  • PS3 Price and Controller Details

So for those who haven't noticed yet, at the pre-E3 Sony conference, the PS3's price point was announced. As many expected it is $499, though this is for the base model that comes with a 20Gb HDD. For those who want to go with a 60Gb HDD, it will set them back $599. Fairly hefty prices, but not really surprising. I don't think anybody figured it would be lower than $500, but a fair few thought higher, so its a relief if anything.

The big surprise though was the updated controller. It looks exactly like the PS2 controller, but now with added gyroscope! That's right, both the PS3 and Wii have motion sensing control pads...intriguing stuff

Looking neat. I'm glad to see it is semi-third person too, I'm so bored of just being a camera and a set of arms in the world

I think sandbox generally just refers to any game that avoids the standard linear progression model. If you aren't lead through the game by the hand but are instead left (for the most part) to your own devices, free to explore and progress as your own pace and via your own route, then it is valid to use the term sandbox. GTA is probably one of the clearest examples of sandbox gameplay I can think of.

I think the Oblivion rating being bumped up actually had more to do with the gore - the content that the ESRB saw initially was fairly tame compared to some of the stuff in the final game, so the rating was revised.

If a game really does need to get bumped up from teen to mature due to a topless skin, however, there is something seriously wrong with people.

I've heard good things about SketchUp for a while now, but only recently found out that it has anything to do with Google. I watched the video tutorials and it certainly seems like a neat program. I've downloaded it but trying it out will have to wait.

Why is it "ok" to see it back in the day of Doom and TFC? This is just another case of "those are the classics - don't doubt them" and "it's new, shit on it!".

Personally I really liked FEAR, but never got around to finishing the last bit of it. Should really do that before this addon pack. Thanks for the news D3

Spore doesn't appeal to me really - just not my sorta game. This video did nothing to change that.

csharp - this game isn't being hyped for its graphics

Oh I did mean actual programming mate When I said I was working with the AI system, I meant that all I've really been working on is coding new NPC behaviour. My honours project was building an AI system for background characters - basically it is a replacement for the current "act busy". Didn't turn out that well, and there is a lot of stuff I planned to get in but didn't, but hey, its better than nothing I'm familiar with the HL2 source code so can probably put my hand to most things, but I don't have time to be going crazy with anything too big.

Let me know specifics (here or in a PM if you don't wanna give things away) and I'll let you know if I can help. I won't be able to for at least a week regardless though - exams and honours project deadline this week

    Quote from Phatsniper

    Reno, that wallpaper ROCKS!

It really does eh It's called "Noise, Sound and Music", and originally it was blue rather than orange. I'm a sucker for orange though so a quick photoshop modification was in order. Looked great in blue too, but I prefer the orange one. Think I grabbed it from DeviantArt ages ago.

I rarely update it - love that wallpaper. I run 2 monitors but the other one is generally just Winamp/IRC dedicated, so no point showing it. It uses the same wallpaper and runs at 1280x960.

Hmm, depending on the work I might be able to help you. I'm finishing uni in a couple of weeks, and have a week of nothing after that before I start my new job. I'm planning on doing a bit more HL2 coding to extend my familiarity a bit (beyond the AI system...which is all I've really worked with), so depending on what you need done I might be interested.

  • open positions?

    • ReNo
    • May 7, 2006 at 12:03 AM

I'm with Izuno on this - the only people that are likely to care about positions coming up are those looking for work, and those people are probably going to be looking at places like gamasutra, gamejobs, recuitment agency sites, etc... anyway. I think it's a bit different when the company that somebody here works at is looking (I've seen it here in the past with Crytek for example) and they post that, but simply taking it from other commonly looked at sites to post here seems pointless.

  • PhysX card to be released soon. What's your take?

    • ReNo
    • May 6, 2006 at 3:09 AM

Why bother? When graphics jumped over to GPUs, AI started getting a far more significant portion of the CPU to use. If physics is shifted off too (and it seems it almost certainly will be - either through these dedicated PPU cards, or by using graphics cards) then AI will get an even larger claim. The CPU will essentially just be for game logic and AI

  • ESRB, Oblivion...let the debate rage!

    • ReNo
    • May 5, 2006 at 8:33 PM

I think the point was that the content shipped with the game, it was just "locked" and required something to unlock it. They can't do anything about mods changing things - you can't accomodate for that on the age ratings on the box - but if something comes with the game (ie. sex minigame in GTA, topless skins in Oblivion) then they can. Even if it does require a mod to unlock it seems.

If you get bored and feel like doing a version of Reno in your lovely style then it would be cool. I realise there's quite a queue going on here though!
