Jesus, that's quite the disaster area isn't it? Trains, cars and ships sharing the same space...terribly unlucky really! I think you need to get some damage to the terrain under the train, as it looks like it was placed delicately on the ground just now. In fact I think the terrain in general could be improved a lot, as it currently looks very flat, featureless, and devoid of contrast. Lighting in the scene is rather weak too - you could use more defined shadows IMO.

I quite like that the corrugated material brings some colour to the scene, but I second the comment about those wedge things. They just don't make any sense, and don't really work visually either. Some vertical element to the wall with just the windows could be nice too, even if just some simple pillars, as at the moment its very flat indeed.

Pretty much everything is based on imported models I believe MJ, including interiors. Though earlier Frie did mention that there are the equivelant of brushes that can be used in levels, they just aren't used at all within Crysis beyond blocking things out for testing.

...and I'm with dux. I've got a game idea I'm planning on developing as a Source mod for the time being, but it would be oh-so-much better suited CryEngine2. I'm not gonna sit and wait though, I need to get back into doing some solo work ASAP.

  • New monitor resolution woes

    • ReNo
    • March 8, 2007 at 9:45 PM

Well my new Samsung 226BW arrived today - a 22" widescreen LCD with a native resolution of 1680x1050. Sadly, I plug it in via DVI, and it seems to think it isn't a widescreen at all, and instead has a maximum resolution of 1280x1024. Now I know this isn't normally a big issue, as you can just tell windows to show unsupported modes and when you select one it should work. Sadly, when I do this, it does apply the resolution but that resolution doesn't fit the screen. Instead, 1280x1024 pixels of that 1680x1050 fill up the screen, and I have to pan around by moving the mouse to see the other pixels!

I've tried installing the monitor drivers, reinstalling graphics drivers, reinstalling monitor drivers, uninstalling graphics drivers and just using windows - all to no avail. What DOES work is using VGA instead of DVI, where I can select 1680x1050 and it displays it filling the screen as it ought to.

So, any ideas? I'd rather use DVI as most people say that gives a noteworthy increase in image quality, but its not much use if I can't even select the native resolution! I'm running an ATI X1900XT, in case that helps anybody. I've not come across anybody else having this problem with this monitor, so I don't think its necessarily an issue with it, but instead something up with my system.

Insta, the song is "Get It Together" by The Go! Team, and if you like that song you'd do well to get their album as most of the songs would fit in the game really well

  • In the futur we will have to pay to play multiplayer

    • ReNo
    • March 8, 2007 at 12:05 PM

For a lot of people this seems to be a disaster of epic proportions, but like KFS, it doesn't really bother me at all as I'm already paying. In fact, it almost seems like a good thing to me, as it means my annual fee is going to start covering services on not only the 360, but also the PC. £40 a year might sound a lot but I don't miss it - its well worth paying for Xbox Live in my opinion. Whether the service adds anything of worth to the PC is yet to be seen, but I imagine that it will if enough games use it.

Also, from my understanding of Microsoft's stance on Live! for PC, you can play multiplayer for free, you just don't get premium features such as achievements. At least that is what is happening with Halo 2, though it wouldn't be too surprising if that changed in the future.

I was really impressed by it; gives off a really nice atmosphere, especially thanks to the choice of music.

I used to run dual screen - one 19" CRT and one 17" CRT - but these days I couldn't put up with the tiny amount of desk space that left me with. It was a handy thing to have, especially for coding I found, but I've gotten used to being without it again.

I've just got a 22" widescreen waiting to be delivered - don't say that Furyo

I must admit to being kinda worried on that front though. I was thinking about going for two 19", 4:3 LCDs instead of the one 22" widescreen, but in the end I decided I wanted the convenience of a single, significantly larger, screen.

Picked up God Hand for the PS2 yesterday - its the Clover studios game that just came out that isn't Okami, but also got mostly great (8 or 9 out of 10 from most places) reviews. I only threw it in for about 10 minutes last night to have a little look, but I wasn't exactly impressed. Horrible camera, uninspiring graphics, and the wierdest intro dialogue I've ever heard. Its meant to be a tough motherfucker of a game, with some pretty deep combat, and that SOUNDS like my kind of thing (Ninja Gaiden, for instance, is very much my kind of thing). For now though, I'm not so sure. Gotta give it a lot more time before I condemn it though

  • Sony removing hardware emulation from PS3?

    • ReNo
    • February 26, 2007 at 12:56 PM

I see a problem if their use of the term "limited range" with regards to the PS2 game compatibility means it doesn't play the majority of games. If it had been this way from the start I wouldn't really have minded, but people's expectations from the PS3 are that it will play all their PS2 games (either through assumption - most of my mates figure that is the case because "it's playstation" - or through Sony actively touting it as a feature), and now just a month prior to release they change that.

If they pump out updates frequently to improve game support then that will go some way to righting the wrong, but most of my mates don't link up their systems to the internet, which makes things harder for them. Hopefully like MS they will offer downloadable updates from their website to burn to CD, or offer mailed out CDs, for people in that position. Also, Sony's press release spiel about "Focusing on new content, not backwards compatibility" doesn't exactly inspire confidence in their intentions to put out frequent updates. Microsoft have been shit in this department - bi-yearly updates with 1 or 2 noteable games each time isn't really worth getting too excited about - and I'm not sure whether to expect Sony to be any better.

Well if its down to cost cutting, then why hasn't the price changed?

Because by cutting costs yet retaining the same price at retail they aren't making the same level of losses on each console as they used to be.

Their press release put it down to cost cutting, and of course tried to put some ridiculous positive spin on it about "focusing on creating exciting new PS3 content rather than backwards compatibility". TomsHardware and a few other sites reported that they were also removing the motion sensing feature from the controllers, but I've not found any legitimate source on that and it sounds completely unbelievable, so most people are putting it down to those sites wrongly interpreting "emotion engine" as "motion engine".

Well...that kinda sucks. I'm not exactly devastated - I do have a PS2 I can use after all - but there are still quite a few PS2 games I mean to play and I would rather have done it on the PS3 and hid my PS2 away in the cupboard somewhere. On the plus side, maybe by using software emulation we can expect similar benefits to the 360's backwards compatibility with upscaling, AA, etc... Not such great news if, like the 360, it doesn't work on the games you really want it to though (let me play Otogi, JSRF, Panzer Dragoon Orta and all the other awesome exclusives MS!)

The whole PS3 thing is becoming such a farce now. I keep thinking "surely this is the last fuck up Sony can make for a while" and then end up being proven totally wrong. I'll still end up buying one eventually, but come on Sony, try releasing some GOOD news once in a while would you?

Just got FFXII yesterday and played it for a few hours last night. Seems great so far, very refreshingly different to previous games in the series. Not sure what I think about the new combat system yet - given I've only just got a second party member and only had a few fights its not exactly at the point I can pass judgement - but given time I'll no doubt get used to it. Characters seem interesting and the world, or what little I've seen of it, feels far more mature and convincing than most games in the series.

I adore the fact that every sound effect sounds like it's ripped straight outta Vagrant Story, though I must admit it kind of makes me long for a range sphere to appear around my character every time I bring up the action menu

Well that suggests that some child submits their own drawings, and then a load of professional artists do their own renditions of it. Instead its actually a site where professional artists draw their own versions of popular comic book characters, which is a bit different. I was expecting the same thing as Mino. Cool site nonetheless

The times I've played on the Wii have been great fun and I'm fully intent on picking one up for good times with mates, but I see pretty much zero potential for it to become my "favourite" of the new systems. Zacker's point is one that I find very hard to overlook, and Furyo, that list (nor the "Eye on 2007: Wii" article at Eurogamer) does nothing puts those fears to rest. There are simply so few games I have any interest in whatsoever on the Wii. The control system might be genius, but it is lacking games with depth terribly.

Will be interesting to see how badly that hits it though - the DS is selling brilliantly on the back of mostly novelty titles, after all. On the other hand, it also has plenty of deeper titles for those that want them.
