Is the cartoony feel of the geometry just coming from how simpified it is? The poly budget is pretty low since this is just a map prop. 1800 of the 2800 polys in the cab model are in the wheels.

I think the cartoony feel comes from the flat and very simplified shapes and surfaces. The model would certainly benefit from a normal map that gives it back some 3d detail for a more realistic look.

I saw the following truck today in the portfolio of a former coworker. This should give you an idea what i'm talking about. As you see the model itself is quite low poly too but the normal map adds quite a lot of nice details:

When i'm not motivated i will do something anyway. I will not be as productive then but at least the time doesn't go to waste completely. Even the small stuff you do will add up to something big over the weeks or months.

Another thing that i do to stay productive is to set myself small goals for every day. Usualy this happens the day before when i go to bed. These goals are always realistic, like stuff that i can achieve with only 50% productivity. So its easy to achieve more on a day then what my goal was and that is always a good and motivating feeling.

My main point of critique for that truck is that the art style is very unclear. The geometry is very cartoony while the texture goes in a photorealistic direction.

This would work better as a portfolio piece if you would give it a cartoony TF2 style texture and it would show possible employers that you can do different styles.

lol Kokos @fucking up my post

Here is the picture again for the people who missed it:

    [Blocked Image: http://i50.tinypic.com/2qsuzyf.jpg]

On the left the tree with only diffuse and alpha, on the right the same tree with selfillum added after i got it to work properly (probably needs a little tweaking because the shadow areas might be a little too bright now).

Very cool tree , what i wonder actually... is how you managed to have a good resolution like that for your tree leaves ? When i use the render to texture option in tree[d], it seems to be stuck to 512*512, and always give me dirty pngs

That is a 512x512 texture for the leafs. However the single leaf that i used for the render in tree[d] was custom made. And i did some photoshopping afterwards to the colors and to the masking to give it a little more depth.

Got it working now. You need two alphachannels. One in the diffuse texture and the other in the specular texture. The later will be used for the selfillum info. The stupid thing is that this seems to override the vertexlighting on a model (selfillum is set to 50% but still each plane has the same brighness now). So its not really what i tried to accomplish (which is kickass foliage) :/

    My vmt looks like this:

    Code
    "VertexLitGeneric"

    {

    	"$basetexture" "Cherrytree/cherryleafes01"

    	"$envmapmask" "Cherrytree/cherryleafes01_spec"

    	"$envmap" "env_cubemap"

    	"$alphatest" 1

    	"$nocull" 1

    	"$model" 1

    	"$surfaceprop" "foliage"

    	"$selfillum_envmapmask_alpha" 1

    }

Anyone know how this works? No matter what i try i cant get both things to work at the same time.

I remember that i had the same problem when i worked for Insurgency and i remember that i figured it out eventualy (i created a glowing aimpoint for one of the weapons that was visible on night maps). They seem to have removed that lense tho so i cant look there how i did it

Germans prefer the other way of sillyness. We don't have any AC in our homes for summer when temperatures can be tropical for weeks.

I only sound extremist because this is the internet and i took the stand of the christmas critic in this thread.

In reality i celebrate christmas with my family and i appreciate the fun time that my nephews have, the good food etc.

My comments reflect much more what my inner concious tells me regarding this holiday.

Eh, life's too short for that shit. I don't believe in a religion but I wouldn't say I'm against them — I don't really mind if people want to waste their time with superstition.

Probably going a bit off-topic now. I don't mind people having superstitions either. But the reason why i'm against religion is because they interfere with my life and my freedom on a daily basis. We don't live in a "live and let live" society. We are surrounded by religious nuts who make laws for us based on their superstitious beliefs and there are religious groups who treaten our freedoms and values, who kill people daily in the name of their god etc. I value freedom too much to just ignore these things.

The Christian thing really bothers you? I'd imagine the majority of people celebrating Christmas don't really follow Christianity at all — it's simply become a public holiday that revolves around having fun.

Yes it bothers me. I'm very much against organized religion all year and so are a lot of atheists/agnostics. It's very hypocritic to celebrate jesus birth then. We don't celebrate any muslim, hindu or buddhist holidays either so why bother with christian traditions?

I don't know what is so fun about christmas either. The drinking? I can do that all year. Also the family gathering. If a family is funcional they will find always reasons to gather outside of christmas. Birthdays, weddings, first school days, funerals etc.

But anyway i don't want to be the party pooper for you. Just my 2 cents.

What's not to like about Christmas? Time off work; lots of food; drinking; and sparkly, shiny things everywhere. Some people...

First of all its a christian celebration (Jesus birth). I find it wrong when atheists or agnostics (like me) celebrate it. It's also a celebration where social pressure forces you to waste a lot of money on gifts. It was much cooler as a kid when i was on the receiving end

The next thing is that so many people hide their real face behind fake smiles and friendliness during that time. It's disgusting. What stops them from being friendly all year?

Then we have the issue of christmas music. It drives me fucking mental. This shit is everywhere.

    I could go on.

I don't give a flip about christmas. I have no decoration whatsoever. The only good think about christmas is the food and the happy faces of the nephews when they get their gifts.

No, "its" is referring to the game. The word "and" is there for a reason. If i was referring to the art style the sentence would be something like "Don't like the cartoony art style, it's obviously a rip-off of some other games.

Don't know if i mix up german and english grammar here but to me the sentence seems clear.

It looks alright in the new gameplay videos on gametrailers.com and i think it could find an audiance but my first impressions are only confirmed. The game trys to be a bit of everything. I see Killzone 2, cod, mirrors edge, tf2, bioshock, crysis, borderlands all mixed together but no own ideas. Doesn't mean it has to be bad but the approach reminds me of japanese car design. And you know while japanese cars are reliable and have a lot of features they also lack a bit of character.
