You're eligible to retirement money from wherever you paid into the system. Just gotta make sure you archive all your paperwork so you don't have trouble to prove your claims 30-40 years down the line. I still get a letter from the Swedish retirement fund every year for example. I guess it will be a bit of a pain in the ass to sort out everything if you worked in a lot of different countries.

I also pay into a private fund btw. because i started relatively late to work regularely and have some catching up to do if i don't want to die in poverty.

  • Bump/Normal/etc. maps vs performance on source engine (CSGO)

Has more to do with their philosophy that the games must run on the worst possible hardware and source's inability to make normals pop properly in many lighting scenarios aynway. Ther's a lot of stuff in cs:go or the portal games that could look better even in that engine but it's a very deliberate choice by Valve to keep it more lowfi. They know people will buy their games for the gameplay and they couldn't compete with the visuals of highenend Cryengine or Unreal games even if they tried.

That could actualy have a backlash. I see that happening now in the reviews for Insurgency. We tried to push the engine a little more but now it doesn't get compared visualy to other indie titles like Rust or DayZ who have similarely small art teams or even CS:GO but to AAA titles and of course can't win on that front. It's a bit of an uncomfy spot inbetween two chairs.

Btw you guys need to work on the natural rocky level. There is zero readability between what is a cliff and what is a path you can take.

Yea good point. I will forward it. Wasn't happy with it myself when i did the texture pass on it. Didn't have the time to redo the displacements in a way that makes it easier to texture the paths more distinctively. Right now it's all just big displacemnt squares so ther's a lot of overlap texture wise between what's path and the rest of the terrain.

Are there any tutorials/guides for Insurgency's level design?

People are making custom maps already. Think you only need the source sdk and the insurgency fgd. But i'll ask one of our level designers to answer you guys. You might also find some info here: http://www.playinsurgency.com/forums/forum/15-level-creation/

We use a lot more normal maps in Insurgency then Valve usualy does for its games. It's not a big performance issue in my experience, tho might be for you in comparison with all the other cs:go maps. People on potatoes might have to scale down their texture quality settings only for your map.

What kills performance in source more then anything is overdraw from alphamapped textures aka tons of foliage, overlapping decals etc. It can bring even a highend rig to its knees while it doesn't look even remotly as good as Cryengine with tons more foliage. Anything else is not such a big problem. You can have lots of geometry in your maps. Valve doesn't even bother about lod's anymore for that reason.

Yea textures arn't lowres by source standards. I think what he's missing are detail normals but source doesn't have that. The general flatness of source materials doesn't help either.

That was Lethal Enterprise, a prototype we worked on before. Insurgency runs on the same version of Source Engine as CS:GO.

It's probably the best use of Source I've seen, sometimes doesn't even look like Source!

Thx. Nice to hear that opinion.

    edit:

Total Biscuit released his WTF is video for Insurgency today. He gives a good overview about the game for anyone who hasn't seen or played it yet.

It's a nice looking scene but ther's nothing in that screenshot that hints at a big technical leap. As some have said you could do that in the current iteration of source engine. The materials still look as flat as ever. I hope ther's more to it then just source 1 + more geo.

Thx man. I try to be bold with colors. Back in the days i painted lots of dark and depressive stuff. I also watched a video of some guy demonstrating that with brave coloring you can make even a lame picture interesting. That has influenced me.

Cool dude, you can definitely see a progression throughout those images! Keep up the hard work.

They are not in perfect chronological order. I didn't start completely from scratch tho. Obviously working in games, making 3D art, texturing props regularely etc. gives a bit of a headstart. I still have a long way to go learning to paint some more complex stuff tho like characters and concepts for hard surface. Also want to learn how to paint in this stereotypical cartoony video game style like wow etc.

So i'm gonna dump some of my 2D stuff in this thread. I don't have much experience with digital painting yet. Around 10 years ago i took some art classes once a week but that's my whole art background. I started getting into digital painting sometime october/november last year because i was really pissed at my art skills. Couldn't draw a straight line to use this overused phrase.

It was a problem for me that i never started to feel comfortable with the wacom. Maybe you know that problem as a 3D artist you spent days or a week or two in 3D application then only a day in photoshop. Digital painting i figured is a good way to keep the practice level high and would help me with texturing and also with sculpting in the eventualy. And so far has worked out pretty great. I'm still a noob pretty much but even after such short time i see progress when i compare with my very first tries.

Lot of them are works i did for the Daily Spitpaint Facebook group:

We have finaly released the game on the 22th (meaning it's not in Steam Early Access anymore). Feedback has been really great so far from what i've seen. People really seem to dig the gameplay, the weapon feel, the sound and fx.

First couple reviews i've seen are in the 75-80 range. Reviews on Steam Community are almost exclusively positive.

Also seems to be some word of mouth going on. Sales have been pretty good (p3 in top sellers yesterday, currently p4) despite not much PR and reviews in big publications yet. So it's looking pretty good.

I've been using FB a lot more again recently. Ther's a large number of art and job related groups with cool stuff to look at, daily tutorials, references, artists to follow etc. It's actualy quite a nice site when your newsfeed gets spammed with this sort of thing instead of pictures of ppl's kids and "funny" motivationals.

But if you internalize the frustration you do it wrong. It's not at all about forced restraint. It's about actualy not getting frustrated because you learn not to put as much weight behind everything that happens to you.

I just looked this up quickly because i don't want to cite anything wrong. In buddhism itself the idea is that your suffering is caused by craving and aversion. And the way to deal with it (the "road to happiness") is to adjust your own expectations of other people and what you want. Make them lagom so to speak

Yes I agree with what you're saying. I meditate myself, or try at least. It takes practice though and It's easier said than done to actually not let stuff get to you.

I'm a bit conflicted though. I think it's really important to speak your mind when you perceive something to be done the wrong way. Otherwise you risk ending up being the quiet "nice guy" putting up a facade of agreement and consent while being frustrated and pissed of inside. It's neither good for yourself or the people you are pissed of at since it's dishonest and you don't give them a chance to better themself. Do this for too long and you start resenting the people around you.

The other end of the extreme seema bit to close to not caring about the outcome. Who cares if the customers receive lousy support. It's ok for this game to turn out mediocare. It's fine if I don't get that promotion. And so one. If buddhists ran the world I'd imagine few of the great human achievements in entertainment, art, architecture and technology would have happened. These men were driven by a craving for fame, women, money and so on. Buddhist Colombus wouldn't have sailed to america imo. I say this understanding that this probably would have been a happier world with less suffering.

You raise some good points. But then i'm not a buddhist on his search for the perfect balance. I still have my fair range of emotions. It's just something that i always try to remember and apply when i can. It has helped me to a noticable degree not to feel miserable. During my teen years and early twens i always was so depressed. I have this much better under control ever since i started to worry less what other people think, stopped getting my knickers in a twist over pretty much everything and stopped being on the constant hunt for thrills and feel good moments.

I agree with you about speaking your mind. Very important to avoid lasting conflicts. What's also very important imo and what i only learned when i was around 25 is to say no. Now that's something that can create conflicts with other people but it's better then having an constant inner conflict because you do things that you really don't want to do or feel that others exploit you.

That's nice if you really can let things go. But if you only keep calm on the surface and internalize the frustration you just become passive aggressive.
