Employers often want a guy who already know how to do art for the project they are doing so he can jump right into production without spending any time for formation;
Say if they hire for a medieval fantasy project, having medieval stuff in your book will definitely be a plus
Same thing with graphic quality, if it's a realistic next gen AAA, and you did some, you have a bonus; if it's for a cartoony style and you already made some cool hand painted textures that a bonus too.
If you are near and can relocate easily, it helps
If the theme of your work is irrelevant, but the quality is so outstanding compared to the other portfolios, that helps too.
So basically know yourself, know what the company is doing, and adapt your work to what they are looking for (or choose the right company and project which is making the same stuff you have in your folio ).
The personality of the candidate usually comes after that, especially for env grunt artist roles, you just have to be friendly and not being a dick, which shouldn't be too hard
Although if that is for a full time position and they plan on keeping you for a long time, it becomes more relevant because they need to make you fit in the team. But don't lick their shoes, your supposed to work for them, not them graciously allowing you to live your "dream"; they don't deserve that

I'm currently reading the memoirs of jean de joinville written by the guy himself in 1309;
Jean de Joinville was the son of a noble family of Champagne who left his family to join the king of France Louis IX and the christian knights onto the seventh crusade and to who he became later confident and counsellor.
The text is meant to be dedicated to the son of Louis IX on the life of his father, where de Joinville clearly write down to earth what was happening during the crusades and after. He is basically a witness of his time as a fighting man during the crusade;
This is pretty amazing to read because it forces you into a century/culture that isn't ours anymore with people with different psyche and way to see the world.. it's amazing to take a step back and get a "new" look on our own time; worth many many sci fi books to me

Some glimpses :
QuoteA blow from one of the enemy’s swords landed in the middle of Erard de Sevirey’s face, cutting through his nose so that it was left dangling over his lips. At that moment the thought of Saint James came into my mind, and I prayed to him: ‘Good Saint James, come to my help, and save us in our great need.’ Just as I had uttered this prayer Erard de Sevirey said to me: ‘My lord, if you think that neither I nor my heirs will incur reproach for it, I will go and fetch you help from the Comte d’Anjou, whom I see in the fields over there.’ I said to him, ‘My dear man, it seems to me you would win great honour for yourself if you went for help to save our lives; your own, by the way, is also in great danger.’ (I spoke truly, for he died of his wound).
Quote"King Louis also spoke to me of a great assembly of clergy and Jews which had taken place at the monastery of Cluny. There was a poor knight there at the time to whom the abbot had often given bread for the love of God. This knight asked the abbot if he could speak first, and his request was granted, though somewhat grudgingly. So he rose to his feet, and leaning on his crutch, asked to have the most important and most learned rabbi among the Jews brought before Him. As soon as the Jew had come, the knight asked him a question. “May I know, sir,” he said, “if you believe that the Virgin Mary, who bore our Lord in her body and cradled Him in her arms, was a virgin at the time of His birth, and is in truth the Mother of God?”
The Jew replied that he had no belief in any of those things. Thereupon the knight told the Jew that he acted like a fool when – neither believing in the Virgin, nor loving her – he had set foot in that monastery which was her house. “And by heaven” exclaimed the knight, “I’ll make you pay for it” So he lifted his crutch and struck the Jew such a blow with it near the ear that he knocked him down. Then all the Jews took to flight, and carried their sorely wounded rabbi away with them. Thus the conference ended.
The abbot went up to the knight and told him he had acted most unwisely. The knight retorted that the abbot had been guilty of even greater folly in calling people together for such a conference, because there were many good Christians there who, before the discussion ended, would have gone away with doubts about their own religion through not fully understanding the Jews. “So I tell you,” said the king, “that no one, unless he is an expert theologian, should venture to argue with these people. But a layman, whenever he hears the Christian religion abused, should not attempt to defend its tenets, except with his sword, and that he should thrust into the scoundrel’s belly, and as far as it will enter.”
I'm forcing myself to read the original text in old medieval french, it's hard but i'm finding it so much instructive.
I've found an ebook version of the text translated into english, if you guys are courageous enough
give it a try, it's worth reading :http://archive.org/s...age/n7/mode/2up
and in old french if you want to read it

You could also add that metacritic seems to use a coefficient of worthiness depending from where the review is coming from which is not visible anywhere. And that game journalists opinion, especially for those doing websites only, can be easily bought by editors. It's hard to believe in any objectivity at all

Quote from killertomato
When the skinny men of MapCore unite to talk about how obesitas isn't real and isn't worth talking about, especially in the game industry, you're all sending a message to other MapCore community members -- don't post, don't participate, your feelings aren't valid.
I think that's okay in EOT because that's the special space for it; I avoid EOT and I'm fine with it.
But if you do it out here, in public, keep in mind that people are going to see this, and you're making someone like me feel less welcome here. What, so I'm going to have to start avoiding the "Gaming Discussion" forums too? I wonder how the fat guys of MapCore feel?
I'm not saying "censor" your opinions; feel as skinny as you want. But just know that there's a chilling effect on others you're intimidating with that attitude. A consequence. And really, you end up looking tactless.
Don't worry, no one is going to speak-up and complain because they feel intimidated. They'll just leave.
I hope you'll get banned of the game industry business corporations.

First thing off my personal opinion is that i find the video to be a completely shallow enumeration of denunciations over fictional characters (this is important) that don't define what a woman as a single being is.
That said, Jetsetlemming when you write:
QuoteYou know, if you don't want to be interpreted as a misogynist you should probably pretend to respect women enough to actually argue with them instead of dismissing them out of hand.

What you are saying is that if someone would contest Sarkeesian and the opinions of her followers, they are having an argument with each and every woman on the planet ? Since when is she the voice of my girlfriend, mother, friends and family or of your own personal feminine relatives. And this is obviously the shield she is using to defend her own ideas and projects.
There are several different things : a woman as a single being / feminism as an ideology / sarkeesian movement and community. And those cannot be put under the same banner at any moment.
I'm against any form of communitarianism (although this is an idealistic point of view since it's pretty difficult to do without), and especially those which get complementary beings such as men and women apart.
That said if i would want to it's pretty hard for me to justify being part of a minority : i'm white, caucasian, of catholic education, i've got brown eyes and brown hair; i'm not homosexual, i'm not ginger, i'm not handicapped and hasn't been victim of discrimination of any kind.
Is that a reason for a human being to not voice an opinion about a community who claims indecently to represent all women on the planet ?
I'm not the stereotype videogames show about white straight males, i'm not duke nukem, drake, solid snake, kratos, etc And if i disagree with the image of the man pictured here, it's ok; because I know they are fictional characters of cultural products and don't represent me in any kind since i'm a unique human being, coming from the same mold maybe; but lived life in my unique personal way.
In my opinion, cultural products should express whatever they would want to, and should be free of morals; morality should be something you keep at home.
This is over the top, but I wouldn't mind seeing released a Theme : Deportation camp / Anno 1788: the slave trade / Ustachis : call for duty. Although i would very strongly disagree about what they convey, but give them the right to exist.
And those examples are much less trivial stuff than what Sarkeesian is denouncing.
You shouldn't be afraid of hurting people feelings when creating a cultural product, you can't call anything an artistic space if that freedom of expression doesn't exist.
And to me this clearly shows how under pressure the video game industry is, and probably is one of the most artistically restricted media. Acknowledging Lobbyists opinions like Sarkeesian or any other dictates is actually getting a step back for the videogame development creative process (if you want to call this an artistic space).
And don't get me wrong, i feel for the people feeling bad when identifying themselves into fictional stereotypes; but they just shouldn't seeing themselves into those and get offended.

Really i find the subject quite dry to be honest, games for girls portraying them in a decent way do exist, by tons, which they find fun to play; i know it for a fact : i worked on a horse riding mmo game.
Ok it pleased the several 40 years old men shown in the database too, we even had a lawsuit for harrasment against a 50 years old dude. Now that's equality of enjoyment, and probably makes me the most progressive game developper of the boards working for the minorities of little girls and pedophiles alike.
Seriously though, when i see my girlfriend playing videogames (because she plays quite a lot actually, but isn't a nerd ) what does she likes :
- games like final fantasy 8 & 9, kingdomhearts, the last remnant, dungeon keeper, diablo 2, world of goo, plants vs zombies, terraria, stronghold, skyrim, baldur's gate 2, xcom etc
- she likes character customization for sure
- what's interesting is that most of the time (depending on the game) she doesn't like to play a girl and especially in the ones where she is forced to play an arbitrary given feminine character (she would rather play an animal/non human character if she has the occasion, like in skyrim).
- she also quite enjoyed god of war 3, playing this super macho man slashing around in this fancy greek ecosystem full of phallic symbols to the point of giving you a strange erection when you open doors and coffers. She even enjoyed the QTE where this weird abusive bald man go easy with aphrodite and her friends; but she didn't even identified in any way with the girls that were pictured here, because it's just so ridiculous.
Thing to never forget is that if games are about role playing, they are all about fantasms.
I enjoy playing for the laugh a bald man ridiculously full of testosterone in god of war (so she does), a cold blooded assassin, duke nukem, some super soldier or greedy gangster in GTA or whatever. (as ridiculous as it is, but i do enjoy "brainy" games too
)But these are just fantasms, for men, it's for the fun, it's ridiculous, over the top and too big for life. Not far at all from some Sergio Leone movies.
I mean i don't enjoy Ben Stiller or Jennifer Aniston in some random romantic comedy, nor i enjoy sex & the city.
And she also doesn't enjoy the virilism i seek in my WW2 wargames where i play an empowering general sending his flamboyant soldiers to the death or my competitive FPSs holding a bit fat long gun shooting at other players dominating them.
And that is perfectly normal stuff !!
What Anita actually attacks is games designed specifically for men fantams, which are a majority because yes, most of the consumers are males who like virility and borderline homo erotic games; and really there's not so much women to enjoy these actually like as i never saw a woman who fantasm to be a Sergio Leone cowboy or some Clint Eastwood.
If she honestly wanted to lift the debate way far beyond from just scratching the surface of videogames, excluding other medias and get a clear understanding of why men fantasms picture easy women, evil dominating seductresses and princesses in distress. It would take much more than lifting polemic and attention around her own image, setting up a donation system and community management on her website or setting up a kickstarter page for a ridiculous amount of 160 000$ when it's not that expensive to hold a blog/twitter/website/make videos on youtube.
In the timeline : denouncing ==> get money ==> presenting her developed full ideas
My tiny humble 2 cents

Unreal world, this is such an unique game, some sort of rogue like / survival game, i've never seen anything like it. It's super time sinking, and i spent 15 minutes throwing rocks at a squirrel in a tree. But damn that was fun
