  • The Ball - Indie FPS Action/Puzzle Game

    • Hourences
    • June 26, 2008 at 11:14 AM

Edit: All old links and media removed - see the later posts for a good view on the project's current status!

A Portal style game mixed with some Indiana Jones flavor! No portals however, but loads of physics fun instead!

3 +1 as the linked thread states. (Coder, Scripter and Hourences as LD + 1 add. Volunteer)looks solid but atm there's too less contrast. I had a hard time spotting the ball at first. It might be worth a try to either set the env darker and the ball brighter or test a waaay brighter env. Oh and for a puzzle game it might be better to have less "hotspots" in your textures - these should be reserved for key-points (or have the light a lot more contrasty)

Most puzzle games are really bright and cartoony, if I make colors stand out more, or raise brightness of ball/env I go into the same direction and I really dont want to.

Stuff that is important, so all the buttons, give off light and flash a bit. Also the ball has rim lighting that lights it up, and it has two lamps that give off light, its hard to miss it if you are closer by. It is also bigger than the player.

I will try to see how yellow works on the ball though, instead of red. Might make it more obvious.

    Started a mod for UT3.

The Ball : Pehua (Pehua : the beginning) is a singleplay FPS puzzle game involving the player and a big metal ball. The player must push the ball around, currently using a modified impact hammer, to get around puzzles and obstacles.

The game takes place in an Aztec temple, inside a gigantic cavern in the top of an volcano.

It is basically Portal meets Tomb Raider in terms of feeling, atmosphere, action/puzzle ratio and all that.

The idea was to make a puzzle game with a darker edge to it. Most puzzle and ball games are usually quite cartoony and kiddy, we are trying to go for a slightly darker yet still rather colorful (Unreal!) style.

It is fairly low poly, a la Portal style, and it uses all new custom assets

Maybe they thought that it wasnt such a big deal to use screenshots? Possibly because of their age, we grew up with this stuff and the moral values of this new media and the online communities, they might not have a clear idea of the dos and donts online because of their age.

Nonetheless, they still shouldnt have done this.

I also pitty them, but its their own fault. And they know whats going on, I saw one of them login to a forum they use today.

Also find it sad that there are so many struggling developers out there who all try to get hold of a publishing deal and get their hard work to pay off, and never succeed. And then these guys rip off everything, make the worst game ever, and get their "creation" onto the shelves with seemingly little trouble...

  • Unreal 3 "Old School Contest"

Name doesnt really fit, far from oldschool.

This contest is aiming for beginners, they are trying to draw in new people into UT3 modding. The real serious contest, MSU, which is running for the next year and a half, has higher standards, and a lot more artistic freedom, like custom art assets permitted.

Im taking part in the MSU, with four levels and a mod for the first round.

They got stuff from Oblivion, Painkiller, Thief, UT2004, RTCW, and so on. I wonder how they managed to combine all of those different games:P

They even ripped entire custom levels people made for UT2003/4!

His portfolio is horrible, and everything else said is prolly true, but he does has a point that the industry doesnt always make it easy for starters. If you have a title on your name, youre hired so much easier, even if that title is utterly horrible... its not always fair.

I also believe that hes a victim of one those game dev schools, and thats also part of the problem. The whole thing is muched too hyped up and a lot of those schools are really really bad. Dont blame it all on the guy.

I think the new screens look really bad, the game looks very dull. There is absolutely no lighting, contrast, composition, or anything going on. Just some models in an unlit world...

On a positive note, forest fights are cool.

Its still only the 4th game in like 20 years or whatever, it could be worse you know..

I think it is quite normal that they stick to their IPs, since they got quite a few of them, and all of them are very well known. It would be stupid not do anything with them.

Besides, in the end it is about what you do with it, rather than what it is. Even a Mylittle pony game could be most awesome. They could make D4 take place in a dense but dark scary jungle environment, with ancient ruines somewhere, and a lot of vehicle sections. My point is, It doesnt have to have be like D3.

I think it's a bit of a stretch that a guy could release a map at the very end of February and then it magically shows up in a UT3 360 trailer barely a month later. Maybe there were wip shots, but even then big boat in the arctic was HL2's thing long before anyone put it in UT3.

I can build that level in a week...

  • Epic "steals" user created map!?

    • Hourences
    • April 22, 2008 at 8:06 AM

The level is much more similar to the user level, than to the original Epic level, so in that way yes, it is perhaps a bit strange that their level looks so alike. I think it is safe to say that a LD at Epic was browsing through the forums, and took over the idea.

Nothing illegal to take over an idea though, just not a very nice thing to do. They could have at least changed the theme....

If they want to give the game a fresh feeling again by adding new weapons, they should give everyone access to them. Unbalancing a MP game is a no go imo.

If they want the weapons to be mainly used by experienced players, make them difficult to use so beginners wont bother, but still have the opportunity to try them out.
