Skdr are you going to apply at other companys now? As cool as Valve is i wouldn't stick all my hopes with them and wasting time on more custom maps.

You got interviewed on the other side of the world. That is something. Getting a job in europe should be easy for you in comparison.

In the end industry experience and AAA titles on your list weight more then custom maps. And maybe (or certainly) these things would have made the difference for you in the valve interview. Be smart and start your carreer now on a place that is not called valve.

being at the army teaches you a lot. you need to organize your self, force your self to do much stronger sit-ups, impress people that know nothing better than the usual internet guy and the list goes on. imo joining the army is something that trains you mentally for your life and gives you a wide overview about cleaning disciplines.have fun with being a soldier!

< If he would have joined the army it would read like this.

The most exciting things to model, a crate!

I'm not the expert with stuff like that but something looks wrong to me on that crate. I think it's the normal map for the top part. It seems like the light comes wrong the wrong direction there. Maybe try to flip it?

For me it was all about working with the right people on mod projects.

The now lead level designer of Grin worked on the same mod as me when he was still an amateur.

I just wrote him a email a couple years later when i felt ready to work in the industry and got hired.

So the best advice that i can give you is to work on mods/hobby projects in your freetime and do some social networking.

Once your portfolio is good enough its pretty easy to get your foot in the door especialy if you know the right people already.

There is also a 3 part interview with my boss on gamereactor.tv

He talks about the history of the company there. Might want to check that out after reading the gamasutra article.

I'm afraid the game is too much action based from what i've seen so far (and therefore less creepy than it could be). If this was like System Shock it would totally rock with these gfx and art style.

What i like about the art style is that they made the "mockup look" their thing. How often you look on levels with unfinished or dev textures and say "wow that looks cool". But nobody had the balls yet to actualy make a game that looks like this.

It looks really good. I like the art style!

Trailer missed a bit of a punch tho. Think it was the downtempo music that didnt fit so well.

serious: game industry isn't the best place for having a family. regarding those people i know most of them changed the company at least each 3rd year. good luck relocating with a wife and children. one reason for me not to be in this industry tbh.

But where do you not have this problem? Especialy in germany with its high unemployment rate. No job is secure nowadays. And no matter in which industry you work in, if you loose your job the fucking Arbeitsamt will send you to the other side of the country if they find you a job there.

I think games industry is no problem for the family once you are settled in an area with a more then 1-2 developers.

    Things? What things?

For example your real opinion on a game or event. As a professional you always represent your company, if you want or not. You have to be careful what you say/write in public because everything reflects back on your employer. A private forum would give a bit more freedom here.

Maybe the industry is still too young and the right forms for networking/community arn't here yet or not popular enough yet?

It would be a big win for everybody if we had a big community where level designers of all disciplines (you know there is not only fps and action games) would share their experiences and knowledge about tools, job opportunities etc. I would imagine a ld specific mix between sites like LinkedIn, gamasutra and mapcore (without EOT and with additional sections for other kinds of level design), with maybe a public section (where amateurs can participate also) and a private section for pros (so things can be discussed that are not for public).
