Have you any preference on what engine you would like to use? A game you play more often than others for instance? Most people in this community work with the Source engine primarily, but all the other major ones have people here with plenty of experience, be it Doom 3, or Unreal, or whatever. If I were just starting out at the moment I'd go with Unreal I think, primarily because UE3 is looking to be about the most widely used engine around. Getting experience with UE2 would probably stand you in good stead for when UE3 hits. Let us know what you'd prefer if you have any preference and I'm sure you'll get some good advice on where to get started ![]()

Curved subway ceiling could use a few more faces, or maybe just the use of smoothing groups to make the lighting look a little nicer up there. Otherwise it looks pretty cool, but it would be nice if the mod featured less HL2 assets.

It's not from either as far as I'm aware John, it's just capone's concept. He posted up lots of designs for it a while back.
My only thought about the 3D work so far is that the eyes need more of a bulge above them. Dunno if thats something you just plan on adding in with z-brush though, so maybe that's not of much importance. I adore the way you've drawn the 2D concept, looks adorable in a grotesque kinda way

Very nice work, I liked it. You packed a lot in there given the limitations. You program the game too or is that an existing framework app you used?

skdr endorses false advertising!

Most people have fast enough connections, but not everyone, so it's a courtesy to those who don't to post reasonably sized shots. Its also worth noting that posting 800kb screenshots is gonna go through your host's bandwidth a lot faster than 100-200kb screenshots, which is a perfectly ample file size to aim for unless you are wanting to post particularly hi-res shots. Not a concern if you are using imageshack or something but it might be if you or somebody else with limited bandwidth are hosting your images.
It's true though - thats not the sharpest or cleanest looking screenshot

HDR skybox is a bit bright, as has been said, but I don't think it looks like the effect is overused in the actual level. Fogged out building in the first shot looks odd though. Oh, and so do the multi-coloured trees in the second last shot
Everything else looks fine and dandy...in fact more than fine and dandy, whatever that may be
Good job! -
Glad to see you are still working on this mate, turning into quite an epic project. Good call on remaking the hover cars - new one looks much better.

Quote from Polaris
I think you guys got a little side tracked. Rail-shooters don't allow you to control where you go (think Virtua Cop or that old Area 51 arcade game), thats not the same thing as riding in a vehicle in a mp game.
He didn't just ask for rail shooters - he did say that vehicle sections where you don't control the vehicle or are forced down a path should also be mentioned, as well as fairly static position defense style games (e.g. sniping from a rooftop you can move around on).
-
Our concept artist is playing it at the moment, which is unfortunate given that I haven't finished it and my desk is oriented in a way that means I just about can't NOT look at his screen

"Conflict: Desert Storm 2" had a few defensive missions where you had to hold a building against swarms of incoming enemies. Lots of sniping in that game, but then I did play as the sniper class (4 player coop) so I guess I would say that
Also features vehicles which are normally driven along confined paths, and only one person is in control while the others use guns from them. I'm sure the same sort of gameplay would crop up in the other Conflict games too, but I only played Conflict Vietnam briefly and haven't played the others.Resident Evil 4 had some sections where your movement was restricted and you had to fight off enemies - most notably the house where you, Ashley and Louis (was that his name?) get severly overrun. Also in an area with a lift, where you have to shoot enemies jumping on or sniping from the sides without much opportunity to move around. Also had a brief rail shooting section of sorts when you are riding in the back of a truck.
The original Sin's intro section had you gunning from a mounted gun on a helicopter - a fairly common scenario in games (such as GRAW and Path of Neo) - and though I haven't seen it happen yet I believe Sin Episodes has some shooting from a car.

Hey man, you a member of the Empires dev team, or have they released the FGD and assets for custom maps? Looks like an interesting mod to have a play around with

Punish them severely so they know that there are serious repurcussions that simply aren't worth risking for what is a completely utterly exercise? Not enough punishment these days, and thats why our societies are becoming so god damned pathetic. Kids get away with this crap, and even if they are caught then the police are rarely allowed to do anything other than give them a warning.
I remember being in a big crew of folk in the park one night several years ago and some people kept knocking over the bins. Afterward I'd pick them back up, and they seemed to think I was doing something out of line for some reason. Madness really, dunno what people get out of doing things like that. But hey, I guess I did used to do garden runs and stuff which is effectively the same thing - something you do for the excitement of knowing your shouldn't.

The face looks a bit too masculine to me Posty, though I'm sure if viewed from a distance that wouldn't be so noticeable. Otherwise very cool, gotta love the smeared blood

Why is it another thing entirely? I honestly don't see why getting updates to your DS through the Wii is of much importance, and certainly not of much surprise. I'm pretty sure Sony are also doing something along the same lines with the PSP/PS3, given that they frequently tout the connectivity between them. You can already get updates through the Wifi connection on the DS anyway can't you? I know you can with the PSP, so it's hardly something staggeringly new, though hopefully Nintendo will actually put out content rather than putting in the feature and neglecting it entirely (*cough* PSP infrastructure mode *cough*). As I said, it's neat that it is done automatically and all, but I don't see how it's a particularly huge feature. Maybe I'm missing something though, I haven't read the article just yet after all, I'm just going off this thread.
-
Bit of a nothing feature if you ask me. If I care about a game that allows downloadable content, then I'll check for it. Hell, with things like steam update news or games auto-updating on Xbox Live, plenty is already being done in this department. Sure it's quite nice that it does it all when your console is off, but not what I'd call a key feature in the upcoming console war.

Wow, some really great entries so far folks, keep it up! I'd love to see that one animated Step, would look fucking hilarious waddling along at you with its little arms bobbing back and forth

-
Definately spotlight - awesome job.
-
That's seriously fucked up. Nice of them to promote free train travel though

Innovation isn't a sure fire path to market glory though - plenty of more innovative games bomb while plenty of "me too!" titles earn their developer's a packet. It's easy to see why developers are so often tempted to tackle the established genres that they have a guaranteed market for (provided their product isn't shit).
It's going to be really interesting to see what happens with the Wii, which is really the cmost obvious and drastic example of gaming innovation in a long long time. Will it really draw in hoardes of newcomers as so many expect, or will it just be something new for those already interested in gaming to play with?
