Interesting thought. Germans proud themself of being the people of poets and thinkers. But how could an outsider ever truly appreciate german literature without speaking the language perfectly? Foreigners may have heard storys about Goethe and Schiller but what are their chances to grasp them? Even in german its hard because their way of using the language is so oldschool by now.

There are countless subtleties and phrases in english that are extremely hard to translate. Works both ways tho. Just yesterday i found no propper solution to translate "Ist der Ruf erst ruiniert, lebt 's sich gänzlich ungeniert". You can translate the words but you can't translate the wit.

I always prefer to read stuff in the original language. Something always gets lost in translation. Same for movies/tv shows etc. I even utterly despise subs nowadays but in germany they are unfortunately everywhere. So what happens is that i basicly watch no shows and movies on TV anymore. Instead i download british/american/canadian shows that interest me and watch them in english.

I notice something similar when people ask me to translate stuff into english. I know perfectly what it means but i have trouble to instantly find the german words for it. I think that is because my english has become good enough that i don't need to translate stuff in my head anymore. I'm able to think and to understand in english. So when someone asks me for a translation thats something i'm not used to anymore.

Of course my english is not as good as my german but one interesting thing about languages is that its way easier to read and to understand them then to speak them or to write them. I only lived in sweden for 2 years but i can read most of it and i understand quite some but i have absolute trouble to speak or to write it.

If you love the scenery in Barry Lyndon watch The Duellists! Ridley Scott borrowed a lot from Barry Lyndon in that one but he took it to a whole new level. It's like the most aesthetic movie ever.

Mask Ritual in Eyes Wide Shut (NSFW). Such an underrated gem of a movie. Like all Kubrick movies it gains more and more appreciation tho the older it gets. Lets see what people think about it 20 years from now.

Clusterfuck thread of the year confirmed and it's only 9th of january.

It's almost like they had some interns design the backgrounds in photoshop and playing with color filters.

I don't know what to think about it. Maybe the story is good and worth watching. But certainly it looks like a B-movie or a movie where the art direction went horribly wrong.

Same for me but i can totaly understand why some people want to work on big stuff while others rather want to work on small stuff. It all comes down to things like how career driven you are, how much creeative freedom you want etc.

Not everybody wants to work on the biggest games and for the biggest companys. Whats so wrong about that?
