One thing to keep in mind through all of this, as everyone seems to have comment or a friend working on UE3 all of a sudden, is that finding developers that bitch about the engine they work on is like finding a needle in a stack of needles.

I think that's a very good point. Even when modding, I'm up on my soapbox bitterly complaining about a free SDK. God knows what I'd be like if I was paying for it

I don't really get it either, ReNo. It's not like it's rocket surgery to get it right. Maybe when it's wrong it's just the case that a programmer just kinda hacked it in and thought it looked fine without thinking too much about it, but actually ballsed-up the calculations?

Extremely cool. My now-archaic 6800GT is really struggling, though. Bless it.

P.s. did anyone else sit around at the end of the intro sequence wondering when the game was going to start, only to be prompted to shift your arse? (as it had started and it wasn't pre-rendered )

Teddy: That's some mightily impressive stuff. It's very cool that you work all day as an artist and go home to make technical stuff. Not many straddle the artist/technical dude divide like that.

Out of interest (and if I may ask), is this stuff entirely of your own making and, if so, how does that stand up in terms of ownership? I.e. do you retain all the intellectual & commercial rights now that you're working full time? I'd be very interested to hear how you go about inventing this stuff -- it's fascinating stuff. I've worked on a few programming projects but never invented something entirely new. Also, what kind of background do you have that helps you on the technical side (programming / maths etc.)

well the pics are inside a gallery. you can go to the next image by simply using the navigational arrows.or you can use a browser with tabs like firefox and click all links at once.

That's what I did and it still resized my browser every time a new tab opened.

Looks pretty cool, but I think it could use a bit more variety in the environment. Seems the only colours involved are that sort of bleached white stone and the (bright) green of the vegetation. The two-tone look is almost cartoonish -- if you subtly worked in some different colours it would maybe add a bit more depth to the environment.

    Looks nice though.

I've not been browsing for a month or so and just saw this. Top work! Just wanted to give you some props because, although a lot of people seem to (rightly) pick at a few rushed things and lack of detail in certain areas, you have a real knack for building cool environments. Once that final level of detail is added, it's going to look amazing. Keep it up

Looking good. I remember Carmack saying that he had "one more engine" in him after Doom3 shipped. Now that he's well into this iteration and already talking about the next version, it sounds like he's been bitten by the bug once more Sod the rockets, JC, keep knocking out game engines!

The textures you're using don't really fit together very well. You've got some really dirty textures above relatively clean ones, and then the floor is pristine despite the rest of the scene being quite dilapidated. I'd also think about replacing the upper wall texture as it doesn't go well with the ones below it. Also, the way you have the four floor tiles coming loose all as one piece looks weird. If there's a grate under there, surely it'd have some kind of marking(s) on top and perhaps a metal cover instead?

Come on, didn't everyone else love getting pm'ed by DaveL just so he could wank all over your face for 20 minutes while attempting to disguise it as a two-way conversation?

"Oh so how is it going?"

"It's going ok, got this d.."

"That's great. Listen, we just got this guy, this guy and this guy and they're all from companies x, y and z. This guy got some award and wanted to join us. Blah blah blah blah. Here, have a little career advice: learn to model blahblahblah. Insert more patronising waffle and ignore the fact that I've never cut a line of code, made a map, prop or texture."

The ND guys obviously had tolerance in spades. I would've murdered him inside a week. He was like the mod equivalent of a middle manager. The only good thing he managed to do is recruit a bunch of talented guys. Best of luck to ND now that you're free of him because you have some awesome talent aboard.

The trick of the piece of paper won't work in ins, because like operation flashpoint or redorchestra you aim with the elbow movements, so your line of fire won't be stuck in the center of the screen.

    Sounds like a good thing

I know it is nice you spend all that time but then beat up the assh*le who sold your mod to fileplanet. A well organized Torrent and a better timeplaning would have helped to give this mod the release it deserves.

Fileplanet will give it wider exposure and ensure that a lot of people will download it who may not have bothered if they didn't have the fileplanet link. Generally, the ultimate goal is to get a mod into the hands of as many people as possible (not just the people who would've played it anyway) and, to that end, it's a no-brainer.

Each of those screens is ~1 meg each -- it'd be a good idea to make thumbs and post them, or just post links. The terrain is OK but the rest of it looks pretty bland. Surely you have to agree that the promo shots were significantly more attractive than the actual gameplay shots? The promo shots had the wow factor and generated a lot of buzz and "omgs". Maybe they can improve it before the launch, but I'm still utterly unmoved by the visuals.
