guys ;D

Well that's it, i'm a bit disappointed but that was all really interesting.
I assisted to four conferences, the first was with an animator i've forgotten the name who showed us his techniques step by step to complete an animation, interesting.
Then the second was with Moby Francke the guy who did the concept art of Team fortress 2 but it was basically like what was posted on cgsociety : http://features.cgsociety.org/story_cus ... 338&page=1
The third but the best of them all was with Vin Die.. Michael Khaimzon the artistic director of crytek who made me sympathize with the shit crytek team must have been coming through with Khaimzon quest of photorealism..
Then the last was with Viktor Antonov, the independent designer of Half-life 2 who seems to be an international superstar judging by the number of people at his conference, he explained how he was doing to visually give a story to an environment, and a lot of fine arts related stuff. But i swear, with the cathedral ambiance, Antonov telling on a monotone voice how cylinders were friendly while readjusting his brushing and the sigh of a friend, i almost had an insane laughter in the middle of the conference.
But yeah, it was interesting to have those two insights of design, on one hand the fartsy artsy method and on the other photorealism and technology before anything.

I must be posting this too late ( perhaps because of the fact that i've been busy to death these days ) but yeah, i'll still ask..
I'm going to the Game Developer Conference at Lyon this Monday and Tuesday..
So is there by any chance some fellow mapcorians also going to it ? So we could meet up and have a drink or more ?

QuoteYou can see the difference for yourself when we compare Picture 2, a screenshot taken from 'Halo: Combat evolved', a PC game which was among the best of its class at release to Picture 1, an image from 'Crysis', a PC game which is slated to release soon. Halo uses DirectX®9.0b to support its graphics while Crysis makes use of DirectX®10.
