Which studio would this be for? I'd be interested in applying, but as Ubisoft have studios all over the world, I'm not too sure if I'd be suited to some locations.

You were surprised that a city17 style map won? I figured there would be at least one in the top 3, and at least one would feature a train track

Powerhouse looks lovely in my opinion, though perhaps the author went a little OTT with the point_spotlights.

Hmm, I guess I could probably make room for a wooden beam texture somewhere, particularly on the first model's skin. As for the wooden upper floor part of the second building, I thought the same myself but it was actually used frequently in Ravenholm as a wall texture, and it is named "wood_wall", so I reckon I've got my bases covered Thanks for the advice though, I'll be sure to take it on board.

Just a couple of building models I've knocked up for my uni project. Keep in mind I'm not a modeller and my modelling prowess is still rather lacking, but thats not a huge issue considering we are being marked on the game and not the quality of models (though the better I can make them, the better!). Note that the skins are just made up of textures ripped from HL2 or public domain libraries - learning modelling is enough of a challenge for the time being, let alone 2D art!

    SMALL HOUSE

This one was my first attempt at modelling and skinning a building, so I took a look at Fabi's little RTS house model and kinda based it off that. I'll probably redo this one as the skin looks like shite and the peripheral models (crates and barrels) will probably be done as seperate props that I will then add with our level editor. The skin is 512x512, though you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise It has 290 polies as seen below, but without the barrels and crates its only 160...

    MEDIUM HOUSE

My second effort is a tad better. It again has a single 512x512 skin, and this one uses 340 polies.

I'll post others as I make them. My current workrate seems to be building the model one day, then unwrapping and skinning the next, but more because I'm too lazy to do all steps at once than because it takes me too long

One of my flatmates is quite terrified of sharp objects in general, so you aren't alone Can't say they bother me much to be honest, but then I've not had any bad incidents with them. As deadlode suggested, go for an electric if the razor blade puts you off - pretty hard to put a foot wrong with one of them.

Wow, consider me suitably impressed! I agree with most of the other comments (blue lights look poor, ceiling might look better darker, spotlights would be TEH WIN!).

    Errr, nothing very interesting really

    - Some crappy Headworx wallet (never liked the company, but it was a gift and my old one was getting scabby)

    - Uni ID card

    - Uni lab access swipe card

    - 02 top up card

    - 1 condom (was 2 until last week...when I lost one)

    - Bank card

    - Provisional Drivers License (ie. "I'm old enough to drink" card)

    - GAME reward card

    - Virgin "addict" card (some special offer thingy)

    - £5 Virgin voucher (what I've earnt from my addict card so far)

    - £5 note

    - £3.80 change

    - My housekey (I always used to forget this when I traveled home, so I now keep it in my wallet permanently)

Be excited! On other days, It can have an optional Young Person's Railcard, and, on a good day, it sees as much as £20 of money I haven't earned!

Sounds like something you would procedurally generate if you ask me. Just make several varities of grass model (eg. billboarded, alpha masked polys), and get the programmer to place them at random if the ground is using a certain texture. Placing them manually, as you suggested, sounds like a helluva lot of work. Won't get a better LOOKING result of course, but as my modelling skills are lacklustre I'm in no position to suggest how best to go about that.

If you like good single player, why are you a big Quake fan? I'm sure most would agree that Quake games, while perfectly enjoyable, aren't exactly sterling demonstrations of single player gameplay design. Stroggos was quite a nicely realised heavy industrial planet, with plenty of beefy and "hard" feeling locations that felt convincing at the time, but by the same hand Doom 3 did high tech very nicely (if very repetitively). The reason you don't see many more places looking like Stroggos, is probably something to do with Stroggos being overly simplistic (yes, due to the tech restrictions of the time period). I don't think you can say, from the limited screenshots that have been shown, that we are going to see purely rectangular doors, no lava, and no objectives. Doom 3 had an objective system every bit as complex as Quake 2's anyway, though both seemed to tag interesting sounding objectives to some generic action.

I hope the box art uses roman numerals (eg. IV) instead of the four single prongs, which looks so crowded is laughable

The seat texture is too blurry for it to really look fitting in a current gen game, but the other stuff would probably look pretty good. The square table with the gramophone is my favourite of the set, though the lamp is also nicely done.

Yup, looking sexy. I prefer the railway pillars in the concept shot and the texture repetition is a little...repetitive on the main building (not the upper combine style section), but otherwise its a very nice realisation.

Environment sucks. That character model is a work of genius however. If you made him in under 2000 polies I'm shooting myself RIGHT NOW

In all seriousness though, it looks really nice. Perfectly good rendition of the artwork.
