I have a small tip: When it's wet surfaces tend to be darker then when they are dry. So take that into account when doing/tweaking your diffuse maps/materials. Also reflectivity and gloss is often higher on a wet surface. But don't go overboard with it and consider the surface type of your material. On some stuff it just looks like a layer of slime. Study some real world references.

A little something of what Minos and i have been up to during the last couple months. Just a small scene in Cryengine 3. Minos did the buildings, shacks, walls and lighting. I did the foliage, trees, terrain and props (except for the military vehicle). Credit also to Mark Winter for putting together the video and Jamel Drayton for the fx.

You were just a driver. You don't know what's going on in the turret. For starters the optics on the Abrams are on the right not on the left.

I will choose a proper noir over Dark City anyday. Jenniffer Connely looks smokin' hot in it tho.

So I'm not the only one that completely missed all the dialogue in that scene

You should try out hardcore porn. It has desensitised me in a way that i'm now able to focus on dialogue in less explicit scenes.

":qs0asdbr]I believe this kinda fits what we're discussing here and the so called-crunch time, when people whine about it, what they are doing really is giving up, because they're sane, like jobs say; so I don't blame them, their fighting for their right to have a life outside work.

To be honest nothing pisses me more off than rich people talking about these matters. It's easy for them to come up with such phrases. If everyone of us would get fantastic pay and the rewards that a guy like him gets then "passion" would automaticaly be on a whole different level.

The word passion anyway is so often abused in this industry. If you dedicate all your time to something that you love that's not passion that's obsession. And imo that's not healthy.

I don't mind crunching (or rather overtime) that much as long as it's on my own accord. Most times when I hear a producer suggesting overtime then it usually makes it have the opposite effect on me; I somehow feel that my personal investment in my work is being torn away by forcing me to do it. I also have the, maybe naive, point of view that working in a games company everybody should be responsible and flexible enough to get the best results and have the freedom to do it in the manner the deem best, which obviously is hard when you're working cross disciplines and have dependencies from others, and when you have a family waiting for you at home

The psychology behind it is indeed interesting. As a freelancer/contractor i often work longer than 8 hours and on weekends too but it doesn't bother me that much because i still feel like a free man and i'm able to enjoy my work. But if someone demands from me to be there, effectively killing all my private interests and activities for that period it turns my stomach.

Well yea i think the company grew too fast and focussed on producing crap for Hollywood. That doesn't change the fact that they were ultimately screwed over by their buisness partners (Square wasn't the only one). The incoming economy crisis certainly didn't help either.

Depressing read. If i ever end up in a studio where excessive crunch and overtime are part of the company culture i don't see myself staying there for long. My mental and physical health takes priority. If that makes me "not passionate enough" then so be it.
