  • I'm pretty much done with any modern PC games...

Just get behind the times. Its so much easier and cheaper. Have a computer that is 2 years out of date, and play games that are 2 years old. Computer parts are cheap as dirt when they're that old, games are cheap, all the patches/bugs have been worked out, there are tons of reviews for games/hardware out there so you know exactly what to get.

Or you could just not play games anymore, like me.

The top part of the base needs some work. Something doesn't look right about it. Too clean maybe?

bingo. With the ammount of water staining down the sides from drainage off the top, the top needs to be much dirtier. Try some splotchy rust, just dirty up the whole top in general. Maybe some whitish/mineral deposits.

Since that's all I have to work with, I have to give it a shot.I've never really been a fan of the entire "Let's wait until it's release with our crits", I'd rather be proven wrong.

And wondering how you mix up so many different things, and end up with a good result, is that considered bashing?

Stalker with cars isn't a bad thing, I just imagine that is what the finished product will feel like.

Borderlands features a groundbreaking content generation system allowing for near-endless variety in missions, environments, enemies, weapons, item drops and character customization.

I mean Stalker with MMO random dungeon system for the tasks\quests..lol i'm just giving you a hard time. The bannage in this thread got me all excited.

I thought stolve's bashing of fo3 based on a 30 second cinematic trailer was impressive; but this, this puts that to shame... based on 13 words and some concept art on the cover of a gaming magazine. Truly, a new bar has been set.

Hmm yes would be quite tricky. The problem with video games is you have to 'do' something, the player has to have input, otherwise it'd just be a movie. Vanquishing an enemy is by far the most popular thing to 'do'. Unfortunately for anything religious, that goes right out the window, since vanquishing damn near anything is wrong. This reminds me of a simpsons episode where Bart plays a christian video game at Rod and Tod Flanders' house. It was basically a first person shooter except instead of killing people you converted them.

The only way I can see this possible (without doing a Simsons-eque 'religious shooter') would be something like a monkey island puzzle kinda game. You run around and gather clues to some sort of mystery, with religious overtones.

The only time its led me astray is when I went to NY, near Flushing I think. Its map showed our destination at the other end of the street, so we went like 1/2way down and started looking at numbers and said "wtf, wrong direction". It was a 1-way but we just looped around and found our way. Not horrific, maybe delayed us 2 minutes

Right now I'm planning a trip to NC from CT, so yeah... Google, you bettah be right .

A little concerning.... I've been checking the route for a few times over the last few weeks(anxious to get moving ). It used to send me through Pennsylvania and down 81, then directly south into charlotte. now its sending me through jersey, maryland, etc down I-95... So for some reason in the past week its changed its mind on which route to take...

He quite obviously meant in the sense of how well it penetrated the HL2 player base (read: not very, apart from an initial buzz).

Yeah, he didn't say he personally didn't like the mod, he said its popularity with the general public is... hmm not so good.

Okay okay, so did you subdivide a MUCH wider version and then just clip off the wider parts? Or how did you do this? EXPLAIN PLZ

On another note, I have another question to ask you guys, I started orangemapping last night and so far I have the bridge part of the map (main centerpiece) mapped length wise..........BUT its 4096 units long! Is that too long? Keep in mind that there will be huge mounds of rubble a fallen buildings blocking most of the view, but is that too long for one straight road?

Its up to you. Sounds pretty long. Just throw a big freakin box around it, throw a few lights around, compile, and go run around on it. If it seems too big, make it smaller. At least thats what I do because my perception of space is awful. 90% of the time I compile its because I don't know if something is too big or too small(usually too big, I always make things too big ).

I am also not sure why they made the bridge a displacement. I would have brushed it personally, but hey.. what do I know. I'd just make a cylinder on its side with twice the desired number of segments(in this case, 32), then vertex manipulate boxes until they're as close to the vertices of the cylinder as possible. But then again, I suck.

Oh come on guys, I've seen MUCH MUCH MUCH worse 1st tries. Give the guy a break.

Just keep at it. Look at other people's work, go run through a few levels of HL2 and see how they use floor textures/wall textures etc together. Thats the first big learning curve, is using textures appropriately. The size/scaling issue just takes some time to know how big things 'look' in game. After that you can start to worry about props/entities/lighting(!!!) etc.
