I mentioned that i have been to Brittany. I really can recommend it for people who love beautiful rustic scenery and cool medievally architecture. Especially the north coast. I think it's the best part of northern France for vacation. Just wouldn't recommend it for people who want to relax on the beach for two weeks. The Atlantic weather seemed a bit too unstable for that. It's more of a place for active people who go hiking, sailing or short trips to nearby towns.

Happy Börsday!

Edinburgh was on my list to vist this year but Ryanair just cancelled the flight route from my hometown a week ago. Would have made things so easy.

I also want to go to Bruges after i saw the movie In Bruges.

For example soldiers standing on cars in situations where they should take cover or at least lay on the ground.

The soldiers in the groups never care for their sectors not even in a hostile or unknown environment. Except for one scene i believe where the director must have thought it ads something to it. That stuff is very basic infantry 101. A group always needs 360 degree protection.

There are scenes where they run around like boyscouts. whole group tight together, so that a single grenade could kill them all, not looking left or right. In one scene the group splits up everyone on his own instead giving each other fire protection. I could go on.

I was there once actualy. I remember the harbor because there was a huge ass meeting of sailing ships, war ships etc. Not the most beautiful city in the Bretagne but i guess i have to blame my own countrymen for that. However the Bretagne overall is very beautiful. I liked it more then other parts of France, also the people seemed friendlier and less cocky towards non french speakers then in other parts of the country.

Hurt Locker looked good indeed. I found it very underwhelming tho when it came to realism. I hate it when in war movies all the actors and extras obviously never even had basic training. Its such an immersion breaker.

Imo there is a difference between personal taste and the artistical "value" of something. Even if you don't like something you should be able to appreciate it on a different level if you know a thing or two about the medium or art form. Typical example for me would be Citizen Kane. I find this movie utterly boring and not aged well at all yet i can see why so many people regard it as one of the greatest movies ever.

Obviously the movie was not an automatic success as we all know. Just pointing out that was e-freak considers "cheap looking" is actualy the opposite of that. Everything else is a question of personal taste.

"Eyes Wide Shut" made extensive use of Christmas lights (the story is set in the Christmas season). The colours red, blue, yellow and green feature predominantly in the film. This is enhanced by the use of Christmas decorations. It is often suggested that the colour scheme is an important symbolic schemata. This theory has weight, considering the four 'modern art' posters in the hospital hallway which individually consist of these colours (suggesting a consonance of location and symbolic meaning) and Kubrick's reputation as a master of detail. More simply it may suggest the primal or basic nature of the thematic content. Shop-fronts and street signs also express a quasi-semiotic meaning in that they convey information to an observant audience that the characters are unaware of. For example, before Bill enters the prostitute's apartment building, they stop at a store with the sign 'The Lotto Shop', perhaps indicating that he is gambling with his health.

Are you nuts? The use of light is one of the best parts of the movie. You can see that Kubrick put a lot of effort and love for detail into it. It actualy plays a major role in the movie (which is not surprising for a neo-noir).

The colors red and blue for example have a meaning in the movie and are directly related to certain emotional states if you pay attention.

I also believe that he used white/yellow light as he would have used it for a black and white film noir back in the days. The movie is full of chiaroscuro effects! It's sometimes quite bright for a color movie (the bright lamps that you see all over the place are very unusual for a color movie) but notice how good the movie would still look as a classic noir thanks to them:

North side of the Garda lake in Italy. I know Italy from the Alps to Sicily and this was the most beautiful place that i have seen. It's like a norwegian fjord but with awesome weather and all the other good sides of Italy:

I never knew this was a Final Fantasy game when i was sitting in the office and people next to me working on it. Only found out afterwards. The whole game was heavily influenced by Moonstone (if someone remembers this classic Amiga action rpg).

Not sure if whoever works on it can be admired because i know as much now that the average gamer does not accept japanese games that are developed outside japan.

I watched this western "Hang 'em High" with Clint Eastwood not long ago. I thought that the beginning was very beautiful. Unfortunately only found a video with commentary on it. If you ever watch the movie its getting even better after the bad guys arrive. The first 5-10 minutes of this movie are very very excellent with an rollercoaster of feelings. Only afterwards the movie gets quite generic unfortunately.

Goethes influence on german philosophy (and a lot of other fields) was tremendous. And i think its possible to discuss this on a scientific level. It's even possible to understand concepts like "faustian" as you mentioned. It's just a synonym for something that you once desired but that will haunt you forever now that you have it.

I would still think its damn impossible to understand the beauty of Goethes poetry without speaking the language. The whole book(s) is made of perfectly rhyming and flowing poems. I wouldn't even know how to translate a single line of it.

My guess is that english translations cover the story but nothing beyond that. And probably it's the same with Shakespeare translated to german. I'm not really an expert tho.
