If there was quicksave in Halo or Republic Commando, I would have used it. And if I had, I think it would have made the games worse. Quicksave is fine and I've nothing against it in the vast majority of games its used in, but I don't think it should just be shoved into all games. Some games are designed to use checkpoints, others are designed to use quick/manual saves. I don't think you can normally just shove one system or the other into a game and have it work effectively - they are important features of the game and play a part in its design.

I really like checkpoint saves in some games. Quicksave makes things too easy and even in games that have it I tend to use it sparingly. Games like Halo and Republic Commando, which have forgiving health systems and checkpoint saves, work best in my opinion. If you look at the likes of Doom 3 or HL2 with the familiar old health systems and quicksave, you are too encouraged to retry an area or save after every "good" and "economic" kill in order to get through it using the minimum health and ammo, giving you a better chance in the next encounter. I prefer to want to continue on regardless of how well I did an area - far more immersive in my opinion.

As a few of you know, every year at the Snarkpit we have a mapping contest. This year is of course no different, and marks our first in the source engine. While we don't exactly have the prize funds or anything that try to entice mappers in other contests, we always have a good number of entrants and tend to see some pretty exceptional entries (look at Ferret's fairytale map, or CJ's "Persian Letters" entry for last year). I figure some of you guys might be interested in doing something a little different, so here's the scoop...

And for info on last years contest, showing off all the entries, check this link...

To be honest that is a fair point. In many games there are settings in which there just isn't much potential for interesting cover. Most of the time there is SOMETHING that could be more suitable, but we should also at times realise that games aren't the real world, and if we want to offer the player something to hide behind, we need to improvise and possibly deviate from realism a little. So yeah, crates might not feature in the everyday world as much as they do in game worlds, but there is a reason for that.

Holy crap, somebody came into money!
Nice setup you have there, and one hell of a spacious case. -
LOL, thats exactly what we thought a few people might say
If you are only willing to have your work put beside that of experienced mappers, and if you need to be associated with only experienced mappers in order to keep up some sort of "reputation", perhaps this project isn't for you. -
I think part of its charm is that its open to everybody - bringing newcomers and experienced people together in one project encourages those who have been at it longer to help and teach those who haven't. I'm working on an area, as are CJ, RabidMonkey, Agent Smith, and Trapt, and none of us are exactly new to level design. Its an opportunity to go wild and work on a small area, yet still have it contribute to a level that will eventually be released.
Think about it, if you guys contribute nice areas, then there are more nice mosaics that will come out of it
I don't see how this project is anything but beneficial to the community to be honest, and I applaud DrGlass for handling it so professionally. You shouldn't really look at the member page as a team - this isn't a mod project or anything after all. You contribute an area that goes into the mosaic. -
Likewise. He also seemed to contradict himself a bit in places - for example he says he doesnt care about having lots of background detail as it means games require more time to develop and therefore reduces the chances of small, interesting games appearing. He then says people should build entire buildings instead of rooms to add to the immersion.
He does raise a lot of mostly good points, but it is kinda interspersed with issues I personally don't have a problem with (and WOULD have an issue with if changed). For example, Auto Modellista sucked because by offering you basically all the cars/upgrades at the start for free, it offered no reason to play for long. Don't do the same to PGR or GT or something - I WANT to work my way through the different car styles to reach the top!

I watched the first and second series religously, but then the damn BBC decided not to bother getting the third series rights so it never made it to UK TV. We got it on DVD however, and watched a few episodes every night for a week or so. God knows when the fourth series will make an appearance, doubt the BBC will get it having not shown the third. I can only hope for a reasonably swift DVD set

I'm with D3 - hottest of the bunch and then some. Yum yum

Hey Bio, not bored of the snarkpit already I hope?!

-
I haven't done any of it myself, but I'm sure its still heavily brush based in order to flesh out the shape of the level. Like Unreal, it uses a lot of meshes for detail purposes, but you still build the basic level out of brushes in Radiant or whatever.

Max Payne is really the obvious comparison to draw.

The Killzone 2 video, they have now admitted, is an approximation of how they envision it to look. I'm sure its the same with MotorStorm, but I bloody hope not as that game looked like all my christmas's rolled into one!

Quote from mike-0
emo fucking sucks
I'm really curious why emo has such an awful reputation, and what bands people building this reputation from. What emo bands have you heard that suck? Its quite possible it really does, and I just happen to listen to some of the peripheral stuff that is actually good

LOL, that trailer was amazing
One of the best I've ever seen, despite using old tech and not showing anything about the game. -
I've played and completed MGS, played MGS2 briefly, and watched the vast majority of MGS3 being completed. I've played and completed GTA, and played GTA3 just not for any real amount of time. I'm not saying they are bad games - far from it - just not some of my favourites.

Thats why I said "most are sequels to games I never seem to buy"
Though to be honest I haven't played a GTA since the original. GT4 is a great game that I play often and the PS3 one does look great, its certainly a game I'd buy. Finally more than 6 cars in a race
To be honest though, PGR2 was, for me, a better game, so PGR3 is more of a pull.As for the look of the controllers - I'll take proven useability over originality thanks. The PS3 controllers look like a joke, the 360 controllers look like an improvement over what was already the best of bunch for me.
