Wish i had the time for some side projects.
With Steam Workshop and CE3 this looks like a fun platform to make custom stuff for. Also digging the music.

Hey guys,
i thought it's about time that i open a thread for the game that i'm working on. Insurgency 2 has been in development for about a year now and is scheduled to be released early next year. Game is based on Source Engine. Developed by a new studio (New World Interactice), which sits in Denver, Colorado. The small but fine team mostly consists of devs who worked on the original Insurgency mod.
We just released a new gameplay video that can be found here:
Also feel free to check out our Kickstarter campaign and if you feel like it spread the word and/or pledge a couple bucks. Every bit of help is much appreciated

The campaign had a slow start but hopefully it will pick up in the coming weeks. More updates and announcements are on the way which should help to create momentum.
If it's succesfull it will be a big help to give us enough time to give the game the polish that it deserves. We already have a solid base, most aspects of the game are working but especialy the environments are still quite rough around the edges as you can see in the gameplay video. And as many of you know this is a very time consuming task on Source Engine.

Of these examples only number 3 has a similar effect as the one that i posted and it has a higher tricount actualy.
Here is the thread on polycount where i got the trick from. Check it out: http://%7boption%7d
It does a pretty good job imo. You can't really tell that the props haven't been baked.

Faking is for a low poly if you don't want to make a hipoly for it.

Looks amazing.

There are plenty of threads about tanks and armoured vehicles on polycount that you can check out to get an idea what the hp mesh is for.
Btw Seir there is also another method other then chamfering to fake smooth edges. This seems to be quite popular with people who use only ndo for their normal maps:

penE that's a really nice model. Will be interesting to see how you do this. Especially the bags and ropes on top.
RedYager the tank looks very blocky. I take it you didn't make it with a hipoly?

Last BB episode was great! Some really dark stuff. Almost had a David Lynch vibe to it.
Also watched Soldier of Fortune with Bud Spencer yesterday. For some reason i've never seen it and it seems almost completely unknown. I don't get it! This is some Life of Brian level comedy.
Maybe because the english dubbing is quite bad. I watched it in German which was ok.External Content www.youtube.comContent embedded from external sources will not be displayed without your consent.Through the activation of external content, you agree that personal data may be transferred to third party platforms. Nice review but i think you should have put a spoiler warning in the thread title. Some of us haven't played the game yet!

Nice explanation Philip. You should write some new tutorials when you have the time. Your tutorials are always the best.
Noob question: Doesn't beveling also create more vertex data because you create more geometry? What would be the difference in vertex data between a simple cube like that with split uv's and the beveled cube with one smoothing group? I have to admit i don't know much about that. Also the beveled cube wouldn't you still have to split the uv's one way or another to reduce distortion? Also arn't small thin polygons actualy pretty bad for rendering performance? I thought i've read about that a couple times.
I learned it with uv splits and different smoothing groups from the start. Beveling is more like a last resort to me when i can't get nice normals on rather complex geometry.

Just bevel those edges. Your low poly has to reflect your high poly in shape as much as possible, so try and round off the edges as much as it is in the high poly, without being so... high poly. The low poly cube you have at the minute has some very hard edges and there's no way that your normal map will be able to hide that.
I disagree with that. It's perfectly possible to do this without bevels on such a simple cube. Would be different if the hp was way more rounded around the edges.

Nice! Did you "next-gen" the bbq grill too?

Yea she's a bitch. I hate the son much more tho. He makes me want to punch a disabled person everytime he appears on the screen.

Or you try something new. A physics door where you have to press a button if you don't want it to open automaticaly.

Workaholics. Great show.

my guess it's something from ww2 or the cold war. some structure that was shipped over the sea, then sunk and was forgotten because you can only read about it in some military archives

I'm happy for you Helder and wish you best of luck and a fun time!

But promise me to help Peris getting of the meth and crack cocaine!

I have yet to play a freemium game that doesn't suck. One you could play for 200 hours.
Trackmania says hi. Thousands of hours for me. They have a better more player friendly buisness model tho. Free game that on it's own is awesome and motivates for hundreds of hours and then it makes you want the full game to sink in hundreds of hours more. It's also nice that the microtransactions within TM are not based on real money but an internal economy with virtual money. Honestly even as the biggest TM fan i would abandon the game if i had to pay real money on it regularely for the smallest shit. Such a buisness model just feels like a rip off to me.

Played it for a while now but the game doesn't click for me. It's like Puzzle Quest but without the fun part of the puzzles. Instead just endless chaotic mouse clicking. Really want to like it because i got it as a gift from a much appreciated forum member.
Would you say that if i don't enjoy the gameplay after several hours that it could get fun to me at some point? Don't know if its just the early stages of the game or if it fundamentally isn't my thing.

It's never too late to pursue your dream. And if that's really what you want to do for a job then go for it. Even with 33 you still have around 30 years of work life ahead of you. Better to spent that with a job that you love then with something else that doesnt give you the same satisfaction.
But consider that you're not gonna get rich and that you have to be flexible with relocations. If you're the family type who plans to settle down with a family, build a house or whatever it's probably not the best job choice.
