Jesus, I just checked and it's LESS than a year. Considering my post count, that's quite a surprise! I must be spamming :S

It's as if they just completely gave up on taking the gaming side of the franchise seriously, isn't it?

Why are people thinking this makes hammer work without steam? Am I missing something here? I didn't see anything about it that relates to hammer whatsoever.

Oooh good to see you here man, and I'm digging this map. I'd prefer it if it wasn't City 17 personally, but as it's for a mod I guess you don't get that option. Reminds me of the atmosphere in the Innsmouth levels of Call of Cthulhu, and that's a compliment

What you doing with Drift by the way? AG2 seems somewhat abandoned, so you considering releasing for HL2DM or perhaps HL2DM Pro?

Whether you use outlook or thunderbird you will still need a new email address. Gmail is good - offers lots of space, has a decent web interface, and I've yet to have any problems. You can also use it with thunberbird or outlook if you like I think, though I find the web interface perfectly powerful. If you need an invite, plenty of people around here will have them, myself included.

They were WAY too harsh on Call of Cthulhu, and I'm amazed that they preferred generic action horror The Suffering to what I found one of the more refreshing games of the year. Each to their own I guess and Call of Cthulhu has been getting some extremely mixed reviews - 8/10+ way down to 4/10, and god knows what VideoGaiden would have given it!

Updated the model a little, unwrapped it, and started skinning. Note that skinning is my utter weak point, so don't expect wonders even when I've spent more time on it Also keep in mind that this is for a top down racing game where the camera wont ever be as close to the car as this screenshot is. Enough excuses, the picture...

EDIT: Another skin, for better or worse. I need to learn how to render things nicely - any time do it it looks worse than the viewport displays

Updated the car, and now finished with the modelling I think. I'm tempted to improve the sides by modelling in the windows, but given that this is for a top down racing game, I can't help but feel I've already used too many polys. Currently stands at 480 polys / 1010 tris. Max rocks the socks off Milkshape - I have seen the light

    EDIT: Oh yeah, the images

I think I need Quicktime 7 or something, as it's not playing. Shame I can't seem to find a Quicktime 7 installer that doesn't force bloody iTunes upon you - fuck that.

Sexy indeed, but like mino I'm worrying about the file size also. Displacement surfaces bump up file size a lot - there was a space platform map that was made out of loads of displacements, and it was 35mb or something crazy like that without even using screeds of custom stuff like you are doing. I think using displacements for detail like those stairs is overkill, but by god it makes it look good

I'm gonna make a simple top down racing game (think Mashed/Micro Machines) for my uni networking project, so it follows that I'd need a car or two. And so at long last, I cracked open 3dsmax and made a decent effort to learn how to use the thing. I followed a tutorial on box modelling a car to get used to the tools then broke away from it as I didn't want it so hi-poly, nor looking TOO much like a Nissan 300zx

Any comments and suggestions welcome. Polycount is currently 292 (602 tris), and the only significant additional modelling work I'm planning is to put in the back wheel arches and add some depth to the rear bumper.

    [Blocked Image: http://www.snarkpit.net/pits/reno/random/reno_car.jpg]

Oh, and a question. There is a horrible seam down the middle of the car where the cloned side meets the original side. I figure I have to weld the vertices together, but my attempts to do so don't seem to make any difference to anything. Is there some trick involved or something?

For me, there just aren't enough interesting games on the PC. If you like FPS/MMO/RTS/Simulations, then you are spoilt for choice. If you like other genres you're kinda screwed on the PC.

Truth is though, I wouldn't WANT to play other genres on the PC really. It doesn't suit racing games like Burnout, or crazy side scrollers like Viewtiful Joe, or funky sports games such as Jet Set Radio, or fast paced beat-em-ups like Soul Calibur, or party games like Warioware, or... And truth be told, a lot of these other genres are essential to many people - I for one would hate to be limited to the PC suitable genres.

Something I've never really understood are people who say consoles suck because you can't mod the games. What about PLAYING the games? Since when did that become such a chore? Don't get me wrong, it's great when games come along that you can mod, but NOT being able to mod something is hardly detracting from the game itself. Chances are people who mod PC games only do it for one or two games a year. Are people restricting themselves to buying only moddable games on principle? If so, thats freaking stupid, and if NOT, then saying consoles suck due to inability to mod is somewhat hypocritical. Unless you aren't a gamer of course, but if thats the case I seriously question your desire to make games.

Anyway, this hasn't exactly been relevant to the discussion, so I'll shut up now

I've found that sometimes using full AA is less effective than lesser settings. 4xAA seems to be the best visually for me. I tested it out on my "dm_hex" map, which was a great one to use due to the fact it uses flat colour textures only. With 4xAA everything was nice and smooth, but with 6xAA the lines seemed more jagged and stepped. I guess it's my card not liking 6xAA or something, but it's a 6800 so I wouldn't have thought it would be unsupported.

Norway is both further north than me and a coastal country, which means I pity them for their temperatures. It also touches Finland, and the two Finnish girls I know are hot, which scores you plus points. A mate of mine is in a WoW guild with shitloads of Norwegians who are apparently ultra-cool and always phoning him up, so I guess thats another good sign...or not.

To be honest though, it always strikes me as being the bit of Scandanavia that the other two countries didn't want Looks like Finland and Sweden are "getting it on", and Norway is like the unwanted third member in a menage e trois

So, Scotland huh? I wonder what stereotypes people can think of
